Penn Relays provide late April punch to Youth lists Vena, Lavong, Sveinsson and Miller come through with big Philly performances Tenth in a Series (updated April 29, 2009) - Compiled by Mike Kennedy World Youth Championships in Italy, all athletes who think there is any chance that they might compete for spots on the U.S. team need to take certain steps immediately. One: be sure that, if you do not already have a passport begin the process of registering to compete in the U.S. Trials Nick Vena of Morristown (N.J.) and Ryan Crouser (right, photo by Robert Rosenberg ) of Barlow (Gresham, Or.) in the shot put. Vena, just a sophomore, exploded at the Penn Relays with a put of 72-2 ½ to set a class record and move into sixth on the all-time high school list. Crouser improved his personal best by more than five feet in winning at the Oregon Relays with a 65-10 ¼ effort. To put these marks in perspective, the winning mark at the last WYC was 70-2 ½ and third place was 66-1 ½ and those marks were made with the 5-kg Youth implement, which is about one-pound lighter than the 12-pound high school sphere. Chelsey Sveinsson of Greenhill (Addison, Tx.) just keeps rolling along, winning the Penn Relays mile by more than ten seconds with a nation-leading time of 4:46.85. She passed 1,500 meters in an auto-timed 4:27.63. Prior to that she ran a solo 2:09.09 for 800 meters. Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall (N.Y.) bettered the WYC and the U.S. Trials standards for the 3,000 with a 9:45.82 in finishing fourth at the Penn Relays. Megan Goethals of Rochester (Rochester Hills, Mn.) won the West Bloomfield Invitational 3,200 in 10:29.1. Mackenzie Schulz of Benet Academy (Lisle, Il.) had a nice invitational double winning the 800 in 2:11.5 and the 1,600 in 4:54.0. Pat Shellberg of Delbarton (Morristown, N.J.) was sixth in the mile at 4:16.52 while Tyler Udland of Millburn (N.J.), at 8:42.33, and David Forward of Shawnee (Medford, N.J.), at 8:45.95, were placers at 3,000 meters. At a Regional Qualifiers meet in Texas, Parker Stinson of Cedar Park was second in 4:12.85 for 1,600 meters, while out farther out west in the Jim Robinson Twilight meet, Andrew Jordan of North Medford (Or.) ran 8:46.71 for 3,000 meters. Kyle Middlebrooks of Fountain Valley (Ca.) continues to put together a solid season, winning the Orange County Championships 200 in 21.54 for the second best legal time in the Youth ranks. He also won the 100 in 10.48 with a just-over-the-allowable aiding wind of 2.3 meters per second. Also on the track, Pablo Alvarez of Belen Jesuit (Miami, Fl.) was very impressive in his State 2A district meet, running a legal 14.16 for the 110 hurdles and then coming back to run 37.26 for the high school 300 hurdles, which are three inches higher than the Youth hurdle height. Unfortunately, the following week at the 2A regionals, he fell in the 110 hurdles and did not run the 300 hurdles. Leah Nugent of Arlington (Pa.) ran 60.05 and Amber Allen of Passaic Tech (Wayne, N.J.) ran 60.33 for the second and third fastest high school times in the nation. Ashley Burris of Timberview (Arlington, Tx.) was sharp in a State 4A district meet, running 42.64 for 300 hurdles. Ashton Purvis of St. Elizabeth (Oakland, Ca.) moved up to open competition at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, where she ran a legal 11.69 for 100 meters. Alex Collatz of Stockdale (Bakersfield, Ca.) has had the discus to herself in the early season, leading the event with a Youth best of 165-7. But that was before Jessica Sharbono of West (Billings, Mt.), who won the Golden West Invitational discus in 2008, won the Billings Invitational at 152-7. And, if a couple of dual meet performances are any indication, those two should be joined by Jessica Maroszek of Seymour (Wi.) in the near future. Fawn Miller of Lakeview (Stoneboro, Pa.), who threw the javelin 167-2 last year, has taken over the national lead at 157-8. Carlton Lavong of Methacton (Norristown, Pa.) continuing to dominate the long jump, winning at Penn at 24-6 ½ and Gunnar Nixon of Guthrie (Ok.) winning the Edmond Elite high jump at 6-10 to increase the number of Youth jumpers over 6-8 to eleven. Action has really began to heat up, especially in the field events and in the distances. Leading the way are Nick Vena of Morristown (N.J.) and Ryan Crouser (right, photo by Robert Rosenberg) of Barlow (Gresham, Or.) in the shot put. Vena, just a sophomore, exploded at the Penn Relays with a put of 72-2 ½ to set a class record and move into sixth on the all-time high school list. Crouser improved his personal best by more than five feet in winning at the Oregon Relays with a 65-10 ¼ effort. To put these marks in perspective, the winning mark at the last WYC was 70-2 ½ and third place was 66-1 ½ and those marks were made with the 5-kg Youth implement, which is about one-pound lighter than the 12-pound high school sphere.
