The 20th running of the CCS (Central Coast Section) Top 8 Classic was just that, a classic.

Numerous section bests, school and personal records were set in the midst of heated head to head competitions. There was even a national best effort by Alejandra Barrientos.

On a cool, spring afternoon and evening, the meet, which invites just the top eight track and field athlete from the Central Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation which stretches from the north in San Francisco to the south near King City, west from the Pacific Ocean and east to the foothills of San Jose/ Silicon Valley, showcased athletes who are just beginning to reach their peaks two weeks before their league championship meets which begin the charge to the state meet in June.

Girls Highlights

Girl's competition seemed to be the richest in more events. For instance, the CCS now boasts three of the top four 800-meter times in the nation.

While there weren't national bests in many events, the competition was fierce everywhere.

The 400-meter relay opened with three teams dipping under 50 seconds as host Los Gatos led the way clocking 49.36 to win.

Then the competition got really cranking as the girls 1600 was decided by one one-hundredth of a second. The winner's name, Barrientos, is familiar by now but it was not the junior Alejandra who won. Her younger sister, Raquel, just a freshman, took the title to keep the metric mile crown in the family as Ale won it last year.

The brash freshman opened with a healthy 68.7 initial 400 and had the field stretched out behind her. The chase pack included former Cal state meet XC champ Angela Sanchez and Los Gatos' Michelle Beritzhoff.

Soon after the 400 mark, she relinquished the lead to Beritzhoof and the paced slowed to a saner 2:30 at the halfway point and 3:51 at 1200.

Two steps into the bell lap, the Barrientos' blood took control as Raquel bolted to the lead, committed to hold the lead to the end. She extended her lead to almost 3 meters by the final furlong mark. But Bertitzhoof wasn't about to just fold and give her the race. She scratched her way, inch by inch back towards Barrientos, pulling even with a little less than 50 meters to go.

As the crowd roared with approval and encouragement, the two went at it stride for stride to the finish line.

"All I could think about in the last 100 was running faster and leaning at the finish," said Barrientos. "I think I may have had a little more left."

But not much. The photo gave the freshman the nod in 5:06.93 (a PR) to Beritzhoff's 5:06.94 (a PR). Sanchez, who has had troubles until recently showed she is on her way back with a fine 5:11.02 third place finish.

The 100 meter hurdles was absent the section's top barrier jumper, Monterey's Sani Roseby who hasn't run since she doubled in the 400/100 at Stanford and pulled up just past the finish of her 11.87 photo loss there. She still is suffering from a lower hamstring injury and reportedly hasn't run since then.

But Tamara Gulley of Oak Grove used Roseby's absence and an ample tailwind to crush the existing meet record of 14.65 with a sizzling 13.77. Multi-talented LaToya Phillips (left - photo by Marty Kruger) grabbed second place in 14.23, a seasonal best and just off the Mitty senior's sixth place finish time at the CA state meet last year.  Phillips also won the triple jump with a fine 38-1.25 effort.  Gulley also won the 200 in 25.18.

The 400, also without Roseby who opened and ended her one-lap career with a 53+ at Stanford, went to defending CCS champ and state finalist Maggie Vessey who used a brilliant start to overtake the runners outside her by 150 meters out. San Lorenzo Valley's Lindsay Scarborough, who will run this distance on the Cougar's DMR record bid at Penn next week, lowered her PR from 58.48 to 57.49. Milpitas' Angela Brown was third in 57.62.

If there is a weakness in the CCS girls it is in the shorter sprints.

Milpitas' Deirdre Reese won the 100, with a substantial tailwind, in just 12.49.

The 800 was to be the race of the meet with Los Gatos' Hennessey, with her 2:10 at arcadia positioned to take on Ale Barrientos who has yet to run under 2:16.9. But Hennessey suffered a foot injury recently and did not race. Barrientos and coach Rob Collins were apprised of Hennessey's injury many days before the race by a dejected but courteous Los Gatos coach Willie Harmatz so she had time to prepare mentally for a fast time alone. She was prepared and set out with an ambitious goal of breaking 2:10 alone.

Her first 200 was right on her planned pace, hitting right at 31.3 seconds. Her 400 was just at 62.8, and her 600 at 1:36.7. She closed with a 32+ final 200 and looked smooth and relaxed the entire race and admitted that she did not load up with lactate in the final 100, or anywhere during her 2:09.35 meet record and national best time.

"I could have run faster if someone was pushing me," said Barrientos.

Those who watched agreed that she looked comfortable enough to go at least 4-5 seconds faster.

Surprisingly behind her, within in striking distance the entire race was Shannon Rowbury of Silver Creek who dropped her PR from 2:17.8 to 2:10.88. Rowbury never challenged Barrientos, but kept her effort honest.

