By Dick Sparrer
Alicia Follmar went for a run in the park last week.

But this was more than just a casual jog - Follmar and her Saratoga cross country teammates were competing against the other teams of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League in the Central Park Invitational in Santa Clara on Sept. 24.

And Follmar ran well enough to finish among the leaders in the annual run, coming in third in the girls varsity division, just 15 seconds behind the race winner.

Follmar covered the 2.3-mile course in 13:47 to finish third overall and lead the Falcons to a sixth-place finish in the girls team standings. Milpitas won the team title.

Rachael Foust ended up 34th in 16:29, with Paula McNally 44th in 16:53, Jackie Molzon 50th in 17:18 and Parsan Saffaie 53rd in 17:24 to round out the top five for Saratoga.

Steven Surrette was 30th in 13:17 and Jacob Osborne finished 33rd in 13:22 to lead Saratoga to a 13th-place finish in the boys varsity division.

The Saratoga boys managed to nail fifth overall in frosh-soph competition, thanks to sophomore Hari Subramaniam, who finished second in 13:17. Henry Barmeier was 18th in 13:59, with Robert Paolini 21st in 14:01 and Joe Yeh 30th in 14:18.

A week earlier, Follmar joined Fremont's Austin Sardella and Alex Burdos, Morgan Katz of Lynbrook and Stephanie Wilcox of Los Gatos as individual winners at the Saratoga Invitational.

Follmar scooted over the 2-mile course in 12:16.5 to win the girls event, with Lynbrook's Aya Wakabayashi a distant second in 12:44. But Wakabayashi's effort was good enough to lead the Vikings to a team title in the event.

Lynbrook ran up a low 20 points to win the girls championship, with Saratoga second at 58.

Francine Lee was fourth in 13:05, with Sasoon Kim fifth in 13:28, Zohreh Akhavan eighth in 13:50 and Agnieszka Goslicka ninth in 13:54 to help Lynbrook clinch the crown.
