Brent Handa
Many of us are California residents because some relative made the decision that the generally hospitable climate was far superior to that of most other areas around the country. While we may have our moments, most of us in the Golden State are lucky to generally have weather on a most days' basis that is decent. There was a winter and spring this year in the moisture department that was particularly challenging in a big way for many around the state. While running with the wet stuff coming around is not much fun, it still pales in comparison to the snow and freezing conditions faced by some, including the young man, Brent Handa, whose mom below writes out her description of the weather as it affected Brent's running for Fall River HS through late April of this year. While too much wind, heat, a bit of rain, or some other such condition gives some something to gripe about, take a minute or three to read some of the challenges faced by a distance running student from a small school in the far Northern Section as he attempts to prepare to race 3200 meters in the spring track season. Again, his mom, the school Track Coach, tells us about it, with Brent having achieved a fine 9:26.85 through early May! this was written in late April. - Doug Speck It has been a long, cold, wet winter and spring. its usually
somewhere in the high 30s for running - underarmour, gloves and hat
are the usual
gear. Since February we have only had a few days without some sort
of percipitation (rain, sleet, hail, snow). Easter morning we woke
up
to over a foot
and a half of snow! Being the only distance runner on the team, Brent
always runs alone. he doesn't have someone to push him but takes his
watch and runs against time. he usually runs 5 to 7 miles from the
high school to an area we call Pittville- a total of 10 to 14 miles.
It is actually quite beautiful - a nice country lane with pature land
and cows and a few rolling hills. If there is too much show and/or
ice and the plows haven't come yet he has to wait until we get home
and run on the treadmill. This winter there may have been a couple
times the power went out and he didn't get to even do that. he hates
it when that happens. He did play on the varsity basketball team this
winter (was named "best defensive player") and so he usually
had 2 hours of basketball practice but still tried to get in 10 miles
a day. On game nights his baskeball coach asked him not to run before
games so he was often on the treadmill at 11:00pm getting some miles
in. |
