Summary of Northwest Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 29, 2007

By Dave Devine, Dyestat NW Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

BOYS

1. Crater OR—
3. Jesuit OR—
5. Central Catholic OR—

A trio of ranked Oregon teams traveled down to California for the Stanford Invitational. Crater, coming off their big win at Bob Firman, managed to pull off the victory here as well, despite having their #1 from Firman, Ryan Santana, run as their #3 at Stanford. The Elliot brothers stepped up, and a 28-second 1-5 split narrowly kept a Rancho Buena Vista CA team at bay, 167-168. Central Catholic, running without their normal #1, Taylor Morgan (nursing an abdominal strain), still managed to topple NW#3 and city rival Jesuit with their 6th place finish behind impressive soph Musa Ahmed. The Rams exhibited tight pack running, putting their scoring five only 16 seconds apart! Jesuit, apparently suffering a rare off-day from usual #1 Brian Manning (and a step-up performance from Peter Maag), saw their typically close compression swell to over a minute and ended up 9th in the team battle. Full race report is available on DyeStatCal.com.

7. Central Valley WA—
8. Gig Harbor WA—

The two teams locked at 7 and 8 in the rankings raced the flighted Sunfair Invite on 9/29 and landed in the same order when scores were tabulated across the 7 Varsity races, with Central Valley edging out Gig Harbor, 14-17. Sunfair is run in flights divided by the top seven runners, so projected #1's race the #1's from other teams, #2-men race other #2's etc. Central Valley’s harriers won 4 of the 7 flights, leaving Gig Harbor’s runners to take the 3 CV didn’t. Most impressive was Gig Harbor’s top gun Miles Unterreiner’s Flight 7 victory, a 15:13 winner that was well-clear of the competition.

GIRLS

1. Jesuit OR—
The Jesuit girls headed south to prove themselves against a strong out-of-state field, and showed their NW#1-US#16 ranking is well-deserved. Against a slew of California teams, as well as SO#5 The Woodlands, the Crusaders took first in the Stanford Invite with 108 points. They averaged 18:54 behind top runner Noelle VanRysselberghe’s 18:20, and had all five scorers within a 1:05 compression. They had the fastest 6th and 7th runners in the field as well, and left a ‘B team’ behind in Portland which took the Division 1 race at Nike Pre-Nationals. 7. Boise ID—

Boise, which suffered a disappointment at the Bob Firman Invite a week ago and saw their ranking tumble, bounced back at the Nike Pre-Nationals meet in Portland, defeating the two NW teams ranked ahead of them, as well as a surprising Newport WA team that they edged (191-191) on the strength of their 6th runner. The teams ahead of Boise were from outside the region: winner Cardondelet and runner-up Esperanza of California, and third placers Cherry Creek CO. Sarah Olson (18:35) led the way for Boise with her excellent 4th place showing. Snohomish was only a point behind at 192, fronted by the strong run of Ellie Bonner in 7th place (18:42). Eastlake WA (203 pts) was 7th overall, fourth among Northwest teams. Full results and meet story are on DyeStat.

The girls of Bozeman continued their in-state unbeaten tear, taking the small Butte Invitational with a mere 23 points (1-4-5-6-7) behind the stellar front-running of frosh Heidi Turner (18:28.47). The rest of the Hawks weren’t far behind, pushing their top five within 59-seconds of Turner’s win.

8. Gig Harbor WA—
The Gig Harbor girls collaborated with their boys’ team to win the Sunfair combined team title, but separately each was edged out by a Spokane squad. For the lady Tides, it was unranked Mead who knocked them off (14-19) in compiled scoring from 7 individual flights. Gig Harbor was competing without usual top-five runner Anna Kalbrener, and managed a first place finisher in flight #6 (Kate Stuart), but it wasn’t enough to turn back the game efforts of the Mead girls, who took first in three separate flights.

9. Squalicum WA—
Despite placing four in the top 20 of the Mount Baker Invite, a feat no other team accomplished, the Squalicum girls found themselves a distant 4th behind team winners Central Valley WA. Senior Bronwyn Crossman took second overall, but they were without Crossman’s sister Gylany, their usual #3, out with an illness. It meant the Storm went back to 90th place for their 5th runner, a gap that left them susceptible to upset by three other unranked teams.

10. West Anchorage AK—
Up against a pair of formidable teams from Juneau-Douglas and West Valley, the girls of West Anchorage backed up their season-long status as the premier girls’ team in Alaska with an impressive 45 points at the Alaska 4A state championship. Returning to the site of their early season Palmer Invitational triumph, the Eagles managed 5 in the top 14, with a sterling 27-second compression from 1 to 5. This was the first state title in cross country for West Anchorage (boys or girls) in more than 40 years.
