Finals: This race featured a defending champ – Johnny Dutch (Clayton, NC) – and the newly-crowned intermediate hurdles champ – William Wynne (Kennesaw, GA), but the big story turned out to be relatively unknown sophomore Wayne Davis III (Raleigh, NC).
Dutch, the highly-touted South Carolina recruit, wasn't even around for the finish. Spencer Adams (Matthews, NC) jumped the gun, and officials charged the field with a false start. Moments later, Dutch appeared to false start. After a moment's discussion, an official walked to Lane 4 – Dutch's lane – and raised a red flag.
With Dutch out of the picture, Adams, Wynne and Davis got the best starts. Adams, running in Lane 3, appeared to have a slight lead at the tenth hurdle. But in the closing moments, Davis surged in Lane 6. Davis's time of 13.65 made him the year's fourth-best performer. Adams was second in 13.74, followed by Wynne in 13.76.
The wind reading was -0.7 meters per second.
"“I don’t feel good about winning it,"” Davis said afterwards. “"I didn'’t win it the way I wanted to win and I beat a senior who doesn’t have another chance to win it. I don’t know. I just don’'t feel right about this one. If I ran my best, I probably would feel better about it.” “I'’ve been working on hurdles for five years – since I was 10, so I’'m at the point where no one can beat me to the first hurdle. I haven'’t had someone beat me to the first hurdle all season . . . that’s big. “I need to work on my speed in the race. Getting to the hurdles is not a problem, but I have to work on finishing.”"
Heats:
Four heats, with winners and next four fastest advancing to Sunday's final.
1st heat (-1.2 mps): Junior William Wynne (Kennesaw, GA) took first in 13.77, while Booker Nunley (Garner, NC) went home after a non-qualifying second-place finish 14.19.
2nd heat (-0.4): Wayne Davis (Raleigh, NC) took over the lead by the third hurdle and finished first in 13.88. Oscar Spurlock (Dallas, TX), second in 14.26, failed to advance.
3rd heat (-0.2): Junior Spencer Adams (Matthews, NC) advanced with a first-place finish in 13.83. Charlton Rolle (Winston-Salem, NC) also advanced with a time of 13.96, along with Jarius Cooper (Palm Coast, FL), third in 14.04.
4th heat (0.0): Johnny Dutch (Clayton, NC) pulled ahead by the third hurdle and won easily in 13.64. Also advancing were Clyde Young (Cahokia, IL) in 13.93 and Artavius Kizer (East St. Louis, IL) in 14.08.
Four of the qualifiers – Dutch, Adams, Davis and Rolle – are North Carolinians and, with Wynne (Georgia) and Cooper (Florida) in the final, the only non-Southerners in the final are the two Illini, Young and Kizer.

Girls Summary by Elliott Denman
Finals -
Jacquelyn (Jackie) Coward’s 2006 NON performance left her dissatisfied. The West Side of Knoxville star finished just third in 13.62 in a race many expected her to win.
But now she’s a junior and learning to put past negatives to positive use.
Displaying great reaction time to the gun, Coward was off to a blitz start, led over the first hurdle…and nine more, to win in a decisive 13.55 seconds.
Her margin of victory – all of 27/100ths of a second – was unusually wide.
Dallas senior April Williams won the silver (13.82), nosing out Knoxviller Bianca Blair (13.88), Eagleville, Pa. all-arounder Ryann Krais (13.92) with Anderson, SC freshman luminary a close sixth (13.96.)
“The 100 hurdles is my best event, it’s the event I train for, but I was disappointed in my 400 meter hurdle race,” said Coward. “The good news was that I knew a lot of these girls had run in the 400 meters, so they were tired too. I was actually tired, so I knew I had to get over that mentally. Once I got over the final hurdle, there was nothing left to do but finish it. “

The third-placer in 2006, Knoxville’s Jacquelyn (Jackie) Coward leaves no doubts that she plans to do a lot better in 2007. The Tennessee junior totally outclassed the 18 others who turned out for the three heats with a sizzling 13.56 victory in race three.
The other heats went to multi-skilled Pennsylvanian Ryann Krais (13.80) and Texan April Williams (13.88.) It took a 14.54 to make the eight-runner Saturday final, the last spot narrowly going to New Jerseyan Racquel Vassell (14.54) over Georgian Jasmine Edgerson (14.55.)
