Running in lane 5, Demus seemed to make up the stagger on Fairley on the backstretch of the first lap, but Fairley stubbornly held the lead after the break and down the backstretch again. But then Demus accelerated on the far turn and passed Fairley at the top of the home stretch (below).

In both the 200m and 400m, trials are held and the fastest six advance. This makes for a tension-filled arena as the slightest distraction can mean the difference between moving on to the finals or a long trip home. 40 states were represented in Bloomington and in most of the events 5-6 states were represented. Such was the case in all four of these fields.
One of the most amazing athletes of the meet is
Mississippi's
CHRISTY FAIRLEY. On Friday night she starred in the state championship
basketball game only to see her Lucedale team lose in the closing
seconds. The loss was more agonizing, and tiring, since it took
double-overtime.
Early next morning Fairley and coach Melanie Black boarded
a flight to Indiana. Fairley took a nap, went to the track and easily
qualified for Sunday's final, only .05 behind '99 AOY LeShinda Demus'
55.23. "I think she could have run better if she'd had more sleep and
a lot more track practice," understated Black. "About all she's
done recently was I took her to a Boy's meet and she won." Black
chuckled softly and went on, " She did 53.5 so I knew she was
kinda (sic) ready." But so was Virginia's ALYSSA AIKEN. She
blistered a good 55.58 and looked ready, willing and able for the final.
But it was not to be.
Demus wasn't named AOY for nothing and she showed her
mettle in Sunday's final. At the gun she and Fairley fought for the
lead with the Mississippian gaining the advantage and leading at the 200m
mark. Demus trailed slightly with Aiken a stride back. With 100m to go
Demus struck. She moved slightly to the outside and with power more
reminiscent of a wide-track Pontiac than a 17-year old youngster, moved
swiftly past the tiring Fairley and took the
gold, 53.85 - 54.86 with Aiken losing heart and ground to grab the bronze,
56.20. Georgia's BIANCA WILLIS edged Tennessee champ MARQUITA DAVIS for
fourth with teammate HENRIETTA GEORGE taking the final medal.
