ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Ruth Graham, Gunn

Sport: Cross-country.     Class: Junior.
Accomplishment: Graham, won the Division II CIF state cross-country race with a personal best time of 18:08 for her first state title. Graham also is the defending champion for Division II in the Central Coast Section. She ran the 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course in 17:45. Comment: ``I knew I was the underdog,'' Graham said. ``I was pretty confident that I could beat some of the people, because I beat them at the Stanford Invitational. All my training had led up to the state meet, and if I tried hard enough, I knew I would have a good chance to win.''

Volleyball: Tessa Sphar, Mitty; Jessica Gysin; St. Francis; Diane Copenhagen, St. Francis; Kate Fisher, Menlo.

Will Kraemer, Saratoga

Sport: Cross-country.    Class: Senior.
Accomplishment: Kraemer ran the 3.1-mile course at Fresno's Woodward Park in 15:57 to become the Division III State CIF champion. Kraemer ran a 15:23 to take first place at the CCS Division III race Nov. 10.
Comment: ``I thought he had a chance,'' Saratoga Coach Marshall Clark said. ``Because of his determination, I knew he had to be one of the favorites in the race. He is a tough competitor, and he is not afraid to express it. He goes after it.''
