Jack Ward's review of the meet

Perfect track weather for an April meet in Idaho with the temps in the mid 60s for Friday and mid 70s on Saturday, and the performances were proof. Many Idaho State 2000 best marks fell this weekend. It was hoped that many of the Northwestern states would show, but several top athletes were at Arcadia and other places. With the exception of strong hurdling performances by athletes from Gervais High school in Oregon, the Micron meet turned into a preview of the Idaho State Meet. The State's top athletes were there with the exception of Moscow's Jenny Liou(800, 1600, 3200), Jerome's Alicia McLimore(100,200,400) and Dusty Schvaneveldt(800, 1600, 3200), Hillcrest's Janae Johnson(1600, 3200), and Highland's Aubrie Latimore(100,200) and Morgan Anderson(1600, 3200).

The most exciting races were certainly in the distance events. The Girls 1600 and 3200 turned into a Boise battle, with Boise high's Robin Witcher, and Capital's Jessie Doty sprinting at the end of both races. Witcher won the 3200 by 1 second over Doty, and had to fight off both Doty and Skyview High's Jennifer McPherson(Doty finished 3rd).

The boy's 1600 and 3200 was another Boise battle with Borah's Terry Allen going shoulder to shoulder with Centennial's Tyler Williams. Allen's strategy was to fall back the last 200 and then kick the last 100....it almost worked, but Williams held on for a .5 of second victory. Allen tried to burn Williams in the 1600 with a blistering 2:04 pace at 800. Allen still had an 8 second lead at 1200m but the wheels came off with 200 to go and Williams won by 3 Seconds. The District and State Meets should be even more exciting.

Also, Tara Schwager is showing her dominance in the Sprints winning the 100, 200, and 400 to go along with her winning Long Jump. A duel at State with Jerome's Mclimore and Highland's Latimore is certainly in the making, but the Freshman sensation Jessica Borchers of Borah will most definitely have say in the outcome.

Hopefully we will see more States here next year..............
