The boys got a break from the weather, and turnout was all that was expected for the next to last championship caliber competition of the indoor season for most PA athletes.

The meet was highlighted by a top DMR performance from Cardinal O'Hara, and new US#3's in the 60 meter dash, and the long jump, plus a new US# 4 in the 60 hurdles.

O'Hara's DMR simply ran their own race against the clock with Rich Anderson (3:09), Bob Brown (51.63), Pat Nash (1:55) and Sean Duffy (4:24), just missing a meet record by .04 with one of the top US times of 10:20.84. North Penn was second with 10:30.65, barely holding off a charging Dan Coval, who brought his team back from the pack with a strong mile, finishing just under 3 seconds behind North Penn.

The sprints provided much of the excitement as Mike Major of Philly's Central High, set a PR with his new US#3 6.87. Greg Wilson, O'Hara, and Josh Hannum of Strath Haven, were right there with new US#'s 10 and 11 (7:03 and 7:04 respectively).

Gerren Ryans, Central, long-jumped an NSI and new US #3 23 5 1/2. Girard College's Ronald Cook won the triple jump with an NSI 43 6.

In the hurdles, Jesse Patterson of Cheltenham, hit a new US#4 with an 8.10. Jamal Huff was second, with a new US#7 8.23.

The shot put saw another top US performance from Phoenixville's Jim Collins with a throw of 57 0 3/4. Chris McKelvy of North Penn, also had an NSI effort with a 56 1 3/4.

William Tennent's Troy Roberson cruised in the 400 with a new US #11 49.48. Terrance Day of Simon Gratz was second with his 50.48 run from a slower heat. Hendersons Omar Harris was third with an NSI performance of 50.52. Day had a slow start, but came from behind in the final 10 meters to win his heat.

Henderson's Joe Plevelich had a busy night, anchoring their 4 x 800, running the 4 x 200, and recovering from a bad start to finish 2nd in the 800. He was held off in a photo finish by Overbrook's Adrian Findlay, both timed in 1:57.9. Archbishop's Matt Cantinella was third with an NIC time of 1:58.60.

The top three finishers in the 200 all ran national caliber times. Tyrone Diggs, Glen Mills, won in 22:39. Mark Jones (PA State Football Player of the Year for AAA Champions Strath Haven), was second at 22.75. West Catholic's Jamal Huff was third in 22.80.

In the 4 x 200 relay, Curtis Smith, Bronte Mills, Bobby McCall, and Tyrone Diggs, led Glen Mills with a 1:31.34. Simon Gratz (1:31.65) and Strath Haven (1:31.94), also ran NSI times.

The Chester squad of Clifton Smith, Jamal Allen, Steve Hall, and Derrick Freeman pulled away on the final laps to finish the 4 x 400 in an NIC time of 3:28.63.

North Penn (Jim Farrow, Gerry Liebsch, Steve Craig, Dan Michael) ran by themselves to win the 4 x 800 with an NSI 8:05.66. Father Judge(8:13.84) and Cardinal O'Hara (8:15.10) were second and third, both NIC times.

Dan Coval easily won the 3000 with his 9:00.21. He followed 2nd place finisher Dave Atkiss, North Penn (9:15.58) for the first 1500 meters before taking control of the race. He had run 8:54.4 February 5th at Lehigh.

Neshaminy's Paul Hallman, now recovered from an auto accident that severely injured his left hand and wrist, won the mile from the unseeded heat with an NIC qualifer of 4:25.24. Kevin Carroll, Father Judge (4:29.50), and Eamon Brazunas, Great Valley (4:31.20), were second and third.

The boys' final PA indoor meet is next Saturday, February 26 at State College, with the state championships.
