4A Girls 3k

A close race this was not. Taylor Wallace (Henley jr) took the lead from the start, Mikayla Bradbury (Molala sr) tagged along for the first four laps. Wallace appreciated the early push from Bradbury but said of her attempt at the 9:50.58 state record, “I just need someone to push me.” When asked future plans, the goal of breaking 9:50 instantly resurfaced. Taylor’s 9:58.30 was the fastest 3k of the day. Wallace and Bradbury will face off again in Saturday's 1500m run. Photo by Dave Clark at right.

5A Girls 3k
Two races in one, double vision, even déjà vu as four girls split in pairs, Michelly Foley (Crook County sr) - Kayleigh Tyerman (Crater jr) and Kellie Foley (Crook County fr) - Emily Olsen (Crater sr), took the spotlight. The gap between the pairs started to grow at the 2k, the Foley sisters eventually winning their respective battles. Results look familiar? Foley and Tyerman also went 1-2 at the 2007 State XC Meet. Congrats to Michelly on adding another state championship on the day before her 18th birthday!

6A Girls 3k
The 3k was a good start for Jesuit Crusaders in their quest for a team title. The field remained in a tight pack until just before the1600m when Jesuit’s Adrienne McGuirk (sr) and Sarah Bridges (so) put some distance on the field. These girls had talked about finishing as the top two, the plan to learn from their too-fast start at the Oregon Relays by staying around 80 seconds a lap. McGuirk will double back in Saturday’s 1500m race, more confident after her 3k victory (10:00.69). Bridges’ focus on soccer will keep her busy until next track season.

4A Boys 3k
From the gun, Elliot Jantzer (Phoenix jr) “had to set the pace” to create the race he wanted. “I didn’t want a pack,”explained Jantzer, "I didn't want anyone to leech off me." Spenser Lynass (North Bend sr) refused to hand over the victory so nicely, but with two laps to go Jantzer had a five second lead. He more than doubled that lead to finish in a winniing 8:40.47. Jantzer returned less than two hours later to help the Phoenix 4x400 relay advance to finals. He hopes to use the 1500m to show that four flat is not the best he can do. When asked about post season competition plans, Jantzer shared, “I want to see what I can do against the rest of the nation.” Photo by Dave Clark to left.

5A Boys 3k
Matt Miner (Ashland sr) claims he had no focus for the first third of the race. After the first 1k he gained focus and started to see his competition, he saw Jared Bassett (Marshfield sr). Bassett fought to the line , but Miner’s kick prevailed. Miner felt pretty confident in his ability to push at the end of the race. “I have really just worked on my speed and worked on my finishing kick so when it really comes down to it, I have a lot of juice left.” Miner is looking forward to a “rematch” against Bassett and Drummond in the 1500m run where he will try to defend his 1500m title earned at the Grant’s Pass Rotary Meet. Miner wouldn’t share his race strategy for the 1500m, just that it will include “using that speed.”

6A Boys 3k
The pack went out and stayed together through the 2k. Bryce Burgess (Franklin sr) and Brian Manning (Jesuit) broke away from the rest, but it was Dave Marks (Lakeridge sr) that gave Burgess a run for his repeat 3k win. With 300m to go, Marks was on his shoulder. At 150m to go, the two ran neck and neck. Just before the last straight away, Burgess worked the corner forcing Marks out near lane two. The strategy in those last 200m was to "make it as frustrating as possible for him." Looking strong and confident in the final stretch, Burgess gave us some insight into his thinking,“I was extremely nervous. I thought I don’t want to lose a state title here.” This race was the first time Burgess feels he had a good race at Hayward Field, which will be his home track in a few months. Burgess is hoping the "1500m will go out fast, and make the kickers work." He is really excited for the 1500m race.

Field Events:

4A Boys Long Jump
Dakotah Keys (Sweet Home so) was announced the long jump winner prior to his sixth jump. State championship in the bag, Dakotah relaxed enough to hit a personal best of 23-04.50 “My goal all year was to come hit a PR. It feels really good.” Keys will compete in both hurdle races and the javelin throw.

6A Boys Javelin Throw
Sam Crouser (Gresham so) threw 199-06 to claim his title as 6A javelin champion. Crouser admitted to trying out some new steps in attempts to get some more speed, he didn’t feel like the steps worked. He plans to compete in the various levels of the Junior Olympics.

5A Girls Discus
Kady Strafford (Crook County jr) was pretty excited after her 13 foot season best (123-00) earned her first place amongst some tough competitors. In fact, Kady was not just excited, she was surprised. “I did not expect this. I thought, maybe top five, not this.” The new goal for Kady is to return next year in multiple throws.
