NTN Northwest Review - 9/30/06
Week ending 9/30/06 Northwest Region
by Dave Devine, Northwest NTN Regional Editor
BOYS 1. Ferris, WA
The Saxons tuned up for the big Stanford Invite with a low-key win over Gonzaga Prep in a Greater Spokane League meet, then proceeded to throw down a monster effort in California. Facing US#1 Royal, league-mates US#6 Mead, and a whos-who of other ranked teams, Ferris emerged with their most important victory to date. Scoring 84 to Royal’s 98 and Mead’s 159, the Ferris boys placed 3 in the top 15 and used their 42 second 1-5 compression to top Royal’s front-running Michael Cybulski and his team’s 50 second top-five compression. 2. Mead, WA
Like their fellow Spokaners from Ferris, Mead filled the middle of the week with a GSL meet and then traveled to Stanford University on Saturday. In the league meet they handled Mt. Spokane and Shadle Park fairly easily, and then ran a strong race at Stanford, still lacking their #1 from last year, Taylor Nepon. Third to NW#1/US#2 Ferris and CA#1/US#1 Royal, Mead turned back highly-ranked squads El Toro CA, Jesuit CA, LaSalle OH, Davis CA, Arcadia CA...and the list goes on (CA#’s 2,4,5,6,7,8,10; NW#’s 9, 10). Behind great runs from Dylan Hatcher (6th 15:18) and Kelly Lynch (7th 15:24), Mead continued to show they are a team to be reckoned with.

After a great run at the Bob Firman Invitational, Borah trained through last week in preparation for a rematch with Central Catholic (and a showdown with many others) at the Danner Meet. Up Next: Nike/Jimmer Danner Invitational, 10/7 4. Central Catholic, OR
The Rams appear to be getting everyone healthy for a push at Jim Danner. At the mid-week PIL/MHC Crossover meet, cross-town rival Lincoln took the top five spots as Central Catholic’s squad cruised to a controlled 7-8-9-11-12-13 finish, separated by a mere 4 seconds. On Saturday at the Bryant Park Challenge, the Rams came with a different line-up, running none of Wednesday’s top seven and still winning handily, 72 to Hidden Valley’s 103. Look for the full roster to toe the line at Blue Lake Park on October 7th. PIL/MHC Crossover Meet, Lents Park, OR – 9/27/06 Central Catholic Top-7 (results courtesy www.athletic.net)

After competing exclusively in-state for the first portion of the season, the boys from Flathead ventured into Washington for the flighted races of the Sunfair Invitational, and found strong challenges from the Washington teams. Newly-ranked NW#7 Central Valley won in devastating fashion, with their individuals claiming 4 of the 7 flight races. Flathead competed hard (and #1 Seth Grossman ran a great race), with only one of their individuals above 7th place in their respective races, but it wasn’t enough, as not only Central Valley, but also NW#8 Gig Harbor and unranked Tahoma WA slipped past the Braves. Central Valley, WA
The talent-rich Greater Spokane League is ridiculous this year, but CV coach James Berry has known for some time that—despite the strength of Ferris, Mead and North Central—he has a pretty solid squad himself. Now we all know. Central Valley had a stellar week, knocking off previously-ranked North Central at a GSL meet on 9/27 22-35, and then stunning the Sunfair crowd with a clutch performance over NW#6 Flathead, NW#8 Gig Harbor and a strong Tahoma team. Coach Berry reports that the team was “running without our regular #4 man, Jason Stoker, due to a minor injury, and he should be back for Danner next week. We got a fantastic performance out of our normal eighth man in the first flight, which set the tone for us, I think.” After sterling performances through 6, CV had a slight hiccup with their #1 runner, who found himself 13th in his flight and left Gig Harbor with some room for hope. When the scores were added up, however, CV had the title and their biggest win of the season so far.

Gig Harbor, WA
Gig Harbor continues to be one of the truly solid squads in the region, with a strong second place showing at the Sunfair Invite. Central Valley was merciless, taking 4 of the 7 individual flight wins, but Gig’s boys were tough and consistent, faring no worse than 6th in any of the flights. That consistency—and the reliable frontrunning of Williams and Unterreiner—allowed them to pick up a significant win over NW#6 Flathead and head into the Washington championship season with confidence.

