More Pictures: Trophies for everyone - Natasha Staten's big trophy - Stacy-Ann Grant - the fight

Natasha Staten, William Penn PA sr, claimed the top spot in DyeStat Elite national rankings for the 2000 indoor season with a sharp victory over fellow Philadelphian Charlene Maddox of Simon Gratz, 25.02 to 25.18. The announcer billed it as the "battle of Philadelphia" and the two fine runners did not disappoint. They raced hard from the opening gun, and Staten in lane 2 made up the stagger on the far turn.

US#1 800 meter runner Neisha Bernard, Tilden NY sr, won her specialty in 2:15.23, one second ahead of Evelyn Dwyer, West Catholic PA.

Amandi Rhett, Moorestown NJ sr, turned in the fifth fastest time of the US indoor season with a 7.08 55 meter dash.

Claudine Evangelista, Laurel Springs NJ, claimed fourth in the national rankings in the 1500 meters with a strong 4:47.33 victory.

Tiffany Abney, Merion Mercy Academy PA, won the 400 in 57.48.

Other winners: US#7 shot putter Leslie Bruno, Nazareth PA, 39' 5.75;Amber Williams, Roxbury NJ, 8.28 55H; Alicia Brown, Randolph NY, 5' 4.

An enthusiastic crowd of 10,000 made almost as much noise as the larger Millrose Games crowd in the same arena the night before. Loudest reaction of the day came when a fist fight broke out in the running of the Middle School 400 meter race, second section. Two girls were trading elbows down the main straightaway when the lead girl suddenly whirled and punched the other girl in the face. The two stopped running and engaged in a full fledged fist fight in the middle of the track. It took two men each to break up the fight and hold the combatants apart. Meanwhile, the third runner in the heat slowed down, but then heeded the officials' shouts to keep running and won the heat by default for fourth place overall, 9 seconds slower than the other heat winner.
