NEW ORLEANS 3/23/02 - The Nokia Sugar Bowl Classic takes place in Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans City Park, an area of the city loaded with history and tradition.

New Orleans City Park is in the mid city historic area called the Historic New Orleans Trace. It was once the site of Allard Plantation, a swampy, oakfilled forest home to Indians that trade by dug-out canoes along the banks of Bayou St. John. The park began with a donation from philanthropist John McDonogh who donated a 100 acre tract of land to the city for a park. To some, the park has a very romantic history--a time when it was known as the place Creole gentleman conducted their "affaires d'honneur" otherwise known as dueling. The tradition of dueling was with the park from its beginnings to 1890 when dueling in the park was outlawed.

"In early Creole days more duels were fought in New Orleans than in any other American City. Creole honor was a thing of intricate delicacy to be offended by word or glance. The Dueling Oaks were a favorite setting for these "affaires d'honneur " with pistol sabor or colichemarde (a long sword)"

Today, the park is the 5th largest urban park of about 1500 acres filled with huge old oak trees, statues, fountains, historic buildings and bridges and City Park Stadium, known today as Tad Gormley Stadium. The Stadium was dedicated to the memory of "Francis “Tad” Gormley. He spent his life serving as head of the New Orleans Gymnastics Club and Amateur Athletic Union. He was also a trainer at Loyola, Tulane and LSU, an official in the city’s Prep School Athletic League, football and basketball referee and superintendent of City Park Stadium."

Tad Gormley Stadium is one of the recreational facilities in the park. It seats 25,600 and has a 400 meter polyurethane track. It's a great place to have a track meet! Now on with the meet from the sidelines.
