5/13 at Lake Braddock VA

Allen Johnson Invitational

The meet at Lake Braddock is named after THE Allen Johnson, a graduate.  The Olympic champion hurdler graduated from Lake Braddock and headed a fund raising campaign for a new track recently.  He was a do everything athlete at Lake Braddock, including 7 feet in the high jump and 49 feet triple jump.

Here is Conrad Haber's account of the meet:

The conditions were hazy, hot, and humid - yet the Allen Johnson Track was  crammed with runners prepared to push themselves to the limits.

The biggest star of the meet had to be Ricky Harris of Centerville who was  the lone double winner of the day. Ricky started off the meet with a time  of 13.71 in the high hurdles demolishing the entire field. Not  a bad start for Ricky, considering that his time in the high hurdles  set a meet record by 0.67  (Brandon Reyster 14.38).

The other victory for Ricky came in the 300  hurdles where he cruised to a 38.08 victory.

Some of the other big performances at the Allen Johnson Invitational  resulted in meet records. Jeremey Harris of West Potomac  ran away from the field to finish roughly 2 seconds ahead of his nearest  competitor, finishing in a meet record time of 48.12.   In the 4x100, the  home team of Lake Braddock came together to run a meet record time of  43.37.

One of the best races of the day was the 4x800. Lake Braddock, with the  help of their 1:56 leadoff leg, found the guts to outlast rival West  Springfield to capture the 4x800 in a time of 8:02.

The biggest story of the day, however, did not involve any running at all.  Alan Webb, who so many had come to see, decided not to compete at the  Invitational this weekend.   "He is training through this week", stated the South Lakes coach.   Alan will take his talents to North Carolina next week as he attempts to  become the 4th American to ever break the 4 minute mile barrier as a high schooler.
