BOYS - Is X-man's 200m USR in jeopardy? Jermaine Brown says yes.
| GIRLS - Ashton Purvis sees girls sprint records ahead too.
| By Jim Lambert
NEW YORK NY 3/14/09 – While Nick Vena’s US #4 All-Time 70-5 in the shot put and Curtis Beach’s three-peat in the pentathlon with a US #2 All-Time 4127 were the highlights of Day Two at the National Scholastic Championships, Saturday’s action also featured some sizzling sprinting and hurdling.
Jermaine Brown (left, photo by John Nepolitan) of Medgar Evers NY put on a clinic in the sprints, and said the best had yet to come.
That’s pretty scary considering that the junior ripped off a remarkable sprint double, running a US #1 21.26 in the 200 trials and a meet best 6.79 in the 60 dash semifinals on Saturday. Those are both NY state records, and he ran the 200 just 25 minutes after the 60.
A left hamstring injury that cost him his season last year when he attended Calabar in Jamaica, has forced Brown to run cautiously this season so he doesn’t aggravate it.
``I haven’t gone all out yet,’’ said Brown. ``But tomorrow (Sunday’s finals) there will be no holding back. I want to put on a show and run fast.’’
How fast?
``I want to run 20.5,’’ said Brown, who ran 21.25 as a ninth grader at Bridgeport in Jamaica. ``That’s what I am going to run.’’
If Brown does that, he’ll break the US record of 20.69 set at this meet in 2004 by Xavier Carter of Palm Bay High School in Melbourne FLA
``That’s what I’m going for.’’
Brown’s 6.79 broke the NY state record of 6.80 set in 2000 by Ken Baxter of Academy of Environment and Science, and his 21.26 bettered the NY record of 21.43 run by Jermaine Stafford of Franklin High in Rochester NY in 1994.
Although he has a shot at winning the 60 as well, Brown feels that one will be tougher to come on top in.
``It’s all about the start,’’ said Brown. ``If I get the start I got today, which was my best, then I can have a chance at it.’’
The 60 also features Rynell Parson of San Antonio TX and Jeremy Rankin of Aurora CO. Parson won his heat in 6.82 and Rankin captured his semifinal race in 6.85. Rankin came into the meet with a US #2 6.69 and Parson has a US #3 6.75.
Coincidentally, like Brown, the LSU-bound Parson and the Florida-bound Rankin are both returning this season after bad hamstring injuries suffered last year.
Parson hurt his left hamstring after he finished behind Rankin in the 60 at the Millrose Games last year and rehabbed for a year before coming back this season.
``I still don’t feel like I am all the way back yet,’’ said Parson. There is another gear that I haven’t hit yet and I hope to find it in the final. It should be a great race with the three of. I think it may take something in the 6.60’s to win.’’
60-METER HURDLES SEMIFINALS
After scorching the track with a blazing US #2 7.84 to win his semifinal heat on Saturday, Justin Crawford of Ashbrook NC said he only has one opponent in Sunday’s final. The clock.
Crawford has his eye on the Armory facility record of 7.73 set in the semifinals at this meet last year by Spencer Adams of Butler High School in Matthews NC.
All of the Armory facility records are placed on a plaque and put on the wall in a hallway just outside the main entrance to the track.
``I want to get that record,’’ said the Georgetown-bound Crawford. ``I came here to put my name on that wall. ``I want to show everyone here who Justin Crawford is.’’
Crawford’s 7.84 trials is behind only the 7.69 run by his North Carolina rival, Wayne Davis. Davis, 2-0 vs. Crawford this season, opted to run the hurdles at the Nike Nationals in Boston this weekend.
The second fastest hurdler in the final is senior Josh Evans of Irvington, who ran 7.96 in the trials and won his semifinal heat in 8.07.
But Crawford isn’t thinking about him or anyone else.
``I don’t mean any disrespect to anyone else, but I have the mentality that I am racing the clock, racing against my times to go faster,’’ said Crawford. ``I really don’t worry about who else is in the race.’’
