All-State Grid-Track Team
Summary: CalHiSports.com has combined the best players from last fall
in
football with the best going right now in track and has chosen 11-man
units
for offense and defense. They’re not all running back-sprinters,
either.
We’ve got a pole-vaulting defensive back and a high-hurdling
defensive end.

2006 All-State Grid-Track Team (Offense)
WR – Jamere Holland (Taft, Woodland Hills) 6-0, 180, Sr.
The easiest pick for this squad and a candidate for State Athlete of
the Year,
Holland is the current state leader in the 100 at 10.36 seconds and
has run
21.09 in the 200. He is the reigning 100 and 200 CIF state champ and
may be
that good in football, too. Jamere was first team all-state with 55
catches
for 1,188 yards and 17 TD catches. He played corner on defense and
may just as
good doing that as well. Holland is headed to USC, where he’ll
join former
Taft grid-track standout Steve Smith.
WR – Terrence Austin (Poly, Long Beach) 6-0, 180, Sr.
One of the top kick returners you’ll ever see and a second-team
all-state
pick, Austin is the latest football-track phenom from a school that’s
had
just about one or two every year. So how versatile is Terrence? That’s
shown
most perhaps by what he does for Poly’s track team. He’s
a hurdler with a
best of 14.74 and he’s a high jumper who is currently tied for
the state
lead with a top clearance of 6-10. Austin will play football in the
fall at
UCLA.
WR – Travon Patterson (Poly, Long Beach) 5-8, 165, Sr.
Patterson is one of the state’s top sprinters with a best mark
of 10.56 and
teams with Terrence Austin and two others in the 400 relay where Poly’s
top
time of 40.83 is No. 1 in the state. Patterson also started alongside
Austin
in football and was regarded as one of the top wideout prospects in
Southern
California. With Austin, Patterson, current 400 state leader Bryshon
Nellom
and others, it looks like Poly and head coach Don Norford are the favorites
to
win the CIF state team title. Patterson will be with Jamere Holland
at USC and
not with current teammate Terrence Austin at UCLA.
OL – Darius Savage (Morse, San Diego) 6-4, 315, Sr.
He was mostly recruited as a defensive lineman for football and signed
a
letter of intent with UCLA. He played just as much on offense and is
one of
those huge kids that just stands out in a crowd. Savage’s best
event in
track is the shot put. He has gone over the 60-foot barrier many times
and has
current reported best of 60-6 ½.
OL – Joe Hawley (Esperanza, Anaheim) 6-4, 270, Sr.
On his way to UNLV to play football, Hawley was a first team all-state
performer for the Aztecs last fall. He played on both sides of the
ball and
helped Esperanza to the CIFSS Div. I championship game. In track, Hawley
is
best at the discus and has flung it out there as far as 162-10 so far
this
spring.
OL – Joe Canavan (Palm Desert) 6-3, 315, Jr.
Canavan played both ways for Palm Desert’s squad last fall that
went 13-1
and lost in the CIFSS Div. VIII final to Burroughs of Ridgecrest. He’s
made
even more of a name for himself this spring as a shot putter. Canavan
recently
went past the 60-foot barrier and has been among the state leaders
with his
best mark of 60-2 ¼.
OL – Jonathan Summers (Loyola, Los Angeles) 6-5, 315, Sr.
Besides football and track, you can add brains to Jonathan’s
resume as
he’s bound for Dartmouth of the Ivy League. Summers was an effective
starter
along the front of Loyola’s line last football season and did
a good job of
pass protecting and run blocking. He is a weight event performer for
the track
team and has a top mark of 56-2 in the shot put.
OL – Joe Witeck (Esperanza, Anaheim) 6-4, 260, Sr.
Teammate of Joe Hawley and part of an offensive line at Esperanza that
paved
the way for 5,535 yards of rushing, which is one of the top 10 reported
totals
in state history. Witeck and Hawley play for coach Bill Pendleton,
who also is
known for his work coaching the weight events in track. Witeck has
a top mark
in the shot put of 54-4.
QB – Garrett Green (Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks) 6-2, 200, Sr.
All-state first teamer in football guided the Golden Knights to a 34-game
win
streak over sophomore, junior and senior seasons. The streak ended
in the
CIFSS Div. III title game. Green scored on a 75-yard run in that game,
one of
eight rushing TDs he scored during the season. He also threw for 1,527
yards
and 14 TDs. The USC-bound Green does the hurdle events in track and
is among
the state leaders in both the 110 highs and 300 intermediates. Best
marks so
far are 14.2 and 38.6.
RB – Jahvid Best (Salesian, Richmond) 5-10, 175, Jr.
He rushed for 1,439 yards and scored 20 touchdowns last season for
a team that
won the North Coast Section Class 1A title. He averaged 10.4 yards
per carry
and could have easily had a lot more yards and many more TDs except
Salesian
threw the ball quite a bit as well. Best has been sensational on the
track
this spring. He currently ranks among the national leaders in both
the 100 and
200 with top marks of 10.49 and 21.03. He also has a 10.39 wind-aided
time in
the 100.
RB – Rodney Glass (Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks) 5-10, 175, Sr.
