All CCS Boys 1st Team Gr School Brett Gotcher Sr Aptos Runner of the Year Gotcher won his second consecutive Central Coast Section runner of the Year award. He finished first in the CCS finals with a time of 14:56 and third in the state championship in 15:47. A four-year varsity runner, Gotcher has committed to Stanford. "He's a solid runner and a tough kid," Coach Dan Gruber said. "I'm sure he'll do great next year." Will Kraemer Sr Saratoga Senior of the Year Kraemer, the CCS senior of the year, won the section Division II championship with a time of 15:23 and the state championship race in 15:57. Kramer was the main cog on a team that finished fifth in the state race. "Will is a great competitor nd a very determined runner," Coach Marshall Clark said. Alex Dunn So San Lorenzo Valley Sophomore of the Year Dunn, the CCS sophomore of the year, finished a fraction of a second behind Division III champion Will Kraemer with a time of 15:23. In the state meet, Dunn finished 10th, despite suffering health problems the week leading to the race. "He's a good kid; he's very focused and very coachable," Coach Rob Collins said. "I expect him to continue to improve next year." Patrick Hernandez Sr San Benito Hernandez was the Monterey Bay League champion and finished second in the CCS Division I championship race in 15:27, the fourth fastest in all divisions. "Patrick's pacing is his best asset," Coach Randy Logue said. "He has an uncanny ability to maintain the same pace throughout a race. In college, he'll be a 10,000-meter runner because his pacing is so good." Jeremy Mineau So Menlo-Atherton Mineau finished third in the CCS Division I championship race in 15:30. That time made Mineau the fastest sophomore to run at Menlo-Atherton and the third fastest in school history. "Jeremy obviously has great speed, but he's also mentally tough and has a great work ethic," Coach Eric Wilmurt said. "He's willing to do the mileage necessary to maintain the level he wants to run at." Wayne Hopp Sr Bellarmine Hopp was named to his second consecutive All-CCS team after he finished fourth in the section Division I championship race in 15:50 and returned to the state meet for a third year. Hopp excelled in a leadership role for the Bells. "He's one of the best leaders I've ever had on a team," Coach Pat McCrystle said. "He's a great communicator with his teammates. He has the ability to say what he has to say to them without coming across as heavy-handed." Jorge Murillo Sr Alisal After last year, when his fastest time was 16:07, Murillo dedicated himself to training during the summer, which helped him win the CCS Division II championship race in 15:51. "Jorge became a better runner this year. He planned his strategies with more thought, and was more competitive," Coach Gustavo Lopez said. "He was always more mature than most kids, but his workout in the summer was still impressive. Chris Ferren Sr Burlingame Ferren's time of 15:53 at the CCS Division III championships was his personal best. He was a four-year varsity runner and a three-time athlete of the year at Burlingame. Ferren wil probably will attend UC-Davis. "I think Chris will thrive in college," Coach Steve O'Brien said. "He's going to be running longer distances, and he's the kind of kid who always wants to do more. He has a great work ethic." Matt Radmilovic Sr Wilcox Radmilovic, the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division champion, finished fifth in the CCS Division I championship race in 15:55. That qualified him for his third consecutive state meet. Radmilovic has been Wilcox's top runner the past three seasons. "He's a great kid and a very hard worker," Coach Walt Van Zant said. "He's got a great cooperative attitute and is very coachable. I think he'll do well at the next level." Kyle Shackleton So Carlmont Shackleton finished second in the CCS Division II championship race, and his twin brother, Drew, finished fourth. After a good but unspectacular freshman year, Shackleton had a breakout season, improving his best time by about a minute. "Kyle is always ready for a challenge," Coach Sheri Mulroe said. Graham also won her first state meet in 18:08. "Her focus is her best asset as a runner," Coach Ernie Lee said. "Once the race starts you can see it in her eyes. She is just completely focused on the race." Melissa Grelli So Presentation Sophomore of the Year In her first year running cross-country, Grelli, the CCS sophomore of the year, surprised many by winning the Division III championship race in 17:31 and by finishing third at state in 18:44. "Melissa's attitude is flawless. She has a strong drive to win; she's really competitive and positive," Coach Chris Cozart said. "She hasn't been running cross-country that long, so she is only going to improve as a runner." Shannon Rowbury Sr Sacred Heart Cath Senior of the Year Robury, the CCS senior of the year was named to her second consecutive All-CCS team. Rowbury finished third in the CCS Division III championship race in 17:49 and fifth in the state meet in 18:50. "She has great foot speed, and she's a very smart runner, a real seasoned veteran." Michelle Gallagher Jr Sacred Heart Cath Junior of the Year After transferring from Mercy-Burlingame, Gallagher, the CCS junior of the year, quickly became one of the section's top runners. She finished second in the Division II championship race with a time of 17:41 and sixth in the state meet in 18:57. "Michelle loves to run and trains very hard at it," Coach Andy Chan said. "And in her own way she has become a leader on the team." Casey Nevitt Jr Aptos Nevitt is ranked 13th in the Western United States and is a member of the All-NorCal team. She finished second in the Central Coast Section Division I championship race to Milpitas' Jessica Baldwin, but her sixth place in the state championship was the highest among CCS girls. "Casey is as quiet and as charming a young lady as you'll ever meet," Coach Dan Gruber said. "But she is very intense, which helps her greatly in her running. She is one of the few kids who can keep things in perspective." Jessica Baldwin Jr Milpitas Baldwin won her second consecutive CCS Division I championship race in 18:00 and competed in her third state meet, where she ran an 18:55. "Jessica is a very hard worker and is an intense runner," Coach Bob Sharpe said. "She is very dedicated to the sport and puts in a lot of extra time to improve her running." McKayla Plank Fr Mitty Freshman of the Year Plank, 14, finished second in the CCS Division II championship race with a time of 18:08, the best by a freshman in the CCS since 1984. "McKayla is the most disciplined runner I've ever known," Coach Jonathan Stiles said. "She is very focused on her running and does everything I ask of her. She will only improve in the years to come." Lauren Christman Sr Harbor Christman finished fourth in the CCS Division III championship race in 18:12, and her twin sister, Lindsey, finished in 20:01. "Lauren and her sister push each other to excel, and that's why I think Lauren did so well thisn year," Coach Matt Ryan said. "Lauren also has great mechanics, and I think she'll be a great college runner. Allison Stiller Jr Leland Stiller improved dramatically from her sophomore year, shaving more than a minute off her time. She ran an 18:19 in the CCS Division II championship race, good for third place. "She's a very intense runner with a very good work ethic, and she's willing to lay it all out and not hold back," Coach Rudy Montenegro said. "I think next year she will start to take her shots at the leaders." Clara Viehwig Fr St.Ignatius Viehwig finished fifth in the CCS Division III championship race with a time of 18:23 and 14th in the state meet in 19:24. "She absolutely will improve as a runner, "Coach Elizabeth Gustoff said.