Evans is looking forward to the challenge of trying to knock off Crawford. ``He’s the man to beat right now after his 7.84,’’ said Evans, the N.J. state champion.. ``We’ll see who is the better man in the final,’’ said Evans. `
4xMILE RELAY
Amity, a school located in Woodbridge Conn, had its choice of which distance relay to run. It was an easy choice.
``We don’t have really have a star distance runner on our team,’’ said senior Michael Bhatt. ``We rely on consistency, so we knew that our bets chance to win here was the 4xmile.’’
And thanks in large part to Bhatt, who ran a personal best 4:27.6, Amity got the title it coveted when it ran 17:48.99 to grab the gold.
Junior Ryan Laemel led off with a personal best 4:26.7 and handed to Bhatt in second place. Bhatt got the lead for good with his carry before passing off to senior Adam Trofa. Trofa opened a comfortable gap by splitting 4:29.3 and junior John Cocco finished off the victory with a 4:25.4.
``I knew that if I just stayed in the top three that our second and third guys could open it up for John on the anchor,’’ said leadoff man Laemel. ``And everyone did their job just the way we were hoping.’’
4x200-METER RELAY TRIALS
C.A. Track Club led three teams under 1:30 in the qualifying round with a meet best 1:29.72. The best of the rest heading into today’s final are Core Speed (1:29.75), West Charlotte NC (1:29.75), and Newburgh NY ( 1:30.17).
400-METER TRIALS
Chris Morales of Abington PA led a parade of seven sprinters under 49 seconds into Sunday’s final with the top time of the day of 48.54. The next best times were run by Clinton Collins of Keller TX (48.59), Daundre Barnaby of Hartford Conn (48.54), Marcus Wheaton of Chandler AZ (48.73), Robert Woods CA (48.84), James Taylor of Suffolk VA (48.87) and Sheroid Evans of Sugarland TX (48.92).

New York NY 3/14/09 -- Ashton Purvis is excited, proud and nonchalant, all at the same time, when discussing her athletic achievements.
Purvis (left, photo by John Dye), a junior at St. Elizabeth in Oakland CA, knows she is capable of running with the nation’s best, but she is just as proud and giddy to hear her name announced when she carves up the track en route to another blazing performance. It’s been that way since she began competing at the Armory as a seventh grader.
Purvis will be one of the girls’ headliners for the third and final day of the National Scholastic Indoor Championships when she takes to the track for the finals of the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash as the top seed for both events Sunday at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York.
``I love New York and I love running here,’’ Purvis said. ``It boosts my confidence a lot and the fans really know track. I think I can run faster tomorrow. I can feel it.’’
On Saturday, Purvis earned the top seed for the 200 finals when she won her preliminary heat in a US #1 time of 23.49, US #13 all-time and well ahead of this season’s previous top mark of 23.77 posted by Whitney Fountain of Pelham Prep NY two weeks ago at Easterns, which took place here at the Armory.
Fountain will get a chance to retake the No. 1 slot in the 200 because she is the second-fastest finalist, having burned a 24.07 in the prelims.
``I felt good about my race regardless of what my time was today,’’ said Purvis, the freshman (23.55) and sophomore (23.45) national record-holder in this event. ``My coach said I looked slower than what I ran, and that’s a good thing.’’
Purvis is also the top seed for the 60-meter dash after winning her semifinal heat in a US #3 7.42. Her toughest competition will come from Takeia Pinckney of Decatur GA (7.45), TaNay Chandler of Suffolk VA (7.60) and Stormy Kendrick of Gastonia NC (7.61), who rounded out the four fastest semifinalists.
Purvis is aiming for a pair of national records in both of her events. She feels that two records are within reach in the 60 dash. The junior class national record is 7.24 set in 2007 by Victoria Jordan of Fort Worth TX and the overall national record is 7.19 set by Ashley Owens of Colorado Springs CO in 2004.
In the 200, Purvis will be seeking the national junior class record of 23.26 set in 2006 by Bianca Knight of Ridgeland MS. Purvis knows she is facing the biggest NSIC Sunday of her career at the Armory, but will not allow the gravity of the situation to affect her approach.