The 300 lows followed with Deanne Slaton from Silver Creek speeding to an excellent 43.85. SLV's Scarborough, in just her third trip over the barriers this season nailed a big PR and school record with a hand timed 44.8.

The 3200 was an honest if not fast race with Gunn High School's Ruth Graham out sprinting freshman Leonora Sanchez from Aptos 11:04.2 to 11:07.2. Rosalinda Castenado grabbed third in 11:09.1.

The 4 x 400 pitted league rivals SLV against Soquel with the Knights having a better entry time by three seconds. But the Cougars were on fire Friday night, setting a total of seven school records on the evening.

Shiloh Whiting who had Pr'ed in 2:19.03 for third place in the 800 opened with a leg near 63. Scarborough went from 15 meters back to 30+ meters in front when she passed to Raquel Barrientos as the clock hit 1:59+. The younger Barrientos actually opened the lead for her sister and was timed in 61+. Ale Barrientos ran scared as Soquel's Vessey was chasing her, albeit from 40 meters back. Officials clocked Ale at 57.2 and SLV won in 3:59.37, a school record by 5 seconds. Vessey nailed a 56 second anchor for Soquel who was second place in 4:04.15.

In the field events, Soquel High's vaulters did it again going 1-2 with Chelsea Connelley nabbing first in a meet record and PR 11-10. Teammate Buffie Ryan was second and equaled the meet record of 11-0.

Elzunia Lamb of Hollister won the long jump with a leap of 18-6.5 well short of her seasonal best of 19-5. She had her best jumps after running 14.94 for third in the 100 lows.

"I didn't have much speed at the board before the hurdle race," said the blond senior. "The hurdles seemed to wake me up a bit."

Second place was Soquel's Vessey with a PR 17-9.5.

Boys Highlights

The boys competition at the CCS Top 8 Classic was good but the marks were a bit mediocre for a meet of this stature. While the girls in the CCS seem to be one of the top sections in the country, the boys are having a down year in just about every event.

The sprints are an area where the CCS is really suffering with winning times like 10.82 and 21.97 by Antwon Guidry of Leigh High School demonstrating the off year the central coast of California is having this season. Those marks had a fairly stiff wind behind them also. Second place in those events were 11.02 and 22.35, nothing to write home about.

Even the 400 and 800 showed the slump. Brian Edwards of Los Gatos won the 400 in 49.11 as just three runners broke 50. Matt Bates, also of Los Gatos, took both the 800 and 1600. His 800 mark was 1:55.00. But he may have been able to run much faster with some competition. Second place was 2.29 seconds back.

In the distance events, the Top 8 Classic finally produced some great racing and decent times. Bates led out the 1600 through laps of 64, 2:10 but then slowed noticeably on the back stretch of the third lap. Just as the field began to bunch up around the far turn, Bates bolted away in a near sprint, catching everyone by surprise. Using a 59 second final 400, he was able to clock 4:17.23 well ahead of Neil Davis of Bellarmine's 4:21.06.

The 3200 was wonderful as Neil McDonaugh from St. Ignatius and sophomore Brett Gotcher of Aptos gradually pulled away from the rest of the field. After going through the 1600 in 4:37, a fast time was in the making with McDonaugh and Gotcher running with a meter between them. Del Mar's Dawit Gezahgn lurked some 20 meter behind them, struggling to hang on. Then with 1000 meters to go, Gezaghn suddenly sprinted up to and passed the two leaders. Both took chase and McDonaugh caught Gezaghn with 600 to go while Gotcher looked like his day might be done. Coming down the home stretch just before the bell lap. Gotcher suddenly got a second wind and burst to the front in full flight and took a 7-8 meter lead onto the backstretch. Now it was McDonaugh's turn to respond and he sprinted after the diminutive sophomore from Aptos reaching his shoulder with 100 meters to go. McDonaugh had one more gear and used it in the final 50 meters to pull away from Gotcher and win in 9:17.9 with Gothcer right there in 9:18.2. Gezaghn faded to 9:23.0 just holding off Los Gatos' Russ Martin's 9:23.5.

The hurdle races reflected the lack of speed in the section with the 110's going to Justin Scott of Independence in 14.92, the only runner under 15.00. The 300 IH was won in 39.57 by Maurice Mann of Monterey, one of only two who broke 40 seconds.

Bellarmine and San Lorenzo Valley had quite the dual in the 4 x 400 to finish the meet as they exchanged the lead 4 or 5 times. Bellarmine's quick handoffs were the difference as the Bells nipped the Cougars 3:23.90 to 3:24.06. SLV's time was a school record anchored by Gabe Vega's 49.2.

Nick Fennell of Wilcox took the shot put with a toss of 54-4 over Adam Tafralis (father Greg) 53-9. Tony Miranda of Sacred Heart used the nice quartering wind for a winning throw of 173-4.
