| Bianca Knight 22.97 USR !!! Ridgeland MS senior smashes the indoor 200 meter national record of 23.14 set by Allyson Felix in 2003. Knight roared out of the blocks and was picking up staggers 50 meters into the race. Coming down the home stretch she knew she had something special. Running second was 60m champion Jeneba Tarmoh CA, whose time of 23.65 put her eighth on the all time US high school list. Rich Gonzalez reports (below) that Bianca got the record despite bumps and easing up at the finish. "I thought a super-fast time was out the window, so I eased up just before the finish," Bianca told Rich. photo by John Dye | Simplot 2007: A Knight To Remember National record effort highlights great closing day of action Story By Rich Gonzalez, DyeStat/DyeStatCal -- Photos by John Dye POCATELLO, Id. -- Although the first two-and-a-half days of the 29th annual Simplot Indoor Games featured several notable highlights, the trademark meet-defining showcase moment seemed lacking. Then Bianca Knight settled into the blocks. Less than 23 seconds later, the Mississippi Missile nailed the target perfectly. Speed was unleashed. Cheers erupted. A national record was crushed. "We needed that!" gushed one excited infield official. "Now this place is jumpin'." Jumping, you say? Californians Ke'Nyia Richardson, Terry Prentice and Karyn Dunn executed those disciplines superbly, with each posting seasonal nation-leading marks in the horizontal jumps. Richardson improved upon her own U.S. #3 all-time mark in the triple jump (42-09.50) while Dunn (19-10.25) leapt to within 3/4 of an inch of the national indoor sophomore class record in the long jump; Prentice twice popped big efforts to now lay claim to 4 of the top 5 long jumps this year. While Prentice was the one to beat in the sand pits, another 'guy' ruled in the one-lap dash. Multi-sport wizard Trenton Guy Jr. of North Carolina once again put the hurt on the opposition, uncorking a yearly national-best in the 200 to win the final by more than a half a second (!) and stake claim to the three best clockings across the map this year Another North Carolinian, Kamorean Hayes dominated in the shot put ring, with her heave of 49-11.50 in the second of three attempts in the finals, besting runner-up Lauren Chambers of Georgia (tied for fifth in the nation this winter with a huge improvement to 45-03.50) by a stunning four and a half feet! More national leaders? Just swing back westward to the California athletes, where Cory Primm and Turquoise Thompson proved to be perfect 10s. Primm broke away from the field on the first lap to win the 800-meter run a seasonal-leading (on a non-oversized track) time that ranked second to national record-setter Michael Granville on the state's history annals and #10 all-time nationally. Thompson, the youth sprint phenom who once competed against pros in a meet as an 8th grader, achieved a nice lifetime best that moved her into third on the all-time state list and 10th on the all-time national record book. Relays too Was it electric-quick relays action you were thirsting for? Then all-star units and single-school quartets waged war in the exchange zones to fill the need. Both Spanish Fork of Utah's girls sprint medley and Newburgh Elite of New York's boys 4x400m relays established nation-leading marks despite losing their races. That's because Kryptonite Speed TC of Colorado (girls SMR) and Track Eastern of North Carolina (boys 4x400) apparently relied on multi-school contingents to win those races, thus not being eligible for inclusion on the scholastic lists. Tack on a surprisingly aggressive meet record performance in the boys mile and "The Games" truly kicked the intensity level up a few notches down the stretch, with an estimated 2,200 athletes from 18 states and Canada mixing up their talents in the highly popular indoor meet. "This was really an amazing event... so well organized and competitive," said California parent Sally Primm, making the trip with her son for the first time. "More meets should be like this." Here's a bit deeper look at a few of the moments/stories from the three-day meet: Mississippi's Bianca Knight So far, Bianca Knight’s plan is working to perfection. With plans to focus early this indoor season on the shorter dashes in anticipation of a record bid over 400 meters at the Nike Indoor Nationals next month, Knight was pleasantly surprised by her double showing at Simplot. First came a solid 7.29 clocking (just off her lifetime-best 7.26 of last year) in the 60-meter dash, where she took second to another international-class dash talent in California’s Jeneba Tarmoh (Mt. Pleasant HS, San Jose). Then came the big shocker… a stunning 22.97 national record sizzler over 200 meters, with that performance coming despite two problems along the backstretch and a premature easing off the pedal near the finish. "I collided with Ebony (Collins of California, who was in the adjacent lane) on the backstretch and also lost my footing back there, so