As hard as it would be to imagine for those in the frozen Midwest and Northeast, the outdoor prep track season for Texas and some other southern states is only about a month away.  But before that, Texans have a few chances to join their counterparts from around the country on the undercover circuit, with the University of Houston providing one of the best opportunities.  The Carl Lewis Invitational has served as a chance for many athletes from the Lone Star state to open their campaign, or continue it if they have already opened at LSU or Arkansas.

The star-studded fields entered in this year’s invite, named for the five-time Olympic sprinter and jumper, prove that 2009 is no exception.  The names jump out at you.  Debuting here or building on what they’ve already started this winter are athletes like Bridgetta Barrett, Wren Bonner, A’Lexus Brannon, Shanay Briscoe, Malia Cali, Ashley Collier, Omar Craddock, Logan Cunningham, Donique’ Flemings, Nia Fluker, Marquise Goodwin, Kendall Hayes, Tiffany Hines, Candace Jackson, Cameron LaCour, Chris Muncie, Demi Payne, Rynell Parson, Cetarre Rockwell, Stephen Saenz, Howard Sheppard, and Jack Whitt.  Some are established national meet contenders, others rising stars on the precipice of emerging into the spotlight.

But it likely pleases Carl Lewis, who starred here in the early 1980s, that the most accomplished athlete entered in the meet is perhaps the one most like himself.

Marquise Goodwin impresses with both his speed (10.38 100) and distance (25-04.75 LJ, plus 26-01.50w).  His windy 26-footer from the Texas state meet last spring was the first any-conditions prep 26-footer since 1992.  But his calling card, especially in his long jump specialty, is his consistency – and that he’s a winner.  Already under his belt are Nike Indoor (2008) and Outdoor (2007) titles, as well as a USATF Junior (2008) crown.  But most impressive of all was when he earned the spot atop the medal stand at the World Juniors last summer – the only US prep athlete to do so in an individual event.

More than once Goodwin has found a way to win while injured, or on his last jump.  He is the defending champ here in the LJ, and meet record-holder at 24-07.

In fact, fans would do well to keep their eyes on the field events, where some of the meet’s most outstanding talent lies.  In the girls high jump, two-thirds of the Texas trio that cleared 6-0 at the Great Southwest meet are entered.  Shanay Briscoe went on to win that meet, as well as USATF Juniors, and eventually cleared 6-01.50.  She also made the finals of the Olympic Trials.  The other GSW 6-footer, Bridgetta Barrett, is also slated to compete.  The girls long and triple jump fields are led by another Great Southwest champ, A’Lexus Brannon.  She won both the long and triple jumps there last year.  On the season, she had the top any-conditions LJ at 21-00 and has also been over 41 in the TJ.

The boys fields have no shortage of field stars, either.  From Norman OK comes pole vaulter Jack Whitt, who triumphed in that early-season measuring stick, the Reno Vault Summit, with the nation’s only 17-footer to date.  He also won at Arkansas last weekend and will be pushed again by 16-04 vaulter Logan Cunningham.  In the shot ring, Stephen Saenz is one of a record three athletes nationally who have already thrown better than 67-06 in this young season.  He is part of a tight trio that could lead the best prep season ever in the event.  And, like Goodwin, Omar Craddock is a horizontal jump defending champ and meet record-holder; his 49-05 took the gold here last year.  His best, however, is nearly 51 feet and he is also seeded 2nd behind Goodwin in the LJ.

The sprints and hurdles are always a treat here, even with an unbanked track, and in Ashley Collier, the meet has a contender for the best in the country.  Competing for Dallas Gold here, the Fort Worth Dunbar junior joined with now-graduated Victoria Jordan for the best 4x100 and 4x200 quartets in the nation last spring.  At Arkansas, she showed she’s now ready to lead in her state with US leading victories in 7.54 (60) and 24.22 (200), and she’s in both of those events here.

Donique’ Flemings’ best event is probably the 300 hurdles, where she led the US last spring.  But she’s pretty darn good at the 60H and 200, too, where she’ll compete here.  At Arkansas last weekend, she notched a US-leading 8.55 60H and she leads that field here.  Nia Fluker is also in the 200, but the 400 is one of her specialties (along with the 800) and she’ll try and make it two straight after winning at Arkansas.

The boys flat 60 features Goodwin, as well as Rynell Parson, who followed a record-setting soph campaign by suffering through an injury-plagued 2008 (though he did set a meet record here last year in 6.67).  He was 2nd last weekend in the 60 at LSU.  The 200 and 400 on the boys side look fairly wide open, though the longer race could be ruled by Chris Muncie, who went 47.30 last spring.

The distances usually aren’t as strong here, with a lot of the top harrier-types opting to wait to open their seasons, but a notable exception is Louisiana’s finest, Malia Cali.  The St. Thomas Aquinas jr is entered in both the 3200 and mile.  She set a state record in the latter last weekend at LSU in taking second to Cory McGee, while she can claim to have won a national title at 2 miles last winter at National Scholastics.

Meanwhile, Howard Shepard claims the top seed in both the 800 and mile.  Though he had a disappointing 2008, he rolled a 1:50.51 as a soph in 2007 and is trying to get back to that form.
