Nike Web Nationals – April 14 Update

By SteveU

As of April 14, the battle for USA supremacy in the Nike Web Nationals is taking place mostly in the South and Southwest for the boys and in California for the girls.  How long will it be until the balance of power begins to shift and some of the nation’s other powerhouses begin to weigh in?  And how will things change as the season begins reaching a peak in the South and SE, and as NE teams begin getting ready for Penn?

Regional battles have been simmering for awhile in the warm-weather states, while in the Midwest and NE, the weather is just clearing for another several weeks before their grand finales.

NATIONAL BOYS – Desert Vista AZ Seizes Lead

With a balance of outstanding athletes across the board, Desert Vista AZ has taken over the national lead from The Woodlands TX, 8042-8024.  Allante Battle paces the sprints for the leaders with a 10.87/49.03 100/400 combo, while Shea Kearney’s 15-07 PV is their top mark in the field.  Strong doubles in the throws and distances have been put up by Steven Figueroa.  They don’t really have a weakness and only two of their scores come from seniors.  They’ll be tough for awhile.

The Woodlands improved its score with new marks in the sprints (led by Brian Schmitt’s 10.69 100), hurdles, LJ, and SP, but they’re still 18 points short of the lead.  Alex Neff’s 9:03.00 3200 remains their top mark.

Brenham TX and Albuquerque Academy NM are waging a close battle for 2nd.  Brenham is strongest in the sprints and throws, while AA is paced by true decathlete Curtis Beach and Foot Locker Finalist Ben Johnson.

NATIONAL GIRLS – The Story Remains The Same

The story remains the same on the girls side, with Murrieta Valley CA, The Woodlands TX, and Collins Hill GA in the top three.  For Murietta Valley, it’s almost a one-girl show, as Kelsey Rubeor has the top team mark in the SP, DT, HJ, and LJ – the latter coming this past week at 17-08.25.  Her best is the 43-03 SP that borders on national class.  Taryn Pastoor, however, continues to have the best scores on the team in the 1600 and 3200.

As it tries to keep pace, The Woodlands improved this past week in 3 events – the 100 (Tolani Ayo-Vaughan 12.48), 100H (Kristen Schulz 14.39 for team-best 877) and long jump (Justine Charbonnet 18-02).

Collins Hill GA is in 3rd (7192), just ahead of Dana Hills CA (7176).  The biggest part of winning NWN, however, is updating team scores, and Collins Hill will move up if they do so, as their most recent entry is from March 14!
