Athlete Of the Week - Alicia Follmar, Saratoga


Sport: Track and field. Class: Junior.

Accomplishment: Follmar, the defending state champion in the 1,600 and last season's Mercury News track athlete of the year, won both the 800 and 1,600 at the Hampton-Phillips Classic. Follmar's times of 4:52.57 in the 1,600 was the best in the state this year. Her time of 2:12.10 in the 800 was the second best in the state this year.

Jacquelynn Molzon - Cool kids

Saratoga High School, Saratoga


Age: 18

Grade: Senior

Personal: Lives in Saratoga with mom, dad, twin sister, a dog and a cat; has one older sister in college.

Accomplishments: She has been a member of her school's varsity track and cross-country teams for four years, and has been captain for two years. ``With every race, I realize it is not the race time that matters, but trying my hardest and supporting the team,'' she said. ``Some of my teammates call me `Momma Jackie,' since I often take care of them and share my own experience.'' She is an AP scholar and has won awards in speech, including the Degree of Merit, Degree of Honor and Degree of Excellence in the National Forensic League. She has written more than 40 poems and sonnets, and two of her poems are to be published in anthologies. She has participated in student government since her freshman year, and has served on committees involved with drunken-driving prevention and volunteer and health fairs. She has been in the Girl Scouts for 13 years. For spring break, she went with her church group to help build houses in Mexico.

Favorite subject: Biology. ``The subject comes naturally to me, and I just always wanted to find out why things were the way that they were.''

Favorite movie: ``The Pianist''

Fashion favorite: Flip-flops

What's next: She will attend college in the fall and plans a double major in biology and sociology.
