Boys Highlights
  • In the only high-school age hurdles straightaway final of the day that was wind-legal, World Youth champ Wayne Davis II NC took advantage to set an IB record in the 110H at 13.74 (0.9), .09 ahead of Johnny Dutch's mark from 2 years ago. The best 110H time of the day, however, came from Terry Prentice CA, who won YM 110H in 13.50 (+2.2).
  • The So Cal Running Cougars team of (listed) Reggie Wyatt, Joey Hughes, Nevin Gutteriez, and Jeshua Anderson took down the YM 4x400 mark with a blazing 3:06.22, beating a Hallmark TC team that included Texans Danzell Fortson and Marcus Boyd (3:07.68).
  • Nathan Mathabane OR started fast and closed hard to take down the IB 1500 record in 3:54.02
  • Freshman-to-be Elias Gedyon CA dominated the YB 1500 with a stunning 4:05.25, just 0.53 off the national record.
  • Earlier, Wyatt - the World Youth 400H silver medalist - took the 400 in 46.89 to edge Dominick Roberts CO 46.96.
  • World Youth 400H champ William Wynne topped fellow Georgian Trey Charles in the 400H, 50.89-51.93
  • Casey Roche CA defended his young men's PV title, clearing a season-best and =US#4 17-02.75, just 2.25" short of his PR here from 2006
  • Golden West 100 and NON 200 champ Whitney Provost TX took the YM 100 in 10.49 (+1.0).
Girls Highlights
  • The two oldest 100H champs each had big national record/PR-level performances, but with tailwinds over the allowable. World Youth 4th-placer Jasmin Stowers SC ruled the IG hurdles in 13.68 (+2.6), while Tenaya Jones TX nipped LaToya James NC in the YW 100H, 13.32-13.38 (also +2.6)
  • Earlier, James was victorious in the YW 400H with a 58.23, while Stowers took the IG 400H in 1:01.45
  • Victoria Jordan TX completed her sprint double, winning the YW 100 and again topping NON champ Chalonda Goodman GA, 11.36-11.54 (+1.2). Jordan also anchored the Dallas Gold 4x400 to a 3:39.10 victory for her 4th individual and relay gold of the meet.
  • Danielle Menlove UT topped her older counterparts on the watch as she won the YG 1500 in 4:29.90, just 1.29 off Jordan Hasay's national record.
  • Akawkaw Ndipagbor CA blazed to a near-record 53.73 YG 400 win
  • With a team anchored by Ndipagbor, Together Elite Jrs won the 4x400 by nearly 12 seconds and scared the record with a 3:46.97 in Youth Girls
  • Soon-to-be freshman Chelsey Sweinsson TX won the IG 1500 by more than seven seconds in 4:33.88
  • Shanay Briscoe TX tied her PR and completed a HJ/Hept double with a IG high jump win in 5-11.50.
  • TX 5A champ Erica Alexander handled the YW 400 field in 53.62
  • Brienna Kennedy DE won the YW jav in 146-05, completing a JT-DT sweep

Young Men (17-18)

All Finals

100 Meters

Whitney Prevost (C.L. Athletic/Texas City, Tx.), the State 4A and Golden West Invitational champion, pulled a way from the pack at 40 meters for a very convincing 10.49 win and Junior Justin Murdock (Hummingbird/Glen Burnie, Md.) held off Keith Ingram (ACTC/Riverside, Milwaukee, Wi.) for second, 10.64 to 10.68. Junior Terrell McNeil (C.L. Athletic/Ball, Galveston, Tx.), who had qualified in 10.53, did not run.

400 Meters

Sophomore Reggie Wyatt (Southern California Running Cougars/J.W. North, Riverside, Ca.), the silver medalist in the World Youth 400-meter hurdles two weeks ago, switched to his second event for this meet. He was out very quick and dominated the race until the final straightaway when he had to hold off the late charge of Junior Dominick Roberts (M’Za/East, Denver, Co.), the State 5A champion, 46.89 to 46.96. For Roberts is was a personal best. Robert Simmons (Wings/Hightower, Sugar Land, Tx.) also finished fast to grab third in 47.28.

1,500 Meters

Charles Douglas (Mesquite, Tx.) led a large group through 800 in 2:07.5. John Coyle (Lake City, Id.) took over at 1,200, passed in 3:12.7, but was closely followed by Blake Irwin (Iowa United/Pleasant Valley, Ia.), Michael Williams (Peak Distance/Christian, Colorado Springs, Co.) and Lance Roller (Stars). With 200 meters remaining, Irwin and Williams broke away. Initially Irwin held a solid advantage but Williams, who had finished just third in the State Division 3A 1,600 at 4:31.26, closed with a rush to make it very close, 3:58.21 to 3:58.48. Roller was third in 4:00.91.