And that is, above all else, to improve.
``I want to break the records in the 60 and the 200 but if I improve my times I won’t be unhappy,’’ Purvis said.
PENTATHLON
Saniel Atkinson was extremely pleased to see Californian Allison Reaser setting the pace for the final event of the pentathlon, the 800 meters.
Atkinson, a senior at Bishop McNamara in Forestville MD, had run only one other half-mile in her life, and that was a 2:28 last season in the pentathlon at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Landover MD.
Atkinson needed 110 points to catch pentathlon leader Lorraine Graham of Bowie MD, so she stuck close to Reaser and finished second overall and barely a second behind her Reaser 2:23.40.
It was a gutsy tactic for a jumper and quarter-miler, and it was enough to vault Atkinson past Graham and give the Georgia-bound senior the NSIC pentathlon title with 3,582 points, US #17 all-time.
Graham, a junior at Charles Hubert Flowers in Springdale MD, placed second overall with 3,346 points.
Reaser, from El Segundo CA, won the 800 in 2:22.19, and that effort catapulted her from sixth place to third place, where she finished with 3,279 points.
``I was chasing (Reaser), and if she wasn’t there I don’t know what would have happened,’’ Atkinson said. ``I was dying by the end of that 800.’’
Atkinson, headed for Georgia next fall, said she got a hint from her future coaching staff in Athens GA that covering five events may be her calling card.
``I’m turning into a pentathlete,’’ said Atkinson, who placed eighth at the Nike Nationals last winter. ``The coaches at Georgia said that’s what they want to put me in, so I thought why not go to New York and give it a try.’’
Atkinson got off to a rough start, as she began in 12th place in the standings after going 9.56 in the 60-meter hurdles. She quickly recovered, however, thanks to her best event, the high jump. She hurtled into first place, 1,687 to 1,675 over Graham, after a field-best leap of 5-8, just two inches shy of her career best.
Atkinson, whose frame is a slight 5-8, fell back to third place after the shot put. She threw 28-11, the eighth best mark of the field. At that point she had scored 2,139 points and trailed Graham (2,170) and Urina Harrell of Gardena CA (2,150) in the standings.
Despite a sub-par 17-8 long jump effort in what she considers one of her better events – her personal best is 18-4 – it was still the third best jump of the field and Atkinson got back to within striking distance of Graham, narrowing the gap to 110 points, 2,914 to 2,804.
``Winning the pentathlon makes me feel like I’m stronger than I thought,’’ Atkinson said. ``It lets me know I can do anything I want. I think I’ll try skydiving next.’’
4-MILE RELAY - Burnt Hills Ballston Lake NY repeats
For the last six months, Rachel Cyrus relied on two things, faith and rehabilitation. The junior from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake NY began suffering in September from a shopping bag full of injuries, which later culminated with a stress fracture in each lower leg. Cross-country season was wiped out save for one early-season race, and it looked as though she would not even have an indoor track campaign.
Then last week, after months of pool workouts, she clocked 5:02 in a 1,500-meter time trial. More importantly, the time trial was conducted pain-free. It was time to race.
``A lot of times I didn’t know what would happen,’’ Cyrus said. ``I had done so much cross-training and I didn’t want to let that go to waste. I trusted God would help me make it happen.’’
Rejoining her three teammates from the 2008 NSIC-winning 4-mile relay team, Cyrus led off Burnt Hills with a 5:18.3 mile leg and kicked off a second straight national title performance, winning this time in 20:23.06, US #4 all-time.
``This happened kind of fast. When I was training, this is what I was thinking about,’’ Cyrus said. ``Considering what I’ve been through and that this is my first indoor race all season, this is easily the most satisfying feeling I’ve ever had with running.’’
Last year Burnt Hills posted a meet-record 20:14.24, US #3 all-time indoors. The only team which has run faster indoors is Saratoga Springs, which ran US #1 19:59.24 in 2005, and US #2 20:08.72 in 2004.
