BOYS

Young Men

100 Meters

D’Angelo Cherry of Mt. Zion (Jonesboro, N.C./Worldwide) had a great start and, for all practical purposes, the race was over. Cherry’s winning time of 10.34, run with a legal aiding 1.0 meter per second wind, was just .01 off his personal best. By 50 meters, the rest of the race was settled. Devon Smith of Westlake (Waldorf, Md./New Wave) ran 10.50 for second, followed by Charles Silmon of Waco Tx./Hallmark) at 10.56 and Darryl Williams of White Oak (Jacksonville, N.C./Track Eastern Carolina) at 10.58.

400 Meters

Danzell Fortson of Texas/Team Xtreme took the early lead and was never challenged, winning in 46.36. Michael Berry of Seatown Express moved to second at 200 meters, but Wayne Henry of Lackey (Indian Head, Md./747 TC) and Trent Huling of Xing Xing moved into second and third off the final turn and finished in 47.58 and 47.95, respectively. Berry was fourth at 48.02.

1,500 Meters

With two laps remaining, 12 runners were still in contention for medals, led by Michael Williams  of Baylor/Peak Distance and Jonathan Darmody of South Central Athletics. Williams and Sadiki White of Allentown (Pa./Juventus) then broke away from the pack with one lap remaining, passed in 2:56.0. White then passed Williams down the back straight and went on to win in 3:57.56. Williams, who won the 5,000 and the 2,000 steeplechase, was second in 4:00.57. Darmody, at 4:03.17, Terrence Lee of Juventus, at 4:05.23, and Vermond Walker II, at 4:06.67, all held their positions in the final 400.

110-Meter High Hurdles

Booker Nunley of Garner (N.C./Track Eastern Carolina) had the best start and was clear of the field by the second hurdle and on his way to a 13.41. The USATF Junior Olympic Young Mens record is listed at 13.40, set in 1978 by Rodney Wilson (Bartrum, Philadelphia, Pa.), but that is actually a hand time. Nunley will get credit for breaking the meet record of 13.42, set by Terrance Trammell of Southwest Dekalb (Decatur, Ga.) in 1997. The race was run with a legal aiding wind of 1.4 meters per second. Nunley whose personal best is 13.40, was second in the World Junior championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Chance Casey of Crosby (Tx./Track Houston) was second in a personal best of 13.80 and Marchello Sinkfield of Douglass (Atlanta, Ga./Quicksilver) was third also with a personal best of 13.96.

400-Meter Intermediate Hurdles

Chance Casey of  Crosby (Tx./Track Houston) and Amaechi Morton of Riverwood (Atlanta, Ga./Quicksilver) were out quickest, but coming off the first turn and heading down the back straight, William Wynne of McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga./Titans) took control. Despite a slight studder at the final hurdle, he ran a nation-leading and seasonal best 49.84 for the seventh fastest high school performance of all-time. He just missed the USATF Junior Olympic Young Mens national record of 49.77, set by Kerron Clement of La Porte (Tx.) in 2002, and his own 49.70 PR from last year. There were no position changes in the last 100 meters, with Morton finishing in second at personal best 50.83, and followed by Casey at 51.44 and Marchello Sinkfield of Douglass (Atlanta, Ga./Quicksilver) at 52.60.

Pole Vault

Junior Jack Whitt of North (Norman, Ok./McMichaels) cleared 17-2 ¾ in a jump-off to win the event and move to No. 2 yearly high school list. Jeff Rodriguez of Fossil Ridge (Keller, Tx./Texas Pole Vault) and Cody Deorflein of DuQuoin (Il./Marion Swamp Fox), who were both in the jump-off, finished tied for second at 16-2 ¾, which was a personal best for both athletes. Rodriguez’s previous best was 16-1 in winning the Texas Relays and Deorflein’s best was 15-6.
