Girls on fire at Stanford
"Race of the meet" turns out to
be" time trial of the week"
by Marty Kruger
Aisha Margain outleans Sani Roseby, both in record 11.87
Eight meet records dotted a near perfect spring
day at Angel Field for the first Stanford Invitational of the new
millennium and many other meet bests were nearly topped. Temps in the mid
to upper 60's and only late afternoon breezes made for almost ideal
conditions
The girls performed particularly well as they
exceeded seven meet standards.
Most notably, Sani Roseby, of Monterey High
School, showed her versatility as one of the nation's best sprinters.
Known mostly as a short sprinter/hurdler, Moseby, who was a CA state meet
finalist in the 100, 200, and 100LH last year, demonstrated her range by
setting a new meet record (54.76) in the 400 when she bolted out of the
blocks and down the backstretch on Cobb Track then held on for a 1.5
second win in her first competitive venture over two furlongs. And she did
it from lane eight.
Soquel's Maggie Vessey, a CA state meet 400
finalist last year was second in 56.24.
Roseby then came back and set a new meet record
in the 100, a sizzling 11.87. She did not win the race however, as the
finish photo gave the nod to Berkeley's Aisha Margain who's finish
surge over the last 10 meters caught Moseby at the tape. Margain also was
given an 11.87.
Margain was also a member of Berkeley's meet
record 4 x 100 relay team who cruised a 50.41 in the qualifying heats but
gave it their all in the final where they posted a national best 46.87 to
top Skyline High's 1994 mark of 46.99.
The foursome also took the 4 x 400 relay in
3:50.73 winning by a whopping 13 seconds and break the meet record of
3:51.22.
All four relay team members followed their coach
from San Lorenzo High School to Berkeley this year.
In the throws, Stanford-bound, Jill
Camarena (right), won the discus (158-2) and then set a meet record in the shot with a fine
put of 46-7.25. Camarena is the national leader in the discus throwing 161
feet even two weeks ago at the Cardinal Classic at Hughes Stadium in
Sacramento.
"I've been working on my technique a lot
this week," said the friendly Camarena after the discus.
"Turning my foot and getting into the (power) position at the front
of the ring. The throws felt very easy."
Camarena, throwing without a breeze, had a fine
series with three throws over 150 feet. Teammate Katie McKeever finish
second in both events.
In the Pole Vault, Soquel High (Santa Cruz, CA)
teammates Buffy Ryan and Chelsea Connolly went 1-2 as both topped the
existing meet record of 10-6 by clearing 11-0. Each had good attempts at
11-6 as a strong cross wind began to hamper their efforts near the end on
the competition. Coach Joe Myoshi has had CA state meet qualifiers in the
vault each year since the event was recognized for girls. see

In the race the meet announcer called "the
best race of the meet", the girls 3000, competition failed to
materialize so the event became the "time trial of the meet"
when Alejandra Barrientos' chief rival, Sara Bei of Montgomery, did not
show as she was reportedly sick. The San Lorenzo Valley junior had to run
alone, taking the lead in the first step off the starting line and
steadily pulling away. After a first lap around 71 seconds, Barrientos
(left) settled into consistent 78 second laps, going through the first 1600 in
5:09. With the announcer and crowd pushing her over the last 200 meters,
which she covered in 32 seconds, Barrientos missed Julia Stamps meet
record by less than three seconds.
"Ale didn't even open up until 150 meters
left and she still ran 32," said coach Rob Collins. "It's
really disappointing that Sara was not here. It's getting harder and
harder to find competition for Ale."
Perhaps the mile at Arcadia in two weeks will
take care of this problem. Not only will she run the mile there but she
will be anchoring SLV's distance med team a couple hours after the mile.
Arcadia was Barrientos' official coming out
party last year when she stunned the prep track world with a national best
4:47.97 in her first big race. Last year at the Stanford meet, she did not
even break 5:00. This year, she hasn't run slower than 4:53.
