5/20/00 at University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Charlotte NC Herbster ClassicWebb 4:03.33 - Brookshire 4:08.41South Lakes Reston VA jr Alan Webb, fastest US high school miler in 33 years, did not break 4 minutes, but he got a PR and thrilled a big crowd in an electric atmosphere Saturday night 5/20 at UNC Charlotte in the Herbster Classic's Nike Golden Mile.
The boys mile - the Nike Golden Mile - is the featured attraction of this meet. Last year's inaugural Herbster Classic saw a stirring duel between Ricky Brookshire and Phillip West, with Brookshire winning by less than a second in 4:11.28, one of the fastest miles of 1999. This year's meet may see something not seen in the US for 33 years: a sub-4 minute mile by a high school boy. Alan Webb of South Lakes Reston VA, who ran a 3:59.9 1600 meter split at the Penn Relays, is entered. And there are some good milers to keep him honest, most notably defending champion Brookshire. Ricky's senior prom is also Saturday night, and it looked as if he might stay home in Boone NC and miss the Charlotte dance. But on Thursday 5/18, meet director Brad Herbster announced that Brookshire would make both events. "The faster he runs, the sooner he can get to the prom," Herbster said. Herbster also expanded the field to 14. Here is the expected lineup for the Nike Golden Mile, which will run about 8:30 pm: Alan Webb 11 - South Lakes Reston VA - burst into the
national consciousness last June when he ran a 4:06.94 mile in the Foot Locker
National Outdoor at Raleigh, breaking the legendary Jim Ryun's record for a HS
sophomore - leads US this season in the mile (4:05.02c at the Taco Bell) and 800
meters (1: 50.41). It's not all about the mile, however. Two defending national champions will compete in their specialties: University of Kentucky recruit James Doaty of Louisville KY in the 800 meters and Tennessee signee Leigh Smith of Leesville Road NC in the javelin. The meet will be scored by states.