110-Meter High Hurdles

Sophomore Cameron LaCour (Track Houston/Atascocito, Humble, Tx.) broke on top but was quickly passed by Terry Prentice (Southern California Cheetahs/Diamond Ranch, Pomona, Ca.), then had to hold off the late charge of Rashad Smith (Pinole, Pinole Valley, Ca.), 13.50 to 13.68. . Earlier in the year the two had finished in the same positions at the State meet. Both runners had personal bests here but the race was run with a 2.2 meter per second, just over the allowable 2.0 for record purposes. Joshua Gist (Angelic/Thornwood, Harvey, Il.) got up for third in 13.98 as LaCour faded to fifth.

400-Meter Intermediate Hurdles

Junior William Wynne (Titans/McEachern, Powder Springs, Ga.) the World Youth (under-18) champion and record holders at 49.01 (30 inch hurdles), completed an undefeated season in the long hurdles with a convincing 50.89 win over Junior Trey Charles (First Light/Marietta, Ga.), at 51.93 and Junior Jamele Mason (Track Houston/Westfield, Houston, Tx.), at 52.22.


Pole Vault

Casey Roche (St. Francis, Mountain View, Ca.) jumped a season best of 17-2 ¾ to defeat a field that saw five vaulters clear 16-2 ¾. Roche’s effort moved him into equal No. 4 on the yearly list. Cameron Kroll (Reno, Nv.), who has a season best of 17-0, was second at 16-8 ¾. Mick Vicken (Rolling Meadows, Il.) equaled his season best of 16-2 ¾ in finishing third..


Intermediate Boys (15-16)

100 Meters

Charles Silmon (Hallmark/Waco, Tx.) took an early lead but by 70 meters Kenneth Gilstrap (Titans/Miller Grove, Lithonia, Ga.) had moved to the front where he held off the closing rush of Shaquille Tubman (Houston Heat/Hastings, Alief, Tx.), 10.594 to 10.596. Silmon was third at 10.66 and Williams Heriot (Pacesetters/Lincoln, Gahanna, Oh.) was fourth at 10.71.

400 Meters


Sophomore Jamal Miles (Arizona Rising Stars/Peoria, Az.) and Sophomore Justin Chambers (Titans/Kell, Marietta, Ga.) were the early leaders at 200. Wayne Henry (747/) moved into second coming off the final turn and closed the margin on Chambers until he edged in front in the final strides to win, 47.44 to 47.50. Dedrick Dukes (Metro-Dade) grabbed third over a fading Miles, 47.97 to 48.05.

1,500 Meters

Sophomore Nathan Mathabane (Lincoln, Portland, Or.) took the lead shortly after the start, has splits of 60.8, 2:04.0 and 3:10.5, finished with a last lap of 62 and a last 200 of 30 seconds to defeat Jonathan Phillips (Federal Way TC), 3:54.02 to 3:56.43. Mathabane’s time was a National Youth and meet record breaking Adam Perkins’ national mark of 3:56.84 set in 2000 and Nick Schneider’s meet record of 3:56.88 set in 1999.

110-Meter High Hurdles

Sophomore Wayne Davis (Hurdles First/Southeast, Raleigh, N.C.), who won the World Youth (under 18) championships over 36 inch hurdles two weeks ago, was an easy winner in 13.74 with Sophomore Chance Casey (Track Houston/Crosby, Tx.) a solid second in 14.03. Freshman Dale Morgan (L.A. Jets/Taft, Woodland Hills, Ca.) went from fourth to third in the last ten meters clocking 14.22.

400-Meter Intermediate Hurdles

Dale Morgan (L.A. Jets/Taft, Woodland Hills, Ca.) and Chance Casey (Track Houston/Crosby, Tx.) were one-two down the back straight before Casey took the lead at 200. Coming off the final turn Morgan had regained a small lead but balked at the ninth hurdle and Casey pulled away for the win, 52.22 to 53.09. Kennedy Daughtery (Speedsters TC) was third at 53.23.

High Jump

Sophomore Maurice Valentine (Oakland PAL/Castro Valley, Ca.), who has a best of 7-0 ¼, was an easy winner here at 6-8 ¾. Benjamin Jackson (Alaska) was second and Roman Romero (El Paso Wildcats) was third, both at 6-2 ¾.


Young Women (17-18)

100 Meters

Junior Victoria Jordan (Dallas Gold/Dunbar, Ft. Worth, Tx.), who missed the regular high school outdoor season, continues to show why she is one of the best sprinters in the country defeating Chalonda Goodman (New Horizon/Newman, Ga.), 11.36 to 11.54 with a legal aiding wind of 1.2 meters per second as both runners set personal bests. Jordan’s time ranks her equal No. 4 in the nation. Cherrelle Garret (ACTC/Mt. Eden, Hayward, Ca.) was third at 11.67.


400 Meters

Erica Alexander (Texas Storm/Clear Brook, Friendswood, Tx.), the State 5A champion at 53.29, was a solid winner in 53.62. Joanna Atkins (Sapphire/Stephenson, Stone Mountain, Ga.) and Ije Iheoma (United Stars/Council Rock South, Holland, Pa.) were battling for second down the final straight before Iheoma began dropping back and Tanisha Kendrick (Tucson Elite/Tucson, Az.) moved into third, 54.03 to 54.30. Iheoma was fifth at 54.56.

