Fayetteville Manlius sweeps New York titles Burnt Hills (Deluge XC) boys, Saratoga (Kinetic RC) girls 2nd
Some of strengths of the Fayetteville-Manlius NY (Manlius XC Club) program are not always obvious to the naked eye. Sometimes you have to look beyond the proverbial box score to really get a sense for the true greatness that helps define F-M. The Nike New York Regional presented that opportunity as the F-M girls and F-M boys scored a rare daily double over a strong field. And both did so at less than 100 percent. - DyeStat Metro Meet story

Fayetteville-Manlius (Manlius XC Club) pulled off a team sweep, and Otis Ubriaco, who led the Burnt Hills boys (Deluge XC) to a national qualifying spot, and Lizzie Predmore of Shenendehowa (Clifton Park TC) both used big late surges to score victories at the Nike New York Regional Championship in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
The US#1 FM girls, who will be favored to win its fourth straight NXN title next Saturday at Portland Meadows in Oregon, made it a region three-peat by outscoring rival and US #3 Saratoga Springs (Kinetic RC), 41-77. FM is now 3-0 vs Saratoga Springs this season.
Freshman Jillian Fanning led the way for FM by placing fifth in 18:44.2.
FM was so much stronger than the rest of the field that it survived an off day from one of its frontrunner, Courtney Champan (she ran sick and was sixth for her team), and held back a bit and still won with plenty to spare.
FM, which jammed its five runners in the top 12 and averaged 18:59.7, didn’t want to to kill itself with a fourtrh straight national title at stake next week.
"We came here to qualify," said FM senior Mackenzie Carter, 17th in 19:11.3. "Times weren’t that important. We just wanted to advance and prepare for nationals. It’s all about the end game next week and we did what we had to do."
Carter said her FM team is confident if can make it four straight in Portland.
"I feel we have the potential to be an even stronger team than the last three," said Carter. "But first we have to go and win next week, and we wew feel good about our chances."
The US#15 FM boys continued its remarkable run this fall, capturing the boys title despite not having the servies of 2008 NXN Regional champion Alex Hatz, who has been dogged by illness all season.
FM, second last year to Shenendehowa by eight points, outscored runner-up Burnt Hills, 63-105.
Senior Brendan Farrell led the charge for FM, placing sixth in 16:16, and FM put its five in front of the No. 2 man for Burnt Hills and had a compression of 33 seconds.
"We knew over the summer that we might not have Alex, but we also knew that we had five guys that could step it and put it together," said Farrell.
Burnt Hills received a huge race up front from Urbiaco, a junior who came from way back to pick off pre-race favorite Max Straneva of Chenango Valley (Binghampton) avenged his loss as last week’s NY State Federation Championships on this course. Urbiaco was seventh with 1,000 meters to go before mouting his thrilling comeback as he crossed in 16:03.4. Shaneva wound up third in 16:09.3.
Predmore, a sophomore whow as 10th last year, capped a comeback of her own when she broke away from twins Danielle and Brittany Winslow of Queensbury (Adirondack Runners) with about 800 to go and then reeled in Shaylyn Tuite of Pittsford-Mendon (Pittsford) with about 400 to go on here way to victory in 18:24.3, four seconds ahead of Tuite.
Brothers XC Club (CBA, NJ) 55 ,Rocks XC(Bish Hendriken, RI) 71; Bobby McShane - 17:18.5