I thought my race wasn't going as well as it could be," said Knight of her record effort in the one-lap sprint. With both miscues robbing her of precious momentum, Knight admittedly thought any super-fast time was surely compromised and came off the final turn a bit perturbed by the circumstances, even holding back in her final few strides. "I thought a super-fast time was out the window, so I eased up just before the finish." And eased right into the record books. Knight’s time was also second-fastest in the world this winter, trailing only American collegian and former Simplot Games standout Shalonda Solomon’s 22.85. “The time in the 60 was very promising, better than I expected… it shows my raw speed is sharp,” chimed Knight. “But the 200 time – given the bumping that happened and my backing off a bit at the finish, that was really encouraging. The 400 will be my focus at nationals.” Trenton Guy Jr. is still a new name and a new face to many who follow the national scene, but that should be changing by this meet. Guy, a senior from West Charlotte HS in North Carolina, just missed his lifetime-best in the indoor 60m and recorded a personal best in the 200m to emerge as the meet’s only double individual winner on the boys’ side. Guy clocked 6.78 to win by two-tenths over Terrence McGaughy and clocked 21.52 to captute the longer race. Guy now has the three fastest indoor deuce times of the year. “I felt I was ready to get the meet record (21.47 by J-Mee Samuels 2 years ago), so I'm a bit mad about not getting that,” said Guy, who had a competitor in the adjacent lane errantly wander into his, causing the slightest of hesitation by Guy. “It did happen, but I can’t let anything affect me.” Guy came out for track last year and enjoyed a superb debut season, clocking seasonal bests of 6.76 and 21.94, but a groin injury hobbled him during the outdoor season, where ne never emerged as a national factor. Prior to that, Guy was an exceptional wrestler and soccer player as well. He’s decided to focus solely on the dashes this year, however, and is emerging as the one to beat thus far. - “Greyhounds Capture Men’s 800/1600”
Cory Primm relished the chance to race against a solid 800-meter field here, but most leading entrants did not show this weekend for varying reasons. No worries. Primm found an even more challenging opponent: the stopwatch. In repeating what has often been his approach in his specialty event, the Westlake HS (CA) senior pressed the pace early (53.4 split for 400m) to put the competition away. Although he closed in 58.5, the outcome was no longer in question as the UCLA-bound talent had already dragged the rest of the field into oxygen debt. Primm’s time ranks # 2 in California history indoors (and #10 all-time in the U.S.), trailing only prep recordholder Michael Granville. All this despite Primm making his indoors debut this weekend. He chose to race indoors in large part to gauge his excellent off-season fitness after spending a good part of the wintertime in a structured bi-weekly track training class that reportedly netted his outstanding returns. While Primm impressed onlookers during his on-track exploits over the weekend, others were quick to comment about his off-the-track demeanor as well, noting his impressive selfless qualities. What is not known by most is that UCLA’s outstanding current distance recruiting class evolved in part due to Primm’s generosity. The Bruins, thinking they were out of the running in the recruiting for another top athlete, reportedly offered Primm a nice scholarship package. Once it was learned this other notable recruit was still available but UCLA’s funding was now limited, Primm reportedly notified UCLA’s coaching staff that he’d take a cut in his own scholarship offer if the difference could be utilized to sign this pending recruit. In the end, that flexibility provided the impetus for another key signing for the Bruins! The big distance shocker came in the 1600-meter run, where Utah’s Luke Puskedra (Judge Memorial HS) set a personal best in the 800m en route to his winning 4:13.62 clocking – a lifetime best of nearly 10 seconds despite coming indoors and at 4,400 feet altitude. Puskedra, who had a bit of an inconsistent cross-country season, entered the weekend with a lifetime best of 2:04 for 800 meters, but ran 2:01 during a leg on the team’s 4x800m earlier in the day, then ran a 2:03-2:10 split in the 1600m final, where he took command early to gap the field and was never seriously challenged. “I surprised myself with the time,” said Puskedra. “This was way beyond what I was expecting.” We’re still researching this, but Puskedra’s time has to rank among the top handful indoors in prep history (if not best ever) at altitude. Luke's showing capped a great 1600m sweep for Judge Memorial athletes as Samantha McMillan won the girls race in a superb 4:56.32, a nice lifetime-best indoors! The girls’ sprint medley relay was sizing up as a dandy, largely due to Spanish Fork’s