Jesuit, OR
The Jesuit boys ran at full-strength for a mid-week 3-way meet with Sunset and Aloha, taking the top-5 with a sterling 13 second spread. Then it was on to Stanford, and a showdown with 4 of the top 6 ranked teams in the country. The tight Crusader compression spread out a bit in the huge invite field, but they still placed all 5 within 48 seconds of each other and averaged 16:12 on the fast course. Coach Tom Rothenberger was pleased with the effort, and felt his team’s 11th place finish was a step forward against some of the best teams in the nation.

Behind the stellar frontrunning of emerging superstar Max O’Donoghue-McDonald (2nd 14:48 to Davis’ Brendan Gregg 14:47, beating Royal’s Michael Cybulski in 3rd), Seattle Prep finished 12th, and one-spot behind region rival Jesuit, at the Stanford Invite. The Prep senior leader’s effort was clearly nasty, but the gap back to 5th man at 16:41 made it tough to compete with the more closely-packed squads.

1. Jesuit, OR
Even with the Stanford Invite looming on Saturday, Jesuit couldn’t afford to coast through their mid-week 3-way with Aloha and Sunset, not with Sunset being the #2 ranked girl’s team in Oregon. Both teams ran at full strength, with Jesuit getting the win off a 1-2-4-5-9-10 showing. The Crusader girls kept it to 51 seconds between their 1 and 5, and showed why they are ranked, not only first in Oregon, but in the region. At Stanford they placed that ranking on the line against the #’s 1,2,5,8 and 9 ranked teams from CA and the #7 and 9 ranked teams from the Southwest. The Cali teams showed their strength, with US#2 Corona del Mar CA winning decisively over US#7 Torrey Pines CA, 80-150, followed by CA#5 Buchanan 166 and CA#8 Davis 183. The Jesuit girls were a solid 5th, running behind Adrienne McGuirk’s 14th place finish. Senior Katie Sullivan fell twice during the race and still came in as her team’s third. In the flighted competition at the Sunfair Invite, all 7 runners count, and Gig Harbor was without their ace Saturday, which meant each girl had to move up a slot in the races. Kesslee Payne, #1 for the Tides this season, was stung by a bee last Wednesday and had a severe allergic reaction that found her on crutches in Yakima. That meant everyone else had to step up—and for the most part they did—but it wasn’t enough to stop an unranked Snohomish squad who saw the targets on Gig Harbor’s backs. Snohomish, apparently missing a runner or two themselves, took advantage of Gig’s less experienced freshmen in the first two flights to set the tone for a major upset. Under the circumstances, Tides Coach Patty Ley was pleased with her team’s performance, and felt that several of her girls had breakthroughs this weekend that should pay dividends down the road.

The Broncs stayed close to home last weekend, competing in the Billings Invitational against their season-long nemesis and cross-town rival Billings West. Once again, Billings Senior came out on the winning end, placing 5 in the top 10 and beating Billings West 26-61. After dominant frontrunner Bridgette Hoenke, who gapped the field by 23 seconds, the girls from Senior packed it in with a 35 second 2-5 compression.

Anchorage West, AK 5. West Valley, AK 6. Juneau-Douglas, AK Talk about stepping up and answering the lingering questions. Ranked NW#2 early in the year, West Valley AK was stripped of that designation after a tough mid-season race at the Adidas/Lynx Invite in Anchorage left them third to two other Alaska teams. Their #1 runner Crystal Pitney had to drop out of that race, and even then it was close, but still...questions remained. Was this West Valley team as good as the one invited to NTN last year? Were they even the best squad in Alaska? Consider the questions answered.
West Valley dominated the Alaska State meet, along with NW#4 Anchorage West and NW#6 Juneau-Douglas, en route to their 3rd straight state title. Taking a cue from their team’s mascot—the Wolfpack—West Valley placed all five scorers in the top nine, separated by a paper-thin 22 seconds. According to reports, they sat back through the early kilometers and then maintained a daunting pace that few others could hold. “They ran a perfect race at the start,” West Valley coach Doug Herron told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, “almost exactly the pace that they finished.”
"We knew it would be close," Anchorage West head coach Joe Alward, commented to the Anchorage Daily News, "We did well, but we didn't have a great day. West Valley had a great day and put the hammer down on all of us." The race for second showed just how closely matched West Anchorage and Juneau-Douglas were; they were tied at 54 after five runners, but West won the tiebreaker as its sixth runner, sophomore Josie Roberts (20:27), finished 22nd to beat Juneau's sixth, Brittany Lehnhard (21:21), who placed 47th. Juneau-Douglas’ freshman phenom Leah Francis, won the meet in 18:39.2, capping off an undefeated season and marking her as one-to-watch for the future.
