Easy 5k wins for Emily Sisson, Solomon Haile

Haile looks for faster time, but Sisson pleased as she can be - SteveU story

Girls

Missouri jr Emily Sisson turned a expected battle of three Foot Locker finalists into a rout and finished in 16:34.36, US#11 all time.  Sisson goes to #2 on the NON all time list behind last year's winner Ashley Brasovan (16:18.91).

Sisson took the lead on lap 2.  She was challenged briefly on lap 6 by Shelby Greany NY, but responded with a big surge that killed off all opposition and won as she pleased.  Next were 2. Lindsay Flanagan IL 17:01.21, 3. Chelsea Ley NJ 17:07.92, 4. Gabrielle Anzalone 17:27.08, and 5. Shelby Greany NY 17:34.69.

Boys

Solomon Haile MD repeats in 14:32.36, breaking his own meet record set last year.  Zach Ornelas TX hung with Haile most of the way until slipping back in the last 2 laps and finishing second in 14:50.19.

Haile looks for faster time, but Sisson pleased as can be

Thursday night’s 5000 meter race to kick off the Nike Outdoor Nationals was certainly not what Shelby Greany was looking for.  And, despite the fact that he won, it wasn’t exactly what Solomon Haile wanted, either.  But for Emily Sisson, it was just right.

Sisson and Haile won the 12-1/2 lap races, which for the fourth year launched the championship weekend.  Haile actually set a meet record (and US#1) of 14:32.37, beating the 14:38.23 that he ran to win last year, which in turn had tied Adam Vess’s 2007 mark.  Sisson’s US#1 16:34.36 was the 2nd best in meet history, and #11 all-time, trailing only Ashley Brasovan’s 16:18.91 from 2008.  Both won decisively, but that’s where the similarities ended.

Haile hoped for more, which was understandable, given that he had run 14:22 indoors to set a short-lived USR.  “I hoped to go under 14:10,” he said.  “I wanted to run 67-68 pace.  But it was too hot for me out there.”  The Sherwood MD senior was on pace early, but slipped to 72s for three laps before closing in 70.1-65.6.  Good enough for his fourth indoor or outdoor track title at 5000 meters, including NSIC, NIN, and NON.  He finished 19 seconds ahead of Vista Ridge TX sr Zach Ornelas (14:50.19).

Sisson, on the other hand, was obviously delighted, maybe even a little bewildered that things had gone so swimmingly well.  The Parkway Central MO junior rushed out a little too fast early, only to get reeled in by Greany, the Suffern NY senior.  Instead of allowing Greany to take control of the race, however, Sisson responded with a big move on the 7th lap and quickly put the field away.  She would win by more than 26 seconds over Lindsay Flanagan IL (17:01.21).  “I just felt good and decided to make a surge,” she said, simply.

The opening night of NON began with “Fastest Kid in Greensboro” prelims, then the 5000s started with the first section of the girls race, won by Standish ME frosh Emily Durgin in 18:20.79.  Then the fast section of the girls 5000 – the best 5000 field any of the Nike indoor or outdoor races has had – lined up with loads of credentials.  Sisson, Greany, and Kingsway NJ junior Chelsea Ley had combined for nine Foot Locker Finals appearances and all had finished in the top 10 there one year or another.  Flanagan also brought in great creds that included a 5th at NXN Finals last fall and a 4th in the NIN 2M in March.

Greany had recently set the USR for 2K steeple at 6:33.7, but decided to pass on that event to attend her school’s prom Friday.  That left the 5k as a viable option.  Ley and Sisson both came in with some good 5k track experience, with Ley having won the past two NSIC 5000s, and Sisson finishing 1st and 4th in the past two USATF Junior 5000s outdoors.

Sisson let herself get out a little quick (75-77), at first following the pace of fast-starting Grand Blanc MI soph Gaby Anzalone, then taking over herself.  She settled into 80s, with Flanagan, Ley, and a few others chasing, but it was Greany – starting in 6th and steadily picking off runners by the 4th lap – who was on the move.  Sisson led through 3:52 and 5:12 (1600), then Greany caught her by 2k (6:31).

But then an interesting thing happened.  After the pair settled in and let the pace slip to 83 (7:54), Sisson suddenly took off as if she was doing a fartlek run and it was her turn to hammer.  She did that lap in 78-high and Greany could not respond.  Sisson continued in 80 (10:33 3200) and 81, while Greany slipped further and further back, eventually to be passed by Flanagan, Ley (17:07.92), and Anzalone (17:27.08) before finishing 5th (17:34.69).  Sisson was eventually back with a few 83 second laps herself, but finished in 74.

The winner revealed that she had struggled with a form of Graves Disease this past winter, seriously curtailing her training and forcing her to take a lot of rest, as well as medication.  It’s the same ailment former Olympic champion Gail Devers struggled with.  By the Kansas Relays, though, where she doubled the 3200 and 1600, she was starting to feel like her old self.  “It’s been a rough year.  I was tired all the time and I had to get back into it a lot more slowly.  But I’m feeling pretty good now.

“These girls were great competition and I’m just really thankful.”

As for Greany, she’s been feeling pretty good since November, when she took second at Foot Locker Northeast and began the best stretch of running in her six years running for Suffern.  But after the “emotional roller coaster” of the weekend of her final state meet, another great showing Thursday just wasn’t in the cards.

“I felt great in the beginning, working my way up there slowly,” she said.  “I wasn’t going to fly out in the beginning and kill myself.

“But then she made a move; I knew it was going to happen, but I didn’t have anything in my legs (to respond).  I always say I have one bad race in a season, but I thought until tonight that I actually might get through this season without that.  Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a better season.”

The boys race was a little more straight forward, with Haile pulling into the lead after a couple laps, sticking close to his hoped-for pace, passing 1600 in 4:34.  Ornelas followed as near as he dared, trying to stay in it without completely redlining.

The Texan fell 40-50 meters back, but then the margin didn’t grow any more.  Haile passed 3200 in 9:16 and as he fell into a series of 72s, Ornelas even started to inch closer.  But a 9:20 3200 split is pretty tough for a guy with a 9:12 PR.  He started to slip into 73s and, when it was time to kick, he had nothing, with Haile gaining half his margin on the final go-round.

“I felt good for two miles,” a dazed Ornelas said afterward, “then it was like, ‘Whoa!’  I felt so bad, it felt good!”  He was also 2nd behind Haile here last year, as well as at the NSIC 5k this March, and had never hung so close to the Ethiopian for so long.

“It was a good time, a PR,” said Haile, who did not sound convincing.  “But I ran 14:22 indoors; I’m supposed to run under 14:20 outdoors.”

Haile’s 14:22.88 USR at NSIC came on the heels of his dominant fall XC season, which ended with his victory at Foot Locker Finals.  Outdoor, though, has been a different story, as he has fought allergies that led a 3k loss at the Penn Relays and a slow progression.  He said he probably should have taken more of a break.  “I just kept on training, and it would take me longer and longer to recover.”

But the Arkansas signee said going through what he has all year, including the eligibility questions that made national headlines in the late fall, gave him character and made him stronger – and now he’s ready to move past high school to college running.  “I’m really excited to try and push it at a higher level.  Now I’ll be a freshman again.”

Third place went to Leon FL jr Matt Mizereck, who worked his way up there by the final mile and closed hard on Ornelas the last lap for 14:53.73.

The first section of the boys 5k went to Overland CO jr Roblet Muhudin in 15:18.38.