He’s headed to Arizona State where he could play on the corner
on defense or
as a running back on offense. Glass rushed for 2,113 yards and scored
38 TDs
last season, so maybe it’s offense. He placed second behind Jamere
Holland
last June in the 100 at the CIF state meet and so far this year looks
right
there with Holland, too. Glass currently ranks among the national leaders
with
a top time of 10.38 in the 100.
2006 All-State Grid-Track Team (Defense)
DL – Will Smith (Sunnyside, Fresno) 6-2, 215, Sr.
Will played as a rush end last fall in football and was one of the
top players
in the Central Section. He’s headed to Fresno State. In track,
Smith is best
as a hurdler. He has a top wind-aided time of 14.42 in the 110 high
hurdles.
How many kids at above 200 pounds can do that? Not many. FSU may have
a gotten
a steal.
DL – Sir William McKenzie (San Leandro) 5-10, 270, Sr.
He was a terror on the interior of the defense for San Leandro’s
12-1 team
from last fall that lost to De La Salle in the North Coast Section
Class 4A
final. McKenzie also was a surprisingly quick pass rusher and run stuffer.
In
track, he’s been just a explosive in the shot put ring and has
rated as one
of the best in Northern California with a mark of 57-4.
DL – Cameron Carter (Mayfair, Lakewood) 6-4, 235, Sr.
Cameron’s big event in track in the discus and he’s been
among the state
leaders with top performance of 193-3. In football, he was an outstanding
rush
end for the Monsoons and also played some at tight end.
DL – Kyle Pollock (Arroyo Grande) 6-5, 260, Sr.
With so many big guys from Arroyo Grande who normally do so well in
the
throwing events, having one of them on this squad should be no surprise.
Pollock has current bests of 54-7 in the shot put and 179-11 in the
discus. He
started his football career for the Eagles as a quarterback, but was
moved to
defensive end and tight end for last season. He was one of the top
players in
the Central Coast/Gold Coast region.
LB – Matt Lahti (Murrieta Valley, Murrieta) 6-1, 220, Sr.
Getting in on a Lahti tackles was what this player did last fall in
football.
Lahti had 107 for the season, including 14 and 11 vs. perennial powers
Chino
and Esperanza of Anaheim. He and teammate Chad Hansen were one of the
top
linebacking duos in Southern California. In track, he’s been
among the state
leaders in the discus at 183-8.
LB – Robert Schenck (Mission Hills, San Marcos) 6-0, 215, Sr.
We first noticed this athlete at the USC Nike Camp last spring. He
was then
one of the top linebackers in the San Diego Section and signed in February
with Fresno State. This spring, Schenck is doing well in the shot put.
Top
mark so far: 56-10.
DB – Devin Mays (Lincoln, Stockton) 5-11, 165, Sr.
Before the start of the 2006 football season, Mays was strictly a track
guy
first, football second. That was due to how well he did in the sprints
at the
World Youth Championships. Mays showed on the gridiron, though, he
could be
aggressive, especially coming up to attack the run, and he was about
the most
dangerous kick returner around. Mays signed a football letter of intent
in
February with Oregon.
DB – Marshall Jones (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village) 6-2,
195, Jr.
This all-state underclass football player will join teammates Jimmy
Clausen
and Marc Tyler as heavily-recruited prospects nationally for the Class
of
2007. Jones carries a lot more muscle and weight than your average
sprinter,
but he’s been solid this spring. Top times have been 22.05 in
the 200 and
10.81 in the 100.
DB – Richard Sherman (Dominguez, Comtpon) 6-1, 175, Sr.
He was one of the top DBs in Southern California last season and helped
the
Dons go 13-1 and win the CIFSS Div. III title. Sherman, who caught
a TD pass
in the championship game against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, has signed
a
football letter of intent with Stanford. He may be a track guy for
the
Cardinal as well. He’s among the state leaders in the triple
jump with a
best of 48-7 and also has clocked 14.74 in the 110 high hurdles.
DB – Andrew Pancotti (Clovis East, Clovis) 5-10, 175, Sr.
Andrew’s big plays on both sides of the ball led Clovis East
to a win over
Midland Lee of Texas early last fall and he went on to have a terrific
season
until an injury finished it. He was still named third team all-state.
Pancotti
also pole vaults for the Bears’ track team, an event in which
overall
athleticism is important, and he began this week with a best clearance
of
15-6. Pancotti probably isn’t a threat to win a CIF state title,
but he is
on track to be on the medal stand.
DB – Adam Liranzo (St. Bonaventure, Ventura) 6-3, 200, Sr.
He was an all-CIFSS pick in football and was among the top players
for a St.
Bonnie team that ended up No. 1 in the state overall. Liranzo is a
hurdler in
track and has clocked 38.15 in the 300 intermediate event. Liranzo
will play
football next season at Nevada.
Two More Juniors To Watch
Zion Babb (Alhambra) – The 6-2, 180-pound athlete caught 54 passes
for 915
yards and 11 TDs last fall in football. On the track, he’s clocked
a best of
14.23 in the 110 high hurdles.
Martin Coleman (Edison, Huntington Beach) – The 6-5, 260-pound
tackle looked
terrific recently at the USC Nike Camp. Has best so far in discus of
157-5.
