30th Foot Locker
1979 to 2008

SteveU's Predictions for each region

SteveU's Annual Foot Locker Regional Predictions

  • Week 2: SteveU looks into the crystal ball for Foot Locker West
  • Week 1: How did SteveU do?  Not bad.  These predictions were published before the November 29 regionals.  Runners who are bold faced qualified for national finals in San Diego Dec. 13.  SteveU correctly predicted 21 of the 30 girls qualifiers and 17 of the 30 boys for a total of 38 out of the 60 qualifiers on November 29.    SteveU predicted 4 of the 6 winners, including all three boys.
Actual finish in parentheses for first three regions

 West Boys
1. Trevor Dunbar AK
2. Zack Torres CA
3. Bryan Shrader AZ
4. Mac Fleet CA
5. Chris Schwartz CA
6. Wyatt Landrum CA
7. Wade Meddles NV
8. Bryan Tibaduiza NV
9. Dominick Robinson WY
10. Tim Freriks AZ

Notes

  • After all that's happened this fall, it's hard to imagine anyone but Dunbar taking this
  • Torres has a long memory: He remembers Dunbar beating him in the freshman race in 2005 here
  • Shrader hasn't had a chance to face competition outside of Arizona all year; he will relish this
  • Nevada could get two boys in for the first time
  • Schwartz is the biggest X factor.  A great kid, he's capable of chasing Dunbar to the line, if he's back on form and can last all the way through.  But he was just 6th in a late fade at state D3 last week.
 West Girls
1. Jordan Hasay CA
2. Alex Dunne CA
3. Taylor Wallace OR
4. Jacque Taylor CA
5. Danielle Menlove UT
6. Jessica Tonn AZ
7. Rolonda Jumbo AZ
8. Sammy Silva CA
9. Shayla Kipp UT
10. Alyssa Andrews WA

Notes

  • Hasay, of course, is chasing her 4th straight title here
  • Dunne hopes to keep both shoes on her feet after kicking one off last week at D1 state.  That she finished within nine seconds of Hasay's time (different races, of course) was astonishing
  • Wallace was injured at the beginning of the year; the last four weeks she's come on like gangbusters and has a great chance to repeat
  • Jumbo and Andrews both eschewed their NXN qualifiers, in the SW and NW regionals, to race here
 Northeast Boys
1. Solomon Haile MD (1)
2. Tyler Udland NJ (2)
3. Omar Aden MA
4. Andrew Springer RI (4)
5. Brett Johnson NJ (8)
6. Chris Stogsdill NY
7. Phil Galebach MA (7)
8. Ahmed Ali MA
9. Graham Bazell MD
10. Jimmy Tarsname PA

Notes

  • It's hard to pick anyone but Haile here after he destroyed the course in October
  • Udland will be challenged after two really hard weeks, but should still get runner-up
  • The Massachusetts runners have been a little overlooked, but look for them to surprise and get a few spots.  Mike Moverman could be in there, too.
  • Galebach (MA All-State) and Springer (New Englands) are both coming off bad races; look for them to bounce back
  Northeast Girls
1. Emily Jones MA (1)
2. Melanie Thompson NJ (4)
3. Emily Lipari NY (9)
4. Chelsea Ley NJ (5)
5. Aisling Cuffe NY (3)
6. Shelby Greany NY (2)
7. Abbey Leonardi ME
8. Katie Kellner NJ (6)
9. Jess Cygan PA
10. Kristin Kasper MA (7)

Notes

  • Like Udland, Thompson is on a tough string of races.  Jones is better rested and more experienced in this meet.  This is the matchup we didn't get at Eastern States when they were in different races
  • Lipari hasn't had a lot of hard races this year and should be fresh enough to move up from her placing last year
  • Greany makes her 4th team - a feat few have accomplished
  • Kasper and Cygan just missed in 12th and 13th last year
 Midwest Boys
1. Jakub Zivec MN (1)
2. Joseph Manilafasha CO (2)
3. Futsum Zeinasellassie IN (4)
4. Steve Sulkin IL (10)
5. Evan Appel CO (3)
6. Derek Storkel WI
7. Jordan Herbert IL
8. Drew Shields IN (6)
9. Walter Schafer CO
10. Lukas Gemar MN

Notes

  • With two weeks rest and all the pent-up energy of a season where he had to run JV, Zivec should duplicated his NXN Heartland accomplishment
  • Manilafasha and Appel both know the name of the game is to qualify; don't look for them to lay all their cards on the line
  • Zeinasellassie is talented, though inexperienced.  Losing a shoe at state and taking second may be a motivator to show what he can really do
  • York's stars running NXN rarely run here, but Sulkin and Herbert are going for it; look for them to make it

 Midwest Girls
1. Allie McLaughlin CO (4)
2. Emily Sisson MO (2)
3. Ashlie Decker IA (6)
4. Megan Goethals MI (1)
5. Katie Flood IA
6. Becca Addison MI (5)
7. Lindsay Flanagan IL (8)
8. Clare Gallagher CO
9. Kelli Budd NE
10. Jordan Tomecek MI (9)

Notes

  • McLaughlin is very green at this level, but her talent should overcome her inexperience
  • Sisson and Flood both return from last year's top four, with Sisson getting the edge this time around
  • Decker is definitely going for the double-double and should beat everyone but the top two
  • Michigan has the depth to get 3 or 4 this year, led by record-setting D1 champ Goethals.  Addison just missed in 11th last year
  • Flanagan, an NXN qualifier, is also said to be doing the double-double

 South Boys
1. Bill Matthews TN (1)
2. CJ Brown TX (3)
3. Matt Mizereck FL
4. Thomas Porter VA (4)
5. Matt Sonnenfeldt TN (2)
6. Kyle Satterwhite VA (7)
7. Michael Wallace FL
8. Alex Ott VA (6)
9. Taylor Gilland NC
10. Ben Dejarnette VA

Notes

  • While this field has no real superstars, there are 15-20 runners very close together who will fight for the 10 spots.  This was the toughest field to pick
  • Great American champ Matthews is showing more and more he has what it takes to win a big race ... but don't look for one of the decade's great times on this course this year
  • After a few light years, Florida runners make a comeback with two spots.
  • Porter, making his third team, will lead 4 Virginians to bids, the most of any state in any FL regional

 South Girls
1. Ashley Brasovan FL (4)
2. Kathy Kroeger TN (1)
3. Chelsey Sveinsson TX (3)
4. Kayla Hale FL (7)
5. Megan Marsico VA (2)
6. Kim Spano NC (8)
7. Malia Cali LA
8. Cory McGee MS
9. Sydney Marshall GA
10. Stacey Nobles VA

Notes

  • Brasovan proved she could qualify last year; now maybe she'll prove she can win.  Expect her to run conservatively until the last moment she can make a winning move
  • This could be Hale's favorite course; she ran the race of her life here last year and should make her third team
  • Marshall mixed it up with the Collins Hill girls all year and is a good bet to take one of the final spots
  • Nobles was 2nd overall in the VA state meet races to Marsico
