In both the 200m and 400m, trials are held and the fastest six advance. This makes for a tension-filled arena as the slightest distraction can mean the difference between moving on to the finals or a long trip home. 40 states were represented in Bloomington and in most of the events 5-6 states were represented. Such was the case in all four of these fields.
A near-costly mistake almost cost Florida champion AARON LUSTER a place in the final. In the trials he appeared to be powering to a sub-49 clocking when, with about 30m to go, he inexplicably slowed, perhaps forgetting only the fastest 6 would move on. He turned in a 49.46, the slowest of the qualifiers. Missing the cut were five notables, Thomas Lewis, NC; Denye Versher, CA; Tyson Gay, KY; Obra Hogans, GA; and Travon Walton, CA. All had turned in outstanding performances only to come up short here.
RICKEY HARRIS, Virginia's great intermediate hurdler, was the clear favorite to most observers but he had a problem. In fact, he had two problems. One, the 60mH final came up only a few minutes after the 400m final. Should he run conservatively and save something? Problem Number Two, ANTHONY EWERS, NY. Ewers came into Bloomington the USL at both 300m (33.27) and 400m (48.0).
In the final Ewers threw down the gauntlet early as he sped through
the first 200m in 22.47 with Harris trailing Luster, both about 4m in
arrears. Ewers never let up and off the final straight Harris moved past
the now-faltering Luster and then realized his dreams of a double-ring
were gone. Ewers crossed in an absolutely stunning 48.10 with Harris
just back at 48.38 and Luster, 48.83. Pennsylvania soph TROY ROBERSON