Cyrus joined three girls who helped pull down a national title in the distance medley on Friday. Sophomore Molly Pezzulo surged from sixth place to first with 800 meters left in her leg and split 5:01.5, senior Sam Roecker followed with a 5:02.6 and senior Meghan Gregory closed with a 5:00.7.
On Friday, Gregory, Kendra Adams, Pezzulo and Roecker won the DMR in US #3 11:52.61.
Pezzulo’s move was the critical factor for Burnt Hills. Once she surged to the front, Burnt Hills was never seriously challenged for the lead.
``I heard my coach’s whistle – it’s unmistakable – and I knew it was time to go,’’ Pezzulo said. ``I was going to let everything out.’’
Roecker put the race out of reach once handed the baton.
``Before every race we pretty much know how the race will play out,’’ Roecker said. ``I knew that once I got the baton the strategy was to get a bigger lead.’’

POLE VAULT
Ariane Beaumont-Courteau, a senior from Montreal, Canada, won her first NSIC title with a vault of 13-4 ¼, a personal best by 2 ½ inches.
Beaumont-Courteau, fifth last season here, beat out the heavy American favorite for this event, US leader Morgann LeLeux of Catholic High in Louisiana, who has cleared 13-2 ½ this season. LeLeux placed second at 13-0 ¼.
Beaumont-Courteau missed her three tries at 4.10 meters or 13-5 ¼, which would have enabled her to surpass the Canadian national record of 4.08 meters, or 13-4 ½.
``I was aiming for 4.10 so I could break the Canadian national record,’’ she said. ``But I’m not disappointed because I got a personal best by six centimeters. This is my third year here and I never felt I did well here. It’s nice to finally have a good meet here.’’ Beaumont-Courteau plans on heading to Boston to compete in the Nike Indoor Nationals on Sunday.
60-METER HURDLE SEMIFINALS
A pair of freshmen from opposite ends of the country have earned the top two seeds for the 60-meter hurdle finals, slated for Sunday at 11 a.m.
Trinity Wilson of Berkeley CA, US #1 55 hurdles (7.94), will be the top seed after winning her semifinal heat in 8.65. Latiesha Philson of New York NY ran the next fastest time with an 8.66.
``I hit that fourth hurdle with my trail leg but it was a good race,’’ said Wilson, a freshman at Berkeley St. Mary’s. ``I won’t be thinking about anyone else tomorrow. I’ll just be thinking about myself and the race and the finish line. I’m going for 8.30 or 8.40.’’
Janice Jackson of Brooklyn, who entered the semifinals with a meet-best 8.58 in the preliminaries, is third with an 8.67.
``I have to go back to the drawing board,’’ said Jackson, a Clemson-bound senior from Middle College at Medgar Evers. ``I have to focus a lot more.’’
400-METER TRIALS
Leading the pack of girls’ quarter-milers is Akawkaw Ndipagbor of Long Beach Poly CA. She ran a meet-best 55.33 in the trials despite losing her left spike as she was about to complete her first 200-meter lap.
Last spring Ndipagbor ran 53.35, US #6 on the season, and placed third in 53.62 at the USATF Junior Nationals.
The next fastest preliminary time was clocked by Oakcrest NJ senior Nijgia Snapp, who was in fourth place in her heat with less than 100 meters left but turned on the jets and closed in first place in 55.76.
The girls’ 400 final is slated for 12:45 p.m.
4x200-METER TRIALS
Speed City, led by the top seed in the girls’ 400 meters, Akawkaw Ndipagbor, is the top seed for the 4x200-meter relay finals with a 1:39.55. The 12-team final begins at 2:55 p.m.
Speed City will be joined by the following qualifiers: Gardena Core Speed (1:39.72), Elizabeth Seton (1:40.30), Weaver (1:40.97), Thurgood Marshall (1:42.19), Danbury (1:42.29), Bowie (1:42.69), Bay Area (1:42.76), Kgxpress (1:42.90), Motor City (1:42.93), Maryland Jaguars (1:43.05) and Bishop Hartley (1:43.31).
