District 4-5A
By
CHARLES SALZER
Special to the Advocate Glen Oak's boys and Baker's girls ran away with the team titles at the District 4-5A track and field championships Thursday afternoon at Catholic High. The Panthers and Buffaloes each enjoyed a banner day as the respective team races were quickly turned into a battle for second place. Glen Oaks swept six of seven field events and eventually posted a total of 10 firsts. The Panthers easily outscored second-place Baker 201-130 for the boys title. Led by three wins from Natalie Sowell, Baker's girls recorded seven firsts on their way to victory. Like Glen Oaks' boys, the Buffaloes started early with five wins in field events before holding off Glen Oaks' girls 188-125. Sowell led Baker with victories in the long jump (17 feet, 4 inches), the 100 (11.99 seconds) and the 200 (25.86). Sowell also anchored the 4x100 relay and totaled a meet-high 32.5 points. Chandra Sims led Baker in field events, winning the high jump (4-8) and placing second in the triple jump. Sims' 18 points earned her outstanding field performer. Khrystal London of Glen Oaks was named outstanding track performer after winning the 800 (2:23.58) and finishing second in the 1,600 and 3,200. Other Baker firsts came from Robin Wells in the discus (98-8), Tyeshia Poulard in the shot put (36-7) and Vanessa Deggins in the triple jump (31-3) "We never dreamed it would go this well," Daigle said. "We've gotten points from girls I didn't expect to get them from." Two of those girls were Chenita Beckham and Kathy Slaughter. The pair competed in the 100-meter low hurdles for the first time and earned 12 points. Glen Oaks' boys had no multiple winners, but came close to sweeping all of the field events before cruising to their team win. "We had a couple of bad events, but overall I'm pleased with our performance," Glen Oaks coach Greg Thompson said. "Field events have been there all year and they pulled through again. On the track, the guys kept coming in second, third, fourth, -- I'm ecstatic. "The team came together well. They were like a pit bull. They got the lead and didn't let go of it." The Panthers were led by Brandon Cockerham's 16 points, all in field events. Cockerham won the pole vault (7-0) and finished third in the triple jump. Other field wins for the Panthers included Lennard Patton in the shot put (51-6), Kerry Gremillion in the triple jump (41-1) and Brent Wilson in the long jump (21-1). LSU football signee Marcus Randall competed in the javelin for the second time this season, winning the event at 159-3. Deidric Shelmire won the discus (131-9) despite having thrown only as far as 121 during the season. The Panthers picked up track wins in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Glen Oaks also got wins from Jerrod Ford in the 110 high hurdles (15.21) and Anthony Lee in the 3,200 (11:09.33). Lyndrell Mikell of Denham Springs was named outstanding track performer with 22 1/2 points. Mikell won the 100 (10.22) and the 200 (21.68). Baker's Jared Jenkins was a dual winner taking the high jump (6-3) and the 400 (50.00). Belaire got wins from Hampton Darensbourg in the 1,600 (4:47.06) and Chad Jones in the 800 (2:07.54).
