| Carolina boys prevail in slugfest

Track Eastern Carolina (New Bern, N.C.) and Chaminade High School (Mineola, N.Y.) slugged it out over the final 400 meters before the Carolinians claimed victory.
The Carolina crew, consisting of Andrew Hendrix, Ronald Barnes, Rodney Stewart and Anthony Hendrix, pulled ahead on the first leg and stayed there most of the way.
Edison High School (Alexandria, Va.) took the lead on the third leg and was ahead with about 400 meters to go when Anthony Hendrix and Michael Schieck, Chaminade's anchor, made their moves. Hendrix took command, followed closely by Schieck, who had been in third place.
The two began to leave the rest of the field behind, and Hendrix brought the stick home first in 7:58.18. Chaminade's time was 7:58.75, with Edison third in 8:00.74.
| Alabama girls' double is a fast one

After taking the distance medley crown on Saturday, the
Mountain Brook, Alabama girls went for double gold in the 16-lapper.
And they did a lot better than just win – their 9:04.80 set an
all-time NIN record (erasing the Boys and Girls/Brooklyn, NY
2001 9:11.82) and was 11th fastest in U.S. scholastic history.
The Alabamans did it with Marie DeMedecis (2:15.8), Lucy
Newton (2:19), Madeline Morgan (2:17) and Catherine
Diethelm (2:11.3.)
“The distance medley Saturday, we were just hoping to finish
top three,” said Mountain Brook coach Michael McGovern.
“We were hoping to do well in the 4x8, too, but we knew
everything would have to work out for us. In a field this
strong, you never know.”
Irish Road Track Club/Conestoga High of Berwyn, Pa. was a
distant second in 9:12.08 with the Spirit of Pre quartet/Saline,
Michigan third at 9:20.15.
