Familiarity Breeds Success
Saratoga NY girls, Brookwood GA boys take team titles
Brian Atkinson, Carolyn Baskir challenge records

They say familiarity breeds contempt.  But it also breeds success.  And familiarity with the Great American XC Festival’s new home certainly was a recipe for success on a warm, clear Saturday as three of the four Race of Champions individual and team winners used their previous experiences at the WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary NC for positive gain. • ***US#3/NY#2 Saratoga NY girls won their 7th Great American Race of Champions title with super runs from both their youngsters and their seniors, scoring 53 points and winning by 69 over US#13/SE#1 Blacksburg VA (122).  Following close behind in a NY-VA battle were US#18/SE#2 Midlothian VA 138, US#7/NY#3 Monroe-Woodbury NY 141, and SE#4 Hidden Valley VA 147
  • With a late final 50 kick to respond to Samantha Nadel's earlier kick, East Chapel Hill NC sr Carolyn Baskir ran within 3 seconds of the course record with a 17:14 to win the Girls ROC.  Nadel, a North Shore NY soph, was 2nd in 17:14, followed by Parkway Central MO sr Diane Robison (17:37) and Blacksburg VA sr twins Joanna (17:44) and Kathleen (17:46) Stevens
  • Taking the lead around the halfway points, Melbourne FL sr Brian Atkinson held off Maryville TN sr Clint McKelvey, 15:13-15:18, for the boys ROC title.  Bishop Hendricken RI sr Jacob Sienko was 3rd (15:20), followed by Bishop Guertin NH sr Francis Hernandez (15:23) and Eastern Alamance NC sr Jake Hurysz (15:25).
  • ***US#47/SE#1 Brookwood boys, missing two of their top six, nonetheless scored 118 and an impressive boys ROC win over NE powers US#31/NE#6 Bishop Guertin NH (149) and US#26/NE#4 Bishop Hendricken RI (150).  NY#6 North Rockland NY was 4th with 161, followed by Green Hope NC in 199.
*** - Scoring corrections on 10/4 put Bishop Guertin ahead of Bishop Hendricken by one point in boys ROC and changed point totals in both ROC races

Hel-LO, 'Toga - Hello, New YORK!
The return of the Great American XC Festival to North Carolina has had a lot to do with the return of some New York powers, most prominently the US#3 Saratoga NY girls - they won every Great American girls Race of Champions title from 2000-2005.  The girls ROC, in fact, also features Monroe-Woodbury, North Shore, and Warwick Valley - three of that state's top 7 teams, plus another traditional power.

It's back to Cary ...  December 2008 announcement
