Shalane Flanagan, Marblehead MA, lived up to her favorite's role in decisive fashion in 4:54.84. Flanagan stalked Sara Gorton, Phoenix AZ, for 7 laps until moving sharply to the lead on the 11-lap oval. From there she steadily stretched her lead for a 9-second victory over fast closing Jillian Mastroianni, Sayville NY. It was the fastest girls mile of the US season, bettering Flanagan's former US leading time by 5 seconds. She is the only US girl under 5 minutes for a mile in the 2000 indoor season.