Nachelle Stewart and Kryptonite Speed Team’s Leigh Ann Ganzar inevitably squaring off on the 800m anchor leg. Stewart, whose standing in the sport is rooted more in the 400m (54.36 outdoors last year), gave her newfound rival a great run for her money as the tandem traded the lead in the latter half of the anchor leg challenge. But Ganzar rallied and was just barely able to hold off Stewart as they split 2:09.3 and 2:10.2, respectively. Ganzar not only won the battle, but her team won the war as KST edged Spanish Fork, 4:01.21 to 4:01.52. Imagine a powerful and gargantuan-sized lineman telling the school's football coach that he's hanging up the cleats for his senior year. That's exactly what Palm Desert High of California's Joe Canavan did a few months ago. Inspired by his own excellent shot putting improvement in the final weeks of his junior year, Canavan re-prioritized his endeavors and decided to hit the weight room more and commit his competition focus solely toward track and field. "I've just been hitting the weights and working on throwing said the 'new and improved' Canavan before the start of Saturday's shot put competition. Canavan then notched the first major victory of his indoor career with an upset win over previous national leader Colin Boevers (pronounced “Beavers”) of Utah’s Judge Memorial HS. Canavan’s best of 62-05 in the fifth round overtook Wes Wright and Boevers and stood up for the win for the ex-lineman. - "Doing It The Wright Way"
When he was not clenching his fists, grimacing hard while flexing or letting out yells, Wes Wright was busy hurling implements quite a ways. Wright, the Villa Rica HS senior and male headliner from an accomplished and large group of weight athletes comprising Georgia's "Throw 1 Deep" crew, had to settle for a split after winning Thursday's weight throw (76-06.75) by more than 10 feet, but then taking second (61-01.00) in Saturday's shot put final. Wright was quite animated in the 40 minutes before the weight throw competition, undertaking an extensive dynamic warm-up routine on the infield that left several onlookers aghast, wondering if perhaps he was expending too much energy. It's hard to argue against Wright or his teammates this weekend. Throw 1 Deep swept the top five spots in the women's weight throw (led by sophomore Lauren Chambers) and did one better by sweeping all six medal positions on the men’s side. The shot put competition seemed not quite as rewarding for Wright as, according to various reports, he was visibly upset after several of his throws failed to yield the result he was searching for. Throw 1 Deep sophomore Lauren Chambers had a big weekend, however, winning the 20-pound weight with a heave of 51-06 (matched by freshman teammate Patrice Gates, but with Chambers having the better second-best effort to win the tiebreaker) and improved by nearly three feet in the shot put to place second to North Carolina star Kamorean Hayes there (49-11.50 to 45-03.50). Throw 1 Deep females claimed 3 of the top 6 spots in the shot put competition. “It really helps me that we’re so strong, both at practice and in meets,” explained Chambers. “I didn’t feel my best (in the weight throw) and told Patrice and Allison (Horner, third in 51-01) that they had to come through for us. When they started throwing well, it got me going too.” The Throw 1 Deep contingent, a staple among throws participants at Simplot in recent years, are coached by Mike Judge. - "To Be Settled In Maryland"
Johnny Dutch (center) edged Terry Prentice (right) by 0.02 seconds to win the 60m H final Perhaps the two most electrifying male prep track and field athletes on the national stage are North Carolina's Johnny Dutch and California's Terry Prentice. Both court the extreme athleticism and technical prowess to be featured in either highlight films or clinic demonstrations. Simplot Games 2007 was supposed to serve as the grand stage to determine who was better. Instead, Dutch was victimized by a rare poor start to post a time 0.01 seconds slower than Prentice in Friday’s 60-meter hurdles qualifying, yet came back to beat him by 0.02 in Saturday’s final, 7.83 to 7.85.Two big tests resulting in not much daylight existing to separate the two. Both seemed primed for the final, although Prentice had also competed in the long jump competition (twice spanning a national best 24-03.00 to win) earlier in the day and came back late in the meet to run on the SoCal Cheetahs' 4x200 meter relay. Dutch gets the slight nod for now on the basis of the head-to-head win. But as far as the indoor season is concerned, the decider will come in the second weekend of March as both will compete at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Landover. Dutch is expected to compete in the hurdles and perhaps an open sprint event while Prentice indicated he'll likely do the pentathlon, the hurdles race and perhaps the long jump! As for the Simplot Games, that's a wrap for 2007. Hope to see you all here next year! |
