ROCKFORD MICHIGAN GIRLS shatter the national 4xMile record by 18 seconds in 20:23.24 at the Nike Indoor Classic in the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse at Indiana University, Bloomington IN. Bingham UT 20:31.27 and Colonie NY 20:34.22 also beat old record, set in 1982 by N. Quincy MA.
The 4xMile relay was added to the Nike meet by meet directors Mike Byrnes and Jim Spier to set up a possible new US record after Bingham UT won the Great American Cross Country Festival race of champions last September and were proclaimed the best US girls cross country team of all time. Colonie NY, which was not at Charlotte, wanted a crack at Bingham after winning the New York Federation cross country championship over perennial national champion Saratoga Springs.
As the race started the Bingham-Colonie duel seemed in the cards as Bingham's Jackie Zeigle edged Colonie's Jen Kramer in a blistering 4:57 opening leg. But midway through the second leg Rockford's Linsey Blaisdell (5:02 split) moved strongly to the lead. The baton then went in turn to Emily Blakeslee (5:08) and Kalin Toedebusch (5:05) and the lead stretched out to 100 meters.
The crowd cheered for the record as Toadebusch ran the last two laps alone, and they got it. Rockford, which ran away with the national distance medley championship at Raleigh last June, took a joyous victory lap as the crowd continued to cheer loudly.
A couple of hours later, Rockford came back and won the Distance Medley relay impressively in 12:02.81.