1,500 Meters

Emily Reese (Red Runners/Chamblee, Ga.), who has run 4:35.92 (and 4:47 for 1600) took control of the race midway through the first lap and had splits of 67.1, 2:21.5 and before winning in 4:38.31. Annie Martin (Kansas Flyers/Riley County, Riley, Ka.) and Ashley Schnell (Cornhusker Flyers/North Star, Lincoln, Nb.) were very close with one lap remaining but Martin proved to be too strong and won out, 4:40.01 to 4:42.79.

100-Meter High Hurdles

Junior Latoya James (Durham Striders/Cummings, Burlington, N.C.) was the early leader but by the seventh hurdle Tenaya Jones (North Texas/Lancaster, Tx.) had pulled even and the two battled to the tape with Jones prevailing, 13.32 to 13.38. For both runners it was a personal best but the race was aided by an over the allowable 2.6 meter per second wind. Junior Leslie Aririguzo (Maximum Output/West Bloomfield, Mi.), who pervious best had been 14.10, was third in 13.62 and Junior Briana Stewart (3M/James Logan, Union City, Ca.), who won the triple jump at 41-8 ½, was fourth in 13.82.


400-Meter Intermediate Hurdles

Kiani Profit (Pasadena Running Roses/Muir, Pasadena, Ca.) took the early lead but was joined by Ashley Starks (Lancaster Lightning/Lancaster, Tx.) as and two were one-two at 300 meters. Latoya James (Durham Striders/Southeast, Raleigh, N.C.) finished with a rush taking over the lead with 50 meters remaining and winning in 58.23. Sonni Austin (D.C. Express/Miller Grove, Lithonia, Ga.) was also a fast finisher and nipped Profit for second, 59.23 to 59.34. London Finley (Quiet Fire/St. Mary’s Academy, Inglewood, Ca.) was fourth in 59.64 as the first four all set personal best.

Javelin Throw

Brienna Kennedy (Mid-Atlantic/Caravel, Bear, De.), who won the discus earlier with a throw of 149-3, won with a throw of 146-5. Courntey Kirkwood (Othello, Wa.) was second at 139-9 and Asia Easley (Do Right TC) was third at 122-1..


Intermediate Girls (15-16)

100 Meters

Sophomore Breanna Hubbard (Running Panthers/Mundy’s Mill, Jonesboro, Ga.), was first with her whippet quick turnover, and freshman Ashley Collier (Dallas Gold/Seagraves, Tx.) was second, 11.53 to 11.74. Freshman Serene Williams (Arizona Rising Stars/Peoria, Az.) was third at 11.86.

400 Meters

Sophomore Angelica Weaver (Together Elite/Claremont, Ca.), who might have been a little upset after finishing just fourth in the 400 hurdles earlier, dominated the race from the start and won with a personal best of 54.36. Lola Adetu (Glenarden/Sidwell Friends, Bethesda, Md.) was second at 55.03 and Morganne Phillips (Magic City) was third at 55.45.

1,500 Meters

Chelsey Sweinsson (Texas Stars/Greenhill, Dallas, Tx.), who just completed the eighth grade, led wire-to-wire with splits of 67.1, 2:21.5 and 3:40.5 before finishing in 4:33.88. Shannon Porter (Flanagan Clan/Hockinson, Wa.) held off Jacqueline Evans (Los Gatos AA), also an eighth grader, 4:41.68 to 4:42.21.

100-Meter High Hurdles

Jasmin Stowers (Quickstriders/Pendleton, S.C.), who was fourth at the World Youth (under-18) championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, two weeks ago, took control of the race at the third hurdle and was never challenged, winning in 13.68. The time was a personal best but was also aided by an over the allowable (for record purposes) wind of 2.6 meters per second, Sophomore Precious Selmon (Team Misssouri/Crystal City, Mo.) was second at 14.06 and sophomore Larissa Matthews (Arizona Cheetahs/Chandler, Az.) was third at 14.11.

400-Meter Intermediate Hurdles

Freshman Miata Morlu (Charlotte Flyers/Providence Day, Charlotte, N.C.) took the early lead but was caught by Jasmin Stowers (Quickstriders/Pendleton, S.C.) coming off the final turn. Stowers won with a personal best of 61.45. Evonne Britton (Flames/Chapin, El Paso, Tx.) finished strongly to grab second in 61.89 and Danielle Hill (Texas Stars/Lancaster, Tx.) was third in 62.19.

High Jump

Shanay Briscoe (Northwest Flyers/Cypress Christian/Houston, Tx.), who earlier had won the heptathlon, was an easy winner in 5-11 ½, which equaled her seasonal best. Tara Richmond (Together Elite/Poly, Long Beach, Ca.) and Maya Pressley (City of Lauderdale/Coconut Creek, Fl.) tied for second at 5-7..
