SteveU's DyeStat  Boys XC Top 25
2008 Individual XC Rankings
By Steve Underwood

The annual DyeStat XC Top 25 series (formerly Foot Locker Favorites and renamed given additional options available now) are national and regional rankings of cross-country runners based on distance-running accomplishments to date, with an emphasis on XC and 3200/2M track results, rather than a projection of how the Foot Locker Finals or NXN Finals will turn out (predictions run later in the season). Early season rankings have significant basis in top returnees from last fall and those who made significant progress as distance runners in track.  As the season progresses, this season's XC results weigh continually heavier.

November 20, 2008 (rank through meets of Nov. 15)

Super soph reality check

10th-graders suffer tough losses while their conquerors move up
  • It was a tough weekend for three of the sophomores who have been making headlines all fall.  Craig Lutz TX, Zach Wills OH, and Joe Rosa NJ, had all been unbeaten before last weekend.  Saturday, Lutz was 3rd in the TX 5A state meet, while Wills was 8th in the NXN Midwest battle.  Sunday, Rosa was also 3rd in the NJ Group 3 meet race.  Of course, the competition was hardly weak in any of those races …
  • … Those 3 meets, in fact, provided big boosts to the winners.  Reed Connor TX beat Colby Lowe’s course record to win TX 5A in windy and dusty conditions, while a resurgent Steve Sulkin IL lead his Kroy TC club to victory at NXN Midwest.  In NJ, Tyler Udland NJ’s Group 3 win was with the best time of the day and one of the best in Holmdel history, despite strong winds.
  • Minnesota fans trying to convince the world that Czech Republic-turned-Grand-Rapids standout Jakub Zivec was the real deal, even though state rules had relegated the non-traditional-exchange student to JV status all fall.  Zivec fans were vindicated when their man beat North Dakota star Joash Osoro for the NXN Heartland title.
  • Illini suprise - Sulkin, Jordan Herbert, Kyle Gibson and Danny Pawola understandably got the most attention before the Illinois AAA state meet, but it was Jeff Thode, best known as a miler, who beat them all at Detweiller.  Thode backed it up the next week by winning the Mideast Meet of Champs.
  • Brian Schrader AZ and Bryce Palmer NM saw their impressive state meet wins rewarded with top 20 spots.  It was a brutal few weeks as some outstanding runners saw themselves displaced in the rankings by other rising stars.  Palmer is part of a great twin combo, with runner-up Kevin, giving the Rosas of New Jersey competition for the best twins in the country.  The Valdes brothers or Schmidts of California might have something to say about it before it’s all over, too.
