Summer running camps provide high school athletes with great opportunities, including the chance to improve their fitness, mentally prepare for another season and form friendships that will last a lifetime. DyeStat has compiled some 2008 camp experiences from around the country.
| Summer Camp Experiences | The most challenging run of the week...
The most challenging run this week was on the first full day. I was still adjusting to the altitude. This was a 9-mile run/hike. Melody Fairchild Running Camp Megan, Chippewa Falls WI
Tall trees! It was the most distance and I wanted to push myself. Humboldt State University Running Camp Allie, Bayside CA
5k Uphill!!! When I am at Steens I work so hard at the beginning of the week and never have anything left for the 5k. Which really stinks but I learn from that experience and its all good. Steens Mountain Running Camp Jordan, Boise ID
Bob Jone’s Bike Trail was really hard. Cal Poly Distance Camp Taylor Lawson & Alice Baker, Berkeley CA
An 8 mile run at 6:10 pace followed by 6x hill repeats. Nike Five-Star Cross Country Camp Matt, Tappan NY
For me the most challenging run by far was the big day. It challenged me right from the beginning with a 3 mile run where I was required to where a small day back. My “small” back was actually a huge bulky backpack that make my shoulders fall off. That was followed by a 30 minute hike and then 8 miles of 60-60s (60 seconds run, 60 seconds walk). I was positioned at the back of the fast group on a single track trail. About 6 miles into the run the 60-60s were now more like 90-30s. I had to swallow my pride and catch my breath on the side of the trail, waiting for the next group to come. When I finished and hiked out of the canyon, I knew the buses there were just a teaser because I had to run 7 miles back to camp. I finished decently, until the last mile. This was my first experience of “bonking”. I was running with five other campers, but during the last mile they gapped me by nearly 5 minutes and as I stumbled in one step at a time I was regretting ever signing up for this bootcamp. When it was over, I looked back and saw that I had accomplished something very worthy. Steens Mountain Running Camp Trevor, Kodiak AK
The most challenging run of the week was the run at Patrick’s Point, because we tempoed it. Humboldt State University Running Camp Rosie, Pleasant Hill CA
400 Intervals. Nike Five-Star Cross Country Camp Emma, Wurtsboro WY
Describe the most challenging run of the week. Cross Canyon. We had to keep our teammates motivated while trying to find a trail. Steens Mountain Running Camp Seth Platsman,Bend OR
The most challenging run was the 10 mile run on Thursday morning. Briarwood Running Camp Katrina, Basking Ridge NJ
The Hill Circuit Workout. Santa Barbara Cross Country and Track & Field Camp Geoff, Reno NV
The hills with Kevin for an hour behind the campus. It’s very steep, but beautiful and fulfilling at the same time. Humboldt State University Running Camp Sara, Concord CA |
