Lake Braddock rallies again in 4x400

by Pearl Watts

For the second time in two weeks the Lake Braddock boys team moved from second place behind West Potomac to a championship trophy by winning the last event while the Hayfield girls squad captured their first ever regional title last Saturday at the George Mason Fieldhouse. The Lake Braddock boys trailed West Potomac 66-64 going into the last event, the 4x400 meter relay, with their top seeded quartet of Frank Francois, Tim Oliver, Brad Caldwell and Ashley Simmons needing a win in the event to secure at least a tie. West Potomac, which had led the Bruins by one point at the Patriot District championships two weeks ago only to see Lake Braddock capture the 4x400 to eke out the team victory, witnessed deja' vu all over again as Lake Braddock won the 4x400 in a swift 3 minutes, 26.33 seconds while the Wolverines who were in second place into the final straightaway with the possibility of a team title tie with Lake Braddock, fell back to fifth for the final 74-68 margin of victory.

The Hayfield girls team, which had been the runnerup to Lake Braddock at districts, utilized their top loaded prowess with eight finishes in either a first or second place of the fifteen events which produced 72 of their 84 points. Jefferson, the Concorde District girls runnerup, also was strong at the top in winning the 4x800 relay for the third year in a row and four individual events which accounted for 50 of their 71.5 second place points.

BOYS: The Lake Braddock boys, in winning the team title for the second time in three years, came through with expected finishes they had to have and also grabbed some extra valuable points in areas they had not quite expected. In addition to claiming the 1,600 meter relay the Bruins also won the 3,200 relay with their team of Peter Gardella, Jimmy Judge, John Bates and Tim Oliver in 8:00.64 and placed third in the 800 relay in gaining 26 out of a possible thirty points in the three relays. Lake Braddock also received second place finishes that they were counting on from Ashley Simmons in the 300 dash (35.22), Tim Oliver in the 1,000 run (2:33.32) and Garrett Brickner in the high jump (6 feet, 5 inches) with that trio putting up seasonal bests to accomplish their runnerup places. The Bruins were also greatly aided though, with two very valuable third place finishes from Frank Francois in the 500 dash (1:06.34) and Jeff Barnhart in the high jump (6-0) with those two performing better than expected to give their top rated 4x400 team a chance to win their event and therefore the meet.

A disheartened West Potomac squad was stopped just a little bit short in their bid for their first outright title since 1994. The Wolverines were paced by senior Jerry Harris, who set a meet record in the 500 dash at 1:04.64; ran the third leg on the winning 4x200 relay which also included Marques Coffie, Jermie Harris and Jamaal Mills; and placed second in the long jump at 22-6.25 and third in the 300 dash (36.12) in contributing to 34 of West Potomac's team points. West Potomac also grabbed a second place in the shot put from David Hawkins (48-9.25), ten points in the 55 dash from Mills and Coffie and third place in the triple jump from Jermie Harris (41-7.25) but some additional expected points in the horizontal jumps and 1,000 run may have spelled the difference for the Wolverines.

Centreville was able to grab third place with 46 points by virtue of just one person (Rickey Harris) and one other event (pole vault). Harris, competed in three events and for the second year in a row won all three of those events. Harris once again defended his title in the 55 meter hurdles and in so doing broke his own meet record of 7.26 with his winning time of 7.24 in the finals. The University of Florida bound Harris then came back ten minutes later to capture the 55 dash in 6.55 and later in the day won the 300 dash once again with his time of 34.86 to stake the Wildcats to thirty points. Centreville's other sixteen points were in the vault with sophomore David Sullivan upping his personal best this season an extra foot in winning with a height of 13-9 while senior Chris Jaikaran added the other points with his third place finish at 12-9.

Brandon Royster of Fairfax was the other multiple winner in individual events besides Harris as he won the long jump for the third year in a row (22-7.75) and was also the victor in the triple jump at 44-1 and placed second in the 55 hurdles (7.63) to account for 28 of Fairfax's 29 seventh place points.

South Lakes only scored ten points but they would certainly have to be considered "quality" points as Alan Webb sped around Mason's 200 meter unbanked surface in a nation leading 4:07.02 to break the region record in the 1,600 run set by West Springfield's Sharif Karie of 4:09.63 in 1997. Webb, looking as fit and strong as he has at any time this season, took the lead from the outset and seemed to be holding back for the first 400 meters which he went through in 63 seconds. That turned out to be the slowest 400 for the South Lakes junior as he then went through 800 meters in 2:05 and 1,200 in 3:06 enroute to his personal best ever indoors of 4:07.02.

