Next up was Saturday's Central Coast Section track and field trials at San Jose City College, where she'd probably have to run close to her PR to beat a field of 16 runners in her heat.

But once again Follmar managed to win her heat without breaking the five-minute barrier. Though she ran closely with Presentation's Melissa Grelli, who only finished two seconds behind, Follmar considered her 5:00.02 time mediocre.

"I didn't really get any confidence from this race because I didn't have a good time," said Follmar. "I didn't have anyone to run with and push me."

Follmar also ran the anchor leg for Saratoga's 4x400 meter relay, in which she had plenty of competition to push her. Though her team's time of 4:08.32 did not earn them a spot in the top eight finishers, Follmar ran a blistering 400-meter split of 58.2 to finish her afternoon.

Saratoga's Williams Allehouse won his 400-meter heat in 50.40 to also advance.


Lynbrook

Sometimes it takes a bad performance to appreciate a good one. And the Lynbrook sprinters found that out the hard way at Saturday's CCS trials at San Jose City College after Garrick Wong's false start in the 4x100 meter relay to disqualify his team, which held the second-fastest time in CCS.

But the Vikings' fortunes quickly turned around. Soon the image of Wong clutching his head in disbelief was replaced by his smiles after his performance in the 100-meter dash, and by his teammates high-fiving one another after running a season-best time in the 4x400 meter relay.

"In track, short memories key success," said Wong, after running 11.17 in the 100 to finish fifth and qualify for the finals.

Wong's teammates from the 4x100 meter relay rebounded by placing second in the 4x400 in 3:23.04.

"Three of the four runners that ran on the 4x100 also ran in the 4x400," said head coach Darrin Garcia. "They showed a lot of maturity to come back."

Durrell Roberts qualified for the finals in two additional events, after winning his heat in the 100-meter dash with an 11.30 and finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash in 22.14.

Julie Chen locked down sixth in 100-meter hurdles in 15.94 to also qualify.

"Individually, we did real well," said Garcia. "Aside from the false start, I am really happy."

Prospect

Last week Fermen Smith had to go to a concert, so he stopped high jumping at 5-10 once he knew he had qualified for the CCS trials. On Saturday, Smith had no place to go. So he stuck around and cleared 6-8 on his first attempt to give him the top qualifying mark for the finals and eighth-best mark in the state.

Smith became Prospect's sole qualifier after he cruised into the finals by easily clearing 6-6 to claim first before jumping 6-8 moments later.


Westmont

Robert Jennings got some redemption after finishing fourth with a throw of 159-7 on Saturday. Jennings competed in the trials at San Jose City College last year, but failed to get a mark after throwing the disc out of bounds on each attempt.

Amanda Horowitz qualified in the shot put by finishing seventh with a 37-10.25.