Younger sister Raquel, a freshman, ran 5:10.97
for a mile PR, in 7th place behind winner Jenny Aldridge.
Aldridge (Maria Carillo, Santa Rosa,CA) followed Spring Dawson, Vallejo (3rd,
5:05.63), who led the first lap as is her usual tactic, and jumped Bidget
Duffy (St. Mary's-Berkeley) with 400 to go and was the only girl under
five minutes clocking a fine 4:56.93 PR. Duffy ran a strong 5:01.01 for
second place.
Aldridge also led off her team's winning 3200
meter relay which won in 9:47.60. Her opening 800 was 2:19.9. See
picture of Jenny Aldridge in the mile.
In the throws, teammates again went 1-2 as Jill
Camarena and Katie McKreever of Woodland control the concrete rings in
both the shot and discus. The Stanford-bound Camarena, the national leader
in the discus with a throw of 161-even two weeks ago at the Cardinal
Invitational at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento, wonboth events. Her fine
series in the discus with three tosses over 150, finished with a best of
158-2. McKeever was second throwing a fine 139-11.
In the shot, the two took first and second again
with Camarena setting the meet record with a put of 46-7. McKeever hit
44-4.
Without Sani Roseby in the race, La Toya
Phillips, of Archbishop Mitty HS, ran a meet record 14.33 in the 100 meter
low hurdles just under the previous best of 14.38.
Jeena Grimaldi, St. Ignatius, won the high jump
at 5-6, well off the 5-10 she cleared two weeks ago at the K-Bell Classic
in San Jose.
The boys had just one meet record but scared
quite a few.
The only meet record set by boys on Saturday was
in the long jump where Brandon Parker, Lincoln-Stockton, used his fourth
and final jump to take the lead and set a new meet record of 23-6.5. On
his final jump of the day, West Valley's Jeff billings had taken the
lead by landing 22-11 into the sand. His lead lasted one jump. Parker's
jump was also a Cobb Track & Angel Field record.
Halihl Guy, of St Mary's-Berkeley, continued
his school's rich hurdling history by starting the day, at 8:30 AM, with
a win in the 400 intermediate hurdles. His time of 55.88 was well of
second place finisher Ben Bogdanoff's brother Tim's 1998 meet record
of 53.97.
In the 3200 relay, Bellermine Prep opened with a
1:57 leg but was eventually caught by Woodcreek High's team which ran
8:03.00 just off the 8:00.35 MR. Bellermine was second in 8:04.00.
The closest athlete to another record was St.
Mary's Ebon Glenn who won the high jump by clearing 6-10 with a lot of
daylight under his backside. He had two good attempts at the meet record
of 7-0 which is held by his coach, Jeff Rogers. See
picture of Glenn
Atwater's Rusty Price took both throws. Price
put the shot 58-9.25 and threw the discus 164-6. His discus mark was
"just" 50 feet shy of the meet record. See
picture of Price
That's no typo. The meet record is held by Reno's
Kami Keshmeri, who threw 214-11 in 1987!
Valley of Sacramento nearly nabbed the distance
medley relay mark by running 10:28.77. An anchor leg of 4:22.2 just about
caught the 10:26.50 meet best by Mission San Jose in 1997.
Santa Clara's Gamay Guangul ran a tactically
fine 3000 as he stayed in the middle of the lead pack until 600 meters to
go when he bolted to the lead and caught nearly everyone off guard. Only
second place finisher Fernando Cabada of Buchanan tried to go with him.
Guangul was just 1.5 seconds shy of the meet record with his 8:36.06.
Cabada was timed in 8:37.42. Third place fifnisher Niel Davis of
Bellermine Prep led most the race before fading in the wake of Guangul's
kick. Davis ran 8:41.16. See
picture of boys 3000
Mike Pluth, of Sheldon-Eugene,OR, won a tactical
mile in 4:22.56 over Matt Bates' of Los Gatos 4:22.87.
Clovis West ran the third fastest 400 relay in
California this season, winning in 41.62.
