BOYS

1. Crater OR—
After strong efforts at Bob Firman and Stanford, and with a big Oregon showdown at the adidas Classic looming this weekend, the Comets ran only two varsity runners at the Puma Classic in Bend, OR on 10/6, finishing 11th, with top-4 runner Josh Elliott placing 8th.

2. North Central WA—
4. Mead WA—
5. Central Valley WA—

At a Richland Invitational that more closely resembled a Greater Spokane League Wednesday dual meet, the three ranked Spokane schools confirmed the wisdom of their current placing by finishing 1-2-3, in ranking order. North Central, winners with 63 points, continued to be buoyed by the frontrunning of Andrew Kimpel and Leon Dean, as well as the proximity of their next three. Their top five averaged 15:40.2 on the 3 mi layout, with a compression of 41 seconds. Mead, which seems to improve weekly, wasn’t far behind, averaging 15:49.6 behind runner-up Kelly Lynch’s 15:11. Central Valley, 15 points in arrears of Mead, packed 4 runners between 10th and 20th separated by only 20 seconds, but went back to the 40th scorer for their 5th man, a lapse which hurt them in such a competitive field.

3. Central Catholic OR—
Still resting their #1 runner--slightly-injured Taylor Morgan--in anticipation of a return at the adidas Classic this coming weekend, the Rams nonetheless managed a mere 49 points in winning the 22-team Brooks Harrier Classic on 10/6. They were led by runner-up soph Musa Ahmed (15:54.3) and junior Samot Turina (3rd 16:07.3), last year's #2 rounding back into shape after an intentionally conservative start to the season.

6. Jesuit OR—
The Crusaders contested a small tri-meet against Metro league rivals Aloha and Sunset on 10/3. For the second meet in a row, previous #1 Brian Manning was fronted by prior #2 Peter Maag, but this was a meet where the entire Jesuit lineup proved somewhat interchangeable, as the deep squad placed 8 runners in the top 10 of the race and ran their #3 through #9 men within 1-second of each other. They’ll be gearing up, along with the other Oregon powers, for the adidas Classic this coming Saturday.

3. Bozeman MT—
The Hawks scored an astonishing seven (7!) points in a 43-team field at the Capital City 7-on-7 flighted meet on 10/4. With progressive flights pitting each team’s top 7 runners against one another in separate races, the girls of Bozeman got off to a great start with #7 Faith Steinbacher’s 19:49 flight winner. From there, everyone held up her end of the bargain, all the way up through #1 frosh phenom Heidi Turner, gunning a 17:41 winner more than 20 seconds clear of the top AA state returner, Keely West. Seven points in seven races against the best teams in Montana...the Hawks are certainly for real.

The Panthers clawed their way into the top ten regionally on the strength of their showing at Sunfair, where they upset a shorthanded Gig Harbor squad. At the Richland Invitational they ran up against other tough in-state competition and ended up fourth in close scoring to three unranked but well-regarded teams. Mead was led up front by the 18:26 4th place finish of Baylee Mires, with Sara Stenersen a solid second in 13th. The split from 3-5 was only 12-seconds, and Mead’s five was in before all save Lake Stevens, but they couldn’t overcome the front end running of the top three teams.
