This race pitted NEISHA BERNARD against dark-horse NIKEYA GREEN. Coach Phil Saunders felt his young prot�g� Green was ready for the big time, "I think she can go well under 2:10," he commented before the race. Not today. Perhaps feeling the pressure of running for the Nike Championship she clocked a fine 2:12.06 (#6-US) but couldn't match the savvy of Bernard who seemingly breezed to a superb 2:11.28 (#2-US.) Bernard pushed the pace from the gun challenging the Virginian, and anyone else who cared to tag along, with a fast 31.7 opening lap. She hit the 400m mark at 63.4 (32.4) and never let anyone into the race. Green tried gamely to hang on but to no avail. 1:37.9 with a lap to go (34.5), Bernard's final 33.4 dashed the hopes of an upset win for Green. Three juniors, TRICIA BOHAN, IN, THERESA FELDKAMP, OH and NICOLE COOK, VA followed with Ohio's CAITLIN PHILLIPS nailing down the final medal.
