Fall Reports for Fall Sports

No major news on any reports except for football. All athletic directors did an excellent job of supply information about placements and all league selections in the sports that were competed this past fall season.

Football Topics

Religious Scheduling

Games cannot be changed because of religious reasons.

Chuck brought to the table the fact that when we make a schedule change for one religious group you need to do it for all and legally you cant make the reason for a change.

Tony also addressed the issue that legally a school would be in hot water for making that the stated reason for a schedule change.

Wilcox Incident

Tony brought up the point of creating a by law in which the league votes to move a team into the playoffs when a team is faced with the situation similar to what we had with Wilcox. "We should not let kids beat us." This was reference to Wilcox having to forfeit football games because it was discovered that a student acting on his own had forged a grade change and turned it in. Wilcox would have easily made the playoffs if it wasnt for the act of this student and because of the forfeits they had to endure they were not able to advance. Wilcox followed all the correct procedures but was still left out because of what a student did on his own.

Chuck mentioned at Milpitas how students are not allowed to touch a grade report form.

Chuck supported flexibility in situations like what happened with Wilcox, but did bring up that there had to be limits of what could be appealed.

Brad and Tom brought up the point that if a team did get into the playoffs on an appeal it could bump another team that felt they were deserving of getting into the playoffs.

Any by law change that would have addressed the Wilcox situation would have to apply to all sports.

Kevin, Tab and Tom are going to look into creating a by-law to for all sports

Scheduling Conflicts

Kevin asked for completed schedules at the April 7 meeting. He brought up the point about home/home conflicts with Los Gatos/Saratoga in which both schools share the same field and would both like to play games on the same Friday night since they were both scheduled at home on the same weekend.

Tony said the two schools should take turns where one school plays Friday the other plays Saturday. The next time it occurs they reverse it.

Tony said in all scheduling conflicts the home site has priority.

CCS Reports

Proposals for the next CCS Board of Managers Meeting

Jeff Lamb reporting

Wrestling-There is a proposal to have 32 entries in Central Coast Section Tournament rather than 29 for this year. This would be done to allow all leagues to have at least 2 wrestlers in the tournament. Next year the number will go back to 29 and the number of entries for each league will be determined by the results of this year. This year the SCVAL has 5 entries, it is probable under this plan that the SCVAL would go to 4 for next year.

Golf-Boys will go back to 5 out of 6 scoring instead of 4 out of 6. There is also a proposal to allow all individuals of qualifying teams who score within 10 strokes of the top score to compete in the CCS Individual Tournament.

Official Start of Summer-A proposal to make the third Saturday of June as the official start of summer. After this date teams would be allowed to participate in camps and not have it count as a second season of sport.

Registering of Athletes-A form needs to be submitted to the league office with all the members of each team.

Lacrosse-There is now a league for lacrosse, the Peninsula Athletic League. Gunn High School is the only school in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League involved in lacrosse.

Commissioner Report

Tony Nunes reporting

Tony brought up four points

  1. Reduction of playoffs Tony would like fewer teams in playoffs.
  2. Summer Football Schools need to scrutinize.
  3. Paperwork gotta do it.
  4. SCVAL Expansion

Playoffs-It is Tonys desire to see the number of playoff teams reduced. The playoffs have become too large and go on for too long.

Summer Football-Many schools are involved in camp in which they take their entire football team to a summer camp. Tony brought up the fact that the school could be held liable if something happens to an athlete at the camp since the students are using school issued equipment.

Paperwork-It is critical that we all fill out all necessary paperwork so we can avoid as much as possible issues that might arise in which we would have to forfeit contests because a team used an athlete who wasnt eligible.

SCVAL Expansion-There has some interest expressed by Jim Russell, principal of Del Mar High School, for the Campbell Union School District to join the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League for 2005-2006. This would include the following high schools.

Del Mar

Prospect

Leigh

Westmont

Branham

Benefits of this would be more equitable distribution of competition.

The schools wanting to join are geographically desirable for most schools.

Kevin recommend for Tony to continue conversations with Jim Russell about this.
