Track & Field Meet - Preview
This meet will feature the Rockford MI distance stars, including Dathan
Ritzenhein, against Ohio's best. DyeStat will have complete
coverage Sunday. It should be a sub-9:00 3200 meters with
Ritzenhein challenged by Ohio cross country champion Steve Padgett and Ontario
3200 meter champion Adil Berkedele.
2000 PREVIEW
This season will be another great competition at the
Roosevelt Memorial Track and Field Meet. The event should be as
hot as the weather for this weekend. With a high of 85 degrees
for Saturday, all athletes will be ready to perform at their
best.
DAY ONE PREVIEW - MAY 5TH
BOYS COMPETITION
Dathan Ritzenhein (PR - 8:55 in 3200m) of Rockford HS (MI)
will be the main attraction. His top competition will come from
Ohio Cross Country Champion Steve Padgett of Cincinnati LaSalle
HS and Ontario 3200m Champion Adil Berkedele (PR - 9:10) of
Birchmont Park HS. Another top runner will be Abdi Adam (PR -
4:17 in 1600m) of Toledo Rogers HS.
The distance medley, 6400m relay and 3200m relay will be
exciting with Ohio State Div I Cross Country Champions Brunswick
HS, Cincinnati St Xavier HS (the runner-up team in Ohio) and
Rockford HS going head-to-head. Also, the Canadians should have
a strong performance from Birchmont Park HS.
The pole vault will feature five of the top vaulters in the
state of Ohio. If conditions are good, a 15-foot vault will be
needed to win this event.
GIRLS COMPETITION
Rockford HS (MI) will again be the favorite to sweep the
distance relays as they did last year. The will find stiff
competition from Brunswick HS (OH), Cleveland Heights and the
Tennessee Div I Cross-Country Team Champion Oak Ridge HS.
Rockford HS will be led by a threesome of Kalin Toedebusch
(PR - 5:00 in 1600m), Emily Blakeslee (PR - 5:13) and Kelsey
Toedesbusch. Oak Ridge HS will be led by Tennessee 1600m
Champion, Sarah Damon (PR - 5:05). Another top contender will
be Phoebe Stringstubb of Cleveland Heights.
In the field events, there are two outstanding throwers in
Ryan Mobley (PR - 43-0 in the shot put) of Dayton Christian HS
(OH) and Kim Sampson of Detroit Renaissance HS.
DAY TWO PREVIEW - MAY 6TH
BOYS COMPETITION
The sprinters will be in the spotlight on this day. There is
a deep field again in the sprint events. Last year the Ohio Div
I Champion didn't qualify for the final for the 100m Dash! The
favorite in the 100m Dash is last year's meet champion Antwaun
Rogers (PR - 10.47) of Middletown HS (OH). This field will
also feature Tyrone Gay (PR - 21.27 in 200m) of Lafayette HS
in Lexington, Kentucky. Tyrone was the 1999 Kentucky State
Champion in three events (100m/200m/400m). Also, there will be
Jeremy Richardson (PR- 21.57 in 200m) of Wayne HS (OH) and
Shannon Moye of Detroit Crockett HS (PR - 22.47).
The 400m Dash will feature two of the favorites for the title
in Ohio. JJ Wardi (PR 0 48.35) of Colonel White HS (OH) will
battle against Jeremy Roberts (PR - 4851) of Whitmer HS in
Toledo, Ohio. Wardi finished ahead of Roberts in last year's
meet, but Roberts topped Wardi in the State Meet. Wardi has
already run a 47.3 split in the 4x4 relay this season.
The hurdles will be led by Ohio Div II Champion Keith Roberts
of Bellefontaine HS (OH) and Gary McGee (PR - 14.19) of
Reynoldsburg HS (OH), as well as, Gary Stanford (PR - 13.90)
of Detroit Mumford HS.
The 400m and 800m Relays will be a battle between Middletown
HS (OH) and Wayne HS (OH). Both relay teams have gone below 42
seconds in the 4x100.
GIRLS COMPETITION
The 100m Dash will be a "Battle of Champions". The
favorite is '99 meet champion and Pennsylvania Class A
Champion Lauryn Williams (PR - 11.53) of Rochester HS.
Williams will attempt to complete the 100-200 double again this
season. Her top competitors will be 2-time Ohio Div I state
champion Khalilah Carpenter (PR - 11.72 & 23.89) of
Brookhaven HS (OH) and Michigan Champion Tiarra Jones (PR -
11.88) of Detroit Cass Tech HS.
Julia Redd (PR -56.05) of Detroit Dominican HS, the
Michigan Class C Champion, will lead the field in the 400m Dash.
Other top contenders will include the versatile Kristen Dodd of
Toledo Rogers HS and Melanie Williams (PR - 24.90 & 57.38)
of Southfield HS (MI)
The long jump will feature Michigan Class B Champion Brandis
O'Neal of Detroit Renaissance HS
