Silicon Valley Habitat for Humanity 888 N. First Street, Suite 215 San Jose, Ca 95112 (408) 294-6464 Current work site is at the corner of Victor and Campbell Avenues in the city of Campbell. (near San Tomas Expressway, coming down San Tomas from 280, right turn on Campbell Ave, and the site will be soon on the right side after about 4-5 blocks, if coming from 280 have to exit at either Saratoga or Winchester). You park along the street, or as you go down Victor, you can make a left at the intersection and park in the church parking lot that sits behind the church on the corner next to the site. The work day is 8 to 4 (or whatever portion you can stay). Our construction supervisor Patrick Hamm will give an orientation at 8am. Habitat will provide donuts, coffee, water, and all tools and gloves. Volunteers should bring their lunch and need to wear closed-toed shoes. Need not to bring tools but may find their own tool belt helpful. All volunteers are asked to sign a waiver of liability (one time only for the current project) before working, and will also sign in in the log book (which we use to keep track of hours). We definitely emphasize safety and want to make sure everyone feels comfortable with whatever task they are assigned. Four homes are being built on the corner lot, with one home fronting on Campbell Avenue and the other 3 facing onto Victor Avenue. Roofs are done on all the houses. There is a lot of finishing work to be done inside all the houses, with some painting already started. We anticipate finishing in July or August. (when we do finish, we will have a dedication ceremony to turn over the keys to the partner families and the families can start making their mortgage payments) The homes are approximately 1400 sq ft, single story, 4 bedroom, 2 bath in a very efficient design. Silicon Valley Habitat for Humanity has previously built 19 homes in our county, 10 in Alviso, 7 in San Jose, and 2 in Campbell, so the current project represents the 20th to 23rd homes. It really is a wonderful experience to work alongside the families who will assume ownership of these homes. They have to put in 500 hours of sweat equity as their down payment. In general we work Wednesday through Sunday on the work site, 8 to 4 each day. We have retired people coming out mostly on weekdays with most groups coming out on weekends. We schedule groups so that we don't overwhelm the site. We always expect individuals to simply walk on. High school students frequently come out to the site and our supervisor Patrick Hamm can simply sign forms as needed at the end of the day. After we are done building these 4 homes in Campbell, we will restore at least one Victorian in San Jose (and possibly one or two more -- we are working on this right now with the San Jose Redevelopment Agency). We do plan on building one house in Los Gatos (this has been in development a long time). Hopefully some where in the early 2003 time frame, we will build 3 homes in the city of Santa Clara. And we have some exciting prospects also in San Jose for some good sized projects, say 6 or more homes at a time in a deal involving the city of San Jose and the housing department. Sunset has approached us to host an open house of a beautiful remodel in the WIllow Glen area of San Jose beginning July 12. The Sunset Magazine Idea House Team and their designers will have turned a 1,150 sq ft bungalow, a starter home from the 1940s, with 3 bedrooms and one bath into a stunning, 2 story home ready for public viewing in July. Habitat for Humanity will receive a significant amount of the proceeds from this open house and will need volunteers as "hosts" in various locations in the House on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from July 12 through August 18, with public viewing hours from 9am to 6pm on each day (recommended shifts of 3 hours each). see attached file. SUNSET MAGAZINE IDEA HOUSE Willow Glen District of San Jose Open House/Tours INFORMATION SUMMARY v Open House dates will be Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays: July 12th through August 18th v Volunteers are needed to work as �guides� for tours, to stand/sit in each area of home. v House will be open on Fridays from 9 am to 8 pm. v House will be open on Saturdays from 9 am to 6 pm v House will be open on Sundays from 11 am to 6 pm. v Volunteer shifts are each between 3 and 4 hours long; doing multiple shifts is possible. v Fridays, shifts are 8:30am-12pm, 11:30am-3pm, 2:30-6pm, and 5:30-8:30pm v Saturdays, shifts are 8:30am-12pm, 11:30am-3pm, 2:30-6:15pm v Sundays, shifts are 10:30am-1:30pm, 1-4pm, 3:30-6:30pm v Each shift requires 7 guides and one alternate; thus about 24 people per day required. v Specific details about the house address and parking will follow closer to event. v Tickets for house tours will be sold for $10 each. v Silicon Valley Habitat for Humanity will receive funding for our participation; so this will be a great fundraising event for our low-income housing program!
