Nike Indoor Classic - 3/11-12/2000 at Bloomington IN

Boys 800 Meters

James Doaty 1:53.57

James Doaty, 1999 national outdoor champion, outfought Canadian Erik Sproll in the stretch to win a great race in 1:53.57.  Doaty led sharply through 400 meters in 54+.  Sproll took the lead on lap 3 and seemed in command until Doaty fought back on the backstretch of the last lap.  Doaty took over turning for home and crossed the finish with his index finger raised high.

Doaty -- who else?

Race analysis by Mike Byrnes

THE 800m was an international test. Kentucky's JAMES DOATY (1:52.23) taking on one of Canada's brightest young middle distance hopes, ERIK SPROLL. Sproll had made headlines last year when he'd won the Canadian Legion (one step under Junior-age competition) with an awesome 1:51.44. He came to Bloomington with the express purpose of taking on the '99 USL.

This was about as close to an old time match race as you can get. But there were others. Pennsy state champ JOE PLEVELICH (1:53.53) and PAUL CIURLYS (1:53.16) looked to be factors.

At the gun Doaty was out fast, perhaps too much so. He passed the 200m mark in 25.7 a good 8-9m to the good. The pace slowed perceptibly but Doaty still maintained a healthy lead with his 54.7 split. But Sproll was waiting patiently for the American to falter. And falter he did, with a 31.1 3rd lap. The Canadian pounced and quickly took the lead.

The race appeared over. But Doaty, a magnificent champion, responded as only those types can. He rallied and with 30m left went by the Canadian champion. The Kentuckian, a huge grin upon his face, exultantly raised his arms in victory, losing perhaps a second, but reveling in the moment. He took the NIC title in 1:53.57 with Sproll just back, 1:53.88.

Plevelich grabbed the bronze, 1:55.81. Two Michigan kids sandwiched Virginian JEREMY CADLE for the final three spots, JACOB CROWE and TOM GREENLESS each taking home a bronze and earning All American status.
