Lynbrook HS - Cross Country
1971 Pre-Season
For the first time in 5 years, Lynbrook will definitely be a question mark team in the up coming cross country season. In the past Lynbrook has always been a very slow starter and then comes on strong in the big meets late in the season. This year will be no exception, as the team will be one of the youngest and most inexperienced in the league. We have only two letterman returning, senior Tom Grady and junior Tim Stewart. Add to this the second appendectomy case in the last three years to one of the top runners and it is easy to see that we'll have trouble beating many schools early season. However, on the plus side, junior Tim Stewart, will be out to improve that varsity 9th place finish in last year's league meet. Jeff Phillips, junior, who ran almost step for step with Stewart in track last year, is now recovering from an appendectomy but should be ready by the league meet. We do have some very talented young runners who may with experience run with anyone in the section. Runners in this category and hoping for a varsity spot are juniors Mike Clark, Mark Carroll, Tom Neuman and Glenn Howar, and sophmores, Tim Andrews, Craig Kennedy and Alan Waters. We have improved our varsity record each of the last five years and the big question is whether we can do this in 1971. We have a long way to go, and we'll have to wait for November's meets to find out. In the SCVAL varsity this year it should be Los Altos by a big margin, with Homestead ahead of Awalt for second. From there on will be a dogfight. Lynbrook has been fourth the last two years, but we have our work cut out if we intend to finish at least fourth again. In the Sophmores, Homestead and Lynbrook are the front runners as they went one two in the Section Frosh division last year. The big question here is simply which team will be able to keep their talented sophmores on the sophmore team without hurting the varsity team. That will decide the sophmore championships. Lynbrook has in addition to the three sophs named for possible varsity competition Dennis Early, Roger Hileman and Steve Murray who should give the Vikings six good sophmore runners. It is always difficult at this time of year to predict the frosh division, but it should be easy this year. Los Altos will win and Homestead will finally lose a freshman championship. The first meet of the season will be the Lynbrook Invitational on Sept 24th, followed by the Sunnyvale Invitational on Oct 2nd and the Carlmont Invitational meet on Oct 4th.
