36th Centennial Invitational
This meet featured a great boys 3000 meter race. The top 16 in the field all finished under 9:00
min, with Ian Dobson and Noel Paulson within a second of
each other. Dobson won in 8:18.16 and Paulson was 2nd in 8:18.72. (about 21
seconds ahead of the next finishers).
The weather was perfect, clear and cool. Dobson took the early lead at the front of a pretty tight pack. At around a mile he began to
lengthen the lead slowly followed by Kyle Robinson and Chris Clancy.
With around 800m to go Paulson left the chase pack and began moving up, from about 20 or so meters behind Dobson.
Paulson was right on Dobson's heels over the last 300m with the two running stride-for-stride, but
it's pretty tough to run down somebody like Ian. The times for their final lap were 61 seconds for Dobson and 60 for Paulson.
These turned out to be the 3rd and 5th all-time fastest high school 3000m ever run in
Oregon and a PR for both.. Paulson broke the Oregon 3A record by 6 seconds.
The Oregon State Meet may see more records fall as US#3 Eric Logsdon joins
these US#1 Dobson and US#2 Paulson, although Paulson runs in a different
class..