Other winners included junior James Small of McLean, who just missed Karie's meet record in the 1,000 run of 2:30.23 with his state leading time of 2:30.45; senior Dave Silver of Jefferson, who went back and forth with Oakton's Matt Maline in the 3,200 run before finally breaking away in the last 600 meters to win in 9:34.06. Also, Teddy Presley of Oakton equalled his season's best in the high jump to win at 6-5 and Marshall's T.J. Stahl claimed shot put honors at 49-10.5

GIRLS: Although teams with a lot of depth can win district titles on many occasions, at the regional and state level it is the first and second place finishes that really add up and they certainly did so for Hayfield. The Hawks received expected victories from senior top seeds Nikeya Green in the 1,600 run (5:01.81), Lynsie Battle in the 500 dash (1:16.94), India Odum in the shot put (43-1) and from their top rated 1,600 relay of Cristina Borden, Nicole Smith, Green and Battle which set a new meet record of 3:59.65. Hayfield also grabbed four second place finishes with Green in the 1,000 run (3:00.31), Battle in the 300 dash (41.43), Borden in the 500 dash (1:18.41) and Carrie Bennett in the pole vault (10-6) along with a third place in the high jump from senior Teressa McGuire (5-2), a fourth from Battle in the long jump (16-7.75) and a fifth place from their 3,200 relay squad (9:49.36) to account for their scoring.

Jefferson did just about everything they could to mount the only serious challenge to Hayfield in scoring 71.5 points. The Colonials had a double winner in senior Nikki Woodhouse as she won both the long jump (18-5.75) and triple jump (38-2.25) and added a third field event jump win with Krystle Moss. The Jefferson junior soared 5-8.5 to break Kelli Flynn of T.C. Williams' ten year old record in the high jump of 5-8.25 and Moss also added a third place in the triple jump at 36-1.5. On the track, Jefferson also claimed two titles with Kelley Otstott winning the 1,000 run in a personal seasonal best of 2:58.27 after pulling away from Hayfield's Nikeya Green on the last lap and Otstott was also the anchor on the winning 3,200 relay team (9:37.02) which included Andrea Lopez, Monica Schlier-Smith and Aparna Nancherla.

Third place finisher Lake Braddock scored a solid 52 points but but did not notch points in the 55 hurdles and horizontal jumps that could have made the scoring closer. The Bruins were able to count on Erin Swain once again with the senior placing second in the 1,600 run at 5:08.09 and leading from start to finish in winning the 3,200 run (11:08.15) with her freshman sister Kelly Swain second in a personal best of 11:16.45. The Bruins other top finishers were freshman Meredith Brill in the 300 dash (41.71) and their 3,200 relay of (Meghan Moran, Kelly Dick, Cheryl Carr and Regent Salimbangon) [9:45.08] in third place. Concorde District champion Oakton had a good day in fourth place with 50 points paced by Amy Conteh. The Cougar senior, who also found time to sing the Star Spangled Banner before the start of the running event finals, finished second in the long jump (18-2.25) and 55 dash (7.21), sixth in the 300 dash (42.13) and anchored the 800 relay team into third place to help account for 23 of Oakton's points.

Chantilly was fifth with 32 points largely as a result of the tremendous performance by Alyssa Aiken. The Chargers senior, headed to the University of Texas defending NCAA champions, had as good a day as anyone can remember in region history in establishing three meet records. After having to get through a preliminary heat and semifinal heat of both the 55 hurdles and 55 dash in the space from 11:00 a.m. to noon, Aiken came back at 1:00 p.m. to break Nikki Guinn of Jefferson's meet record in the 55 hurdles of 8.06 with her best ever time of 7.98. Ten minutes later, Aiken was back in the blocks for the 55 dash and then went on to break her own meet record of 7.04 she set last year with a blazing time of 6.96. Two hours later it was time to set another record as she lowered her 1999 standard of 39.32 by almost a half second with her win by almost twenty meters over the entire field in 38.89.

Aiken, Hayfield and Jefferson did leave three of the fifteen events open to other winners with Centreville's Charlotte LaRoche establishing a meet record in the pole vault at 10-9 and the West Springfield 800 relay team of Carly Estes, Lindsey Shaddrix, Maya Witten and Cassandra Jackson raced to victory in 1:46.56 in addition to Erin Swain's win in the 3,200.

Corrections from yesterday's region results. Hayfield was incorrectly scored with 74 points instead of 84 and Jefferson with 64.5 instead of 71.5. In addition the four runners in third place in the 3,200 relay were from the Lake Braddock team and not Robinson.
