4A Girls 800
Ashley Mayfield (Seaside jr) took off from the start, a clear lead at the 200m mark. Katie Waugh (Henley jr) and Allie Sibole (Marist so) led the pack that chased Mayfield. After completing the first lap (1:06.46), Maria Ramirez (La Pine jr) moved up on the outside. Ramirez and Waugh ran side by side until 300m to go when Mayfield made her move. With 200m left, it was Mayfield then Waugh. At the last 100m, the result looked the same. With approximately 70m left, Waugh took the lead. Teammate Kailee Poetsch (Henley so) took the cue to move soon after, awarding Henley a 1-2 finish. “I’ve been wanting this since last year at State,” Waugh said afterwards, “so it felt really good this year to get it. My plan was just to hang in there until the last 100 and kick it in, and that’s what happened.”

5A Girls 800
Alyssa O’Connor (Summit jr) laid back in around fourth place for the first 300m. She even seemed to be boxed in a bit. O’Connor found her opening on the homestretch leading into the bell lap. She found it, took it, and she never looked back as she ran away from the competition. O’Connor earned a state meet record with her 2:12.00, giving her the distinction of owning the fastest 800m time in Oregon this year. “I was not expecting a 2:12 today,” O’Connor said, “I was hoping for a 2:15.” After battling back from two major leg injuries, the state title was sweet vindication. “I worked hard with the physical therapist. We were doing a lot of strength training, and that’s really helped my form and my speed and endurance…the pain makes the victory sweeter.” Kayleigh Tyerman (Crater jr) took her second silver of this state meet by outkicking Erin Jamison (West Albany so).

6A Girls 800
By the 200m mark Alexandra Jones (St. Mary’s jr) took her position just a few strides in front of the pack, Lauren Lloyd (Hood River Valley so) on her heels. The first lap in 1:06.48, and the pack, although slightly strewn out, remained together. Coming out of the final turn, Lloyd’s kick brought her even with Jones, but Jones flipped another gear and managed to pull back into the lead. “It didn’t go how I planned it, I wanted to take it out fast, have a hard start, since [Lloyd] beat me at districts, and I really wanted to take it out on her.” Despite the altered plans, Jones still held on for the 2:14.78 to 2:15.02 victory.

4A Boys 800
La Salle’s Ryan Soberanis (sr) got a quick start, and led through 150m. By 200m, Robert Callagan (Sweet Home jr) and Cole Watson (Rogue River so) led together. Watson worked his way up as the sole leader going into the last lap. He continued to put distance between himself and the rest of the field. Watson the clear winner at 1:54.71, and Soberanis moving up from sixth place in the last 100m for second at 1:56.01.

5A Boys 800
Tommy Marshall (Liberty jr) set the early pace. At 300m, defending champ Alex Ringe (Hermiston sr) took control of the race. Ringe maintained his lead until the final stretch. Russell Drummond (Churchill sr) started to accelerate into the last 200, and only assumed the first place position for approximately the last 40m of the race. Drummond won in a time of 1:55.85. “It was exactly what I wanted to do,” he reflected afterwards. “I knew I had to be with the pack with 150 [meters] left, and then—I’m pretty confident in my speed at this point. If I was there, I could go for it and take my shot at the title.”

6A Boys 800
The stacked competition in this 800 promised a great race, and these athletes delivered. Nathan Mathabane (Lincoln jr) made his way to the front by 200m and led through 600m, followed by seven guys waiting for their moment. Elijah Greer (Lake Oswego jr) moved strongest with 250m to go, exploding to the fore. Mathabane, Taylor Morgan (Central Catholic sr), and Tim Kessler (Jesuit sr) all continued to roll into the finish. Greer wouldn’t be caught, as he ran a winning time of 1:50.60 for a new state meet record and #3 performance on the national list. “My race plan was to float near the front, but not at the front, and then with 250 to go I would take off, and that’s what I did. I was definitely tired coming in, it was hard, but I had the energy to go through with it, so it was a good race.”
