Los Gatos resident Matthew Petrillo has been selected to run in the 13-14 age group 1,600-meter race for the Region 2 track team, made up of athletes from California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Hawaii.

The team will compete against seven other regions from North America in Hershey, Pa., Aug. 7-10. The team will be flown to Hershey, treated to a tour of the Hershey Chocolate factory and a day at Hershey Park theme park before the Aug. 9 meet.

Petrillo will arrive in Hershey just days after he finishes competing at the Junior Olympics in Miami, where he will represent the Los Gatos Athletic Association team coached by Willie Harmatz and Roger Adams.

A former Fisher Middle School runner who will compete for Los Gatos High this fall, Petrillo is entered in the 1,500 meters, the 3,000 meters and the pentathlon at the Junior Olympics. This will be his fifth Junior Olympic competition.

FIELD HOCKEY: Bailey Richardson of Los Gatos High was selected to play on the U.S. Junior Olympic field hockey team, which is competing in Detroit through Aug. 2 at the 37th Annual AAU Junior Olympic Games.

FOOTBALL: The Campbell Wolverines PAL Football sign-ups and first practice will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Prospect High School.

Los Gatos High will host all-comer meets tonight, next Thursday and Aug. 7 and 14.

The events begin at 5 p.m. Entry fee for athletes is $4 and $2 for spectators.
