T. C. Williams Invitational

5/6/00 at T. C. Williams HS, Alexandria VA

Preview by DyeStat

Alexandria VA will be the HS track hot spot of the East Coast May 6 as Dwight Thomas and Sheena Johnson headline the entry list.  In addition, invaders from New Jersey (Camden) and Wyoming (Alicia Craig) will take on top performers in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

Here are some highlights of the entry lists:

Boys

Dwight Thomas, Northwestern MD, is entered in the 100 and 200; if he shows, it will be his first meet representing a high school since the 1999 National Scholastic Indoor, where he was the sprint champion.  Ineligible academically the second semester of 1999, Thomas had a 100-200 double at the PanAm Junior Championships last summer, and he won the Simplot Games 60 meters in February running unattached.

Rickey Harris is also entered in the 100, along with a gang of worthy local sprinters, but Harris is skipping the hurdles after his shoulder injury at the Penn Relays last Saturday.

Dwight's brother Dwayne Thomas, a member of Northwestern's 1999 national champion 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams, is seeded 1-2 in the 400 and 800.

Camden NJ invades Virginia in the hurdles (Dwight Ruff) and relays (3:14.74 top seed in the 4x400).

Girls

Sheena Johnson, fresh off her MVP performance at the Penn Relays, is entered in five events: long jump, 100 and 300 hurdles, 100 meters, triple jump. In the 100 she will get fierce competition from Maryland stars Chiquita Stephens and Teyarnte Carter, as well as Camethia Baker of Delaware. The 200 will also be a war between Alyssa Aiken, Teyarnte Carter, Largo MD stars Stephens and Lakisha Brooks, and Baker.

Alicia Craig, of Campbell County WY, will be in the area attending a wedding and is entered in the 1600 and 3200.  Craig won the Simplot Games indoor 1600 and ran second to Alejandra Barrientos outdoors in the Arcadia Invitational.  Local leader Erin Swain, of Lake Braddock VA, will challenge Craig in the 1600.

The 400 meters will see two top 10 national leaders, Alyssa Aiken of Chantilly VA and Marie Giles of Bethel VA, go at it. Both have run under 55 seconds.

Largo MD, which was in the finals at the Penn Relays, heads the 4x100 and 4x400 fields.